Last Nights Ref

We love having a good moan at referees, but I thought, for a change, that last nights ref had a decent game. Didn`t blow up for every lttle thing, let the game flow and kept control very well. If I can come away from a game without remembering having ago at the ref once, then he must have done something right!

Yes I agree he seemed to have a good game he let the game flow but there were not many contenious issues and only 20 fouls

He was pretty lenient tbh. A couple of hard tackles in midfield went ignored, most refs would have blown for fouls. I didnt understand the "advantage" he played in the 1st half, what advantage was there for us in that position? Good reffing overall tho.

Thought he was good. The assistants were poor though. One flagging ten seconds late on Lambert and another flagging BWP offside when one of our players passed the ball.

A chant of "Bradley Wright Phillips, he's always offside" sprung out from the Northam which brought a smile to BWP if I saw correctly.

Spot on with both of those. But that linesman on the left first half also got a similar decision wrong in their favour, so it evened out, although the conclusion was that he was twice as crap to get it wrong again.

The referee was one of the best I've seen this season. He stamped his authority on the match early, by awarding us a free kick for a push on Lambert. Good refereeing IMO for him to put down an early marker to show that he won't put up with any nonsense.

I was thinking as I logged on about starting a thread to the same effect. Admittedly it was a fairly easy game to ref, but he kept it flowing whenever he could and every decision, even against us, appeared correct. You can't ask for much more than that. Well done Mr A Bates.

The one thing that mystifies me though, is why defenders seem to be able to get away with holding Rickie Lambert as often as they do. Every match, defenders impede him by jumping with their arms around his neck, invariably right in front of the ref and he gets nothing. At the Swindon game, I sat next to someone who doesn`t go to many games and he commented on how many times that our defenders were pulled up for this. I told him to watch how many times the same thing was done to Lambert but went unpunished. He ended up laughing at the obvious unbalanced approach from the ref. I only remember Lambert getting one free-kick last night, despite the desperate attempts to prevent him getting to the ball, although there may have been more.

coz lambert never looks like he wants to jump or battle for the ball- makes it easy for the ref whatever the merits of the case are. He should go down more. Agree with the OP- the ref had a decent game, though the lino running the itchen touchline was utter ****e.

Agree with this but RL is also very clever and if you watch closely there are a lot of headers that he doesn't actually challenge for off the ground, just plans himself under the path of the ball meaning the defender has to go over him to win the ball invariably putting his arms on RL shoulders.

How's it clever? He doesn't win the header and doesn't get the foul. The sooner people realise he's a big-boned scouser and converted attacking midfielder and NOT a target man, the better. He actually looked very comfortable when DC came on and he played in a deeper position.

I particularly liked it when the Ref' told the players to 'play on' when one of the Charlton defenders was rolling around with 'both legs broken' obviously time-wasting but when play was NOT held up, suddenly leapt up and began running like a two-year old. Well spotted Ref', unfortunately can't say the same about either linesmen. (Nearly said 'ASSISTANT referees' there, a right pair of pillocks)

I thought he did well but had to laugh in the second half where one of our players blatantly used his hand on the ball in front of the ref and he didn't give it.. Think it may have been lambert and from where I was standing it was blatant :p

Do agree about opposition sides being allowed to climb all over lambert. There were a few times last night where the ball was thrown towards him and he had two players hanging off his shoulders like two lion cubs hanging off a wilderbeast :D

Wasn't a foul but also thought it was funny when Jaidi crashed down on one of the charlton players on the touchline in front of us. He proper squashed him and left him buckled on the floor lol

i think that the MKdons fans would point the finger at how we got away with Fonte holding their player in the penalty area, how Fletcher was held by Fonte at SMS. if the refs are consistant then fine. it would be annoying if it was only one way,but we get the rub as well.

Rofe was commentating (very well again) on Solent last night, and seemed to know of the ref. He said that he'd been reffing in the lower Leagues for over 10 years and was a good solid ref, albeit not having ever reffed in the Prem.

Top bloke, Rofe. He commentates so much more sensibly than Uncle Dave, made some good insightful comments, thankfully not along the lines of "Well, what Southampton don't want to do is concede a goal here!"

We should have a poll on Rofe v Merrington then show it to Solent. I only hear him before/after or on away games but 'Uncle' Dave winds me up something rotten. Rofey is excellent, as was David Armstrong. It's time they pensioned the silly old s0d off.
