Gobern - those at the match...

Thought he had a good, no nonsense game - asked to close people down and win the second balls. He was strong, mobile and disciplined - thought he might dive in but he didn't and was key to winning the midfield. Saw very little of him going forward and kept his passing very simple - and I've always remembered him as a more attacking midfielder, so it would have been nice to see more on that side.

Really? What did he do at the match that was so good? Listening on the radio his name was hardly mentioned. Was he MotM, do you think?

Heard him mentioned plenty on the radio, usually when he made a poor pass, or was caught in possession. Meerington especially was highly critical of Gobern in particular and the MF in general (except Chaplow). But then Merrington is critical of almost anything these days, it is so depressing listening to his drivel (what Saints don't need now is to conced another goal, no **** Sherlock, thought your comments were supposed to be insightful not stating the bleeding obvious, and if the tosser says "for the listeners at home" again, who the **** else are your comments supposed to be for, eh?). So given this, I guess Oscar probably played brilliantly.

He's always been a talented player, just unfairly tainted with relegation and the Wotte era etc. With some decent coaching behind him he'll be decent - he's got some terrific qualities.

MK Don's fans raved about him when he went there for a couple of games...

He did ok. His closing down and tackling was important to break up their passing game in midfield. To me it seems that he's responded positively to the Adkins way of playing. He does give the ball away occasionally but no more than Hammond or Chaplow.

For some reason my mate was convinced Gobern was going to score a 30 yarder yesterday and kept banging on about it during the game. He was quite drunk.

As has been said, he has a solid game. Tidied up well in more of a defensive role than you might expect from him. Was surprised to see him chosen over stephens but thought he warranted his place on his performance. He played the sort of role whereby when you seem to be fairly quiet, you are actually being very effective in picking up the scraps, closing down men and space, and giving it simple. Couple of nice touched too - one i remember in particular was in the second half was a flicked pass to Lallana down the line when it looked impossible. Was just about close enough to our end to see it!

listening to a radio commentary..? you're lucky you heard anything about the match at all.

Commentators seem obsessed with talking about ; other people's opinions. asking questions of "experts" who couldn't tell you the way to the local pub, dragging up old stories and wasting vasts amounts of time waffling about what "should have happened"

and why we DIDN'T score !

Doesn't surprise me you didn't hear names, sometimes they don't even give out the team line-ups, or mentions on-coming subs.

with the relentless on-going prattle about attacking midfielders (type AOC /Lallana /Schneiderlin) some people have lost sight of the fact that sometimes we need a few more " ball-winners" in midfield, and at various time in the past have suffered MF's

who can win the ball without committing a foul. (If you gonna do anything " fancy " with the ball - first you have to get it ).

I long for the advent of another Jimmy Gabriel, Hugh Fisher, Nick Holmes, or Jimmy Case.

Yeah, thanks for that. Very insightful...

I would wager that half the people on here don't bother reading posts of more than one sentence let alone those that go on and on and on and on.

And coming from someone who can't stick to the rules of the word association thread I think that's a bit rich, but to satisfy you I will add 'stoic'
