OldNick Posted 24 March, 2011 Share Posted 24 March, 2011 My father used to tell me about his hero Charlie Wayman who was our top player in the 50's? We were heading for promotion and were well clear only for Wayman to get injured. i think we didnt win another game and missed out on promotion. I only hope the clubs reticence to strengthen the squad does not come back and haunt us. Of course we may sign a couple today but I believe our arrogance that we will make second will do us harm

derry Posted 24 March, 2011 Share Posted 24 March, 2011 Charlie Wayman was Saints best player and top scorer. I think it was 9 points clear but we just couldn't score, if I remember correctly even Alf Ramsey was tried at centre forward in desperation. It didn't work and we couldn't score enough goals. Football is a funny old game, one minute you are flying the next minute you can't buy a goal. I won't be happy until it is all done and dusted provided we are promoted. red&white56 Posted 24 March, 2011 Share Posted 24 March, 2011 (edited) Haven't we already faced this issue with Rickie having a lean patch earlier this season? Also remember the Oldham game - we scored 6 goals, with six different palyers. I don't think we're dependent on one player, but obviously as the team changes through injuries it upsets the rhythm. derry Posted 24 March, 2011 Share Posted 24 March, 2011 it is just me, i want to have all the odds stacked in our favour. So do I Nick, we should have signed Brian Howard last week while we had the chance. He proved on Saturday that Reading would be silly to let him go in their present circumstances. The idiots on here who rubbished him didn't know what they were talking about as usual. He is a good player and would have improved us no end. I think we hacked him off with the way we enquired then did nothing. I think we didn't realise that he was a supporter and wanted to come and by doing nothing made him feel after his original enthusiasm he had just been used. I have been banging on about getting a couple of players in to strengthen the side in both the forward and midfield areas. We dont know the extent of AL or Ox's injuries but with the side lacking something extra in CM and add to the chance of losing one of our starlets it is essential to get a player/players in by deadline day. We have no other chance ofter then

I truly believe if ML was alive he would have spent in Jan to make sure his 5 year plan was still on track. I know we are in the minority but that does not mean we are wrong. If we fail this season ,all those who are complacent will moan when all the best players leave

We have no other chance ofter then I'd agree with midfield - we need someone to work alongside DH. With Morgan out, Chappers struggling I don't think we have a lot options to change games from the bench - with AL and AOC injured our options are even more restricted. Dellman Posted 24 March, 2011 Share Posted 24 March, 2011 Yes, Charlie Wayman was injured scoring the winning goal against Spurs at White Hart Lane and as they were our chief rivals we thought that was it, we were up, but it was the opposite. Yes, Alf Ramsey (who once scored four for Saints) was tried as centre forward and also Bobby Veck the left back! But there is one big difference, in those days there was a team of eleven and no subs allowed, now with a squad injured people can come off instead of staying on and damaging themselves further and the subs are good cover. We made our signings for cover in January, why the panic for more cover? In NA we trust!

Of course we may sign a couple today but I believe our arrogance that we will make second will do us harm I was a tiny kid and it was my first memories of Saints and will never forget the abject disappointment in the town. We'd never been in Divison 1 in our history and we missed out two or three years in succession and the widely held belief amongst fans was that the board didn't want promotion as we couldn't afford to go up. beginning to sound very familiar again? I remember my Dad grumbling about this endlessly - like father, like son! Luckily he lived long enough not only to see them get into League 1 once but twice. You are quite right of course that we seem to be in an alarmingly similar situation all over again now. We have to stop kidding ourselves, even with Lalla and Chambo around we keep misfiring more often than we get it together and indeed it is becoming more rare for us to get our full act together and fire on all cylinders even with Morgan on the field. That is why ultimately I have lost confidence in Adkins, with far less talent Gus Poyet is doing an effing brilliant job so what's Adkins excuse? For sure, he'll now blame absences for any failure but for ****s sake he's had all year to recognise and address our obvious deficiencies and lack of cover and of course he's supposed to be Mr Effing Motivator. Trouble is he too often talks absolute ******** as many fans now realise and if you don't agree explain to the rest of us his game plan of "controlling the controllables" that so successfully closed the gap on Brighton from 10 points to 12 - this from the guru who is certain we will "win this league"? So we have no cover, we have no Plan B or C and as far as one can tell our last resort has become endless long ball hoofball up to their back four and when the need comes for passing all we can do is pass it back to Davies in the hope that he can come up with yet another variation on the delayed long put into oblivion. I think you'll find that since Adkins has been here we've amassed a similar amount of points as Brighton. If Brighton had 4 points from 6 games when Poyet arrived, then yeah it would be comparable. The rest of your post is also complete crap btw, as always. You really do have no idea whatsoever. We have plenty of cover, as it happens, and it's being used to the limit right now with key injuries. If we had no cover, we'd be having to play kids on the bench. It's all very academic though as we will no doubt finish in second place anyway. A valid point, however, I'm impressed at how closely we have matched Brighton under Adkins, given that Brighton have the luxury of SUCH a big gap they are going to be playing under almost no pressure and results will affect that. Because we've given ourselves such a mountain to climb with our shocking start to the season I think we're going to be playing under more pressure and all things considered we're doing admirably. I think we'll go up in 2nd and all this handwringing and 'woe is me' from some on here will be proved to have been nothing but a lot of hot air and wasted energy. sammysaint Posted 24 March, 2011 Share Posted 24 March, 2011 Must say i agree with some of the comments about adkins but most are wrong. 1. No plan b or c i agree with, i believe nigels game plan when it works means were beat any team in this league and most in the championship, ( look at man u game and are recent run of results). 2. No cover, i disagree we signed DNG and Forte who can play on the wings and upfront and on there day are good players. ( just some fans wont give them credit but quick to diss them) 3.Talking Crap, yea sometimes he does and i wonder what hes on about but in alan pards we had a very honest manager who said how it was,(which i liked) nigel trys to keep some things private. Jez Posted 24 March, 2011 Share Posted 24 March, 2011 I'm sure someone with more time that me can dig them out but I am sure Adkins or Cortese (or both) said that we were looking and/or had made bids on multiple players in the Jan transfer window, but these were basically scuppered by the press speculation about AOC leaving and going to Arsenal/Man Utd/Barcelona (delete as applicable). This pushed up other prices, and made it impossible to Saints to sign someone without the price being ridiuclous. And I am sure we are 100% in agreement that we don't want Saints to suddenly start throwing huge (league 1 comparable) sums of money around for players that may or may not make a difference. Well, I am sure there are some people who would be quite happy for us to operate like P*mpey. Especially if they are players that are not even gonna be in our starting eleven, and are only "vital" cover that if we don't have, we'll lose every game for the rest of the season and not make the playoffs. Our form is still one of the best in the league, and we are on course to get 2nd currently. Injuries to our best players cannot be covered, the same as injuries to Rooney/Van Persie/Lampard also cannot be covered, as they are some of the best players for their teams, and teams generally suffer without their best players. I really cannot see the argument that Saints decided not to sign any additional players out of "arrogance" - that idea is just preposterous (an underused word imo)

Derry - you need to dust off ITN if you have it. The season being referred to was 1948-49. Ramsey had gone to Spurs by then. With 7 games left we were top with 51 points and Fulham second with 43 and WBA third with the same nos of points. Remember only 2 points for a win. We had just gone to White Hart Lane and in front of 69265 fans won 1-0 with Charlie Wayman, injured and a passenger on the wing (no subs then of course) hobbling in to get to the ball first and score. His ecstatic colleagues carried him back into his own half as my Dad told me who was there. We were up, no doubt about it but with Charlie injured we only picked up 4 points in the remainding games and were overhauled by both Fulham and West Brom. LGTL Posted 24 March, 2011 Share Posted 24 March, 2011 Adkins record since he got here is broadly similar to Poyet's in that time frame. To be ahead of Poyet in Brighton's position, Adkins would have had to amass a swing of 20 points, a tall order when Brighton are obviously one of the best teams in the league. You are, as I say after all of your posts, a senile old fool.
redkeith Posted 24 March, 2011 Share Posted 24 March, 2011 On a more positive note in Saints' History , it was about this time of the 77-78 season that Tony Sealy got injured, opening up a place in the team for Tony Funnell. Funnell went on to score 7 goals in the run in, including the equaliser at Orient which sealed promotion ( barring a 5 0 defeat in the last game). If AOC or AL is out for a while, maybe there is another Funnell waiting in the wings ?

We had been 8 points ahead since about Christmas. If I remember correctly, we played West Ham, West Brom and Newcastle in a busy end to the season and failed to get the points needed. My Dad took me to the Dell and he too was convinced the Directors did not relish the costs of playing in the old Division One. It was strange that in those days an injured player was left to hobble along the wing; sort of out of harm's way, but to be a nuisance to the opponents.
