Jeff Le Taxi Posted 4 May, 2011 Share Posted 4 May, 2011 Where do you think we'll be league wise? and what would you describe as a successful season, personally i think we will have a good season with the players we have and maybe one or two additions,.............. no-one id particularly like us to get rid of............ onwards and upwards! CLOTH EARS Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 In my opinion we need to strengthen the midfield area, we have players in that area that are to inconsistent eg Hammond, Scniederlin BOTH are decent players on a good day but they need to have more 'good days'. Chaplow even went off the boil for a while but picked up again in the last few games. If we are to mount another promotion challenge then this is a key area for me. Obviously if we lose Chamberlain then we need to buy another wide player and perhaps another centre half too as Jaidi is obviously no spring chicken. IF we rectify these areas then the play offs are a definate possibility.
Dan Johnson Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 I think we should be looking towards the play offs, if we finish the season just outside them then I'd count that as a good season. I'm really not too fussed about where we finish next season though, I'd say we need at least 2 seasons in the champ to prepare if we're really aiming for the prem
saintscottofthenortham Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 I think after looking at what Norwich have done this year that the playoffs is a real possibility. I think get a decent centre mid in because DH just aint gonna cut it for me and a decent young centre half to partner Fonte and were good to go IMHO. forever a red and white Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 Expectation is undoublty going through the roof. But I honestly would be happy with a bottom half finish, no risk of relegation and build a team for a promotion push the following year. We must remain patient, it would be unfair, unless we have suitable and/or substantial investment, to expect another promotion becuase the pressure on Adkins would be enormous. Although my previous statement sounds ambitious, I would also be genuinely happy with this ^ I actually think there is considerably less pressure on NA next season. It will be the 2nd season in the NPC that the pressure will really be on.
Tokyo-Saint Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 I agree that we shouldn't expect promotion but we don't want to loose that winning mentality either. I think we should, at the very least, be looking to match Millwall's performance this season.
doddisalegend Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 Top half finish = happy playoffs = outstanding auto promotion = un****ingbelivable TBH without knowing our summer transfer activity it's a hard one to answer, but I think the current team are at least a mid-table championship team. Maybe we could just win the carling cup next season and finish just outside the play offs followed by auto promtion the season after.

mikee Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 I'd love to see us go for it and try to emulate Norwich but i think that we will need 5-6 good new players to achieve that. Without significant investment I think play-offs is the best we could achieve. Of our current squad, the players who I feel can make the step up are: Davis Fonte Harding / Dickson Schneiderlin / Chaplow Lallana / Chamberlain Guly / lambert / Barnard In my view we need serious strengthening at RB, CB, CM, and good additional cover at wide midfield and strikers. With that we could well achieve back to back promotions.

bender Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 I dont think it will take many additions to make it to the top 6. Depends on whether AOX stays. As we stand now, I'ld say we were at least a mid to lower mid table team.
sussexsaint Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 This all depends entirely on our activity over the summer. Spend wisely and mid table consolidation with a push for playoffs is not unreasonable. Avoiding relegation again must surely be the priority. I know everyone is desperate to get into the perm but when we get there I want to be there with the tools to stay there for a very long time

Saint Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 Saints have exceeded my expectations for the past two seasons. Last season, with the -10, I said I would have been happy if we scraped survival and didn't go down again. In reality we finished only a few points outside the playoffs with a JPT win and a good FA Cup run. This season I was a bit pessimistic after a poor pre season and the pressure of the favourites tag. This wasn't helped by a poor start to the season and the sacking of AP. At this point I would have been more than happy with playoffs. In reality we went on one hell of a run and finished a close second (in the end). So, in the NPC I'm pretty much expecting mid table in the first season. So hopefully that means playoffs! saints-cris Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 If anyone thinks we'll settle for mid-table is mad. I bet that isnt Cortese's ambition. I reckon hes setting his sights as high as anyone on here.
NickG Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 Why can't we do what Norwich have done? no reason at all. Shouldn't expect it, but looking at the teams, with our young players, good manager, support, hopefully bit of financial backing (although Norwich didn't sign the big names requested at top of this forum) there is no reason why we can't aim for automatic promotion

Turkish Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 I honestly think we are only 2 or 3 signings away from challenging for the play offs. West End Saint Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 Fancy us to do well & make the playoffs we have a good squad already I think Adkins will have some money to spend if he makes some good signings we will have a great chance. notnowcato Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 Play offs. A lot will depend on who drops out of the Prem. If Wolves drop and Big Mick stays they will occupy one of the top 2 spots. The other 3 likely candidates are less easier to predict, probably West Ham fairing best. I think the 3 coming up from Div 1 (assuming Huddersfield do the necessary) will be the strongest to have gone into the Championship for some time. All in all, a very competitive league ahead of us. Assuming no major off season dramas, we start next season on a massive roll. Get off to a positive start and the play offs could easily be in our grasp. dune Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 We're going to have to start playing football more next season. I know we've finnished 2nd, but to me it doesn't feel like we have deserved to. That said it's horses for courses and I do think NA has tuned us to do the job this season. Next season we're gonna have to improve and speed up our passing game with more one touch football. I think this is achieveable with the squad we've got and 4 or 5 additions.

When NA first arrived he tried to play more passing football rather than hoofing it to Lambert but quickly realised we didn't have the players and adapted - which is something i particularly like about Adkins. Only recently we have started to see a more fluid game from the front 4 players with lots of inter changing positions but we need better ball players in midfield and defence to get the whole team playing this way. I am excited by what adkins might do with some money and a full pre-season.

We've got 89 points which would have been enough to finish 2nd every season for the last 10 years, win saturday and 92 points would be the highest points total for second in the last 10. Given out shocking start that is a good effort. We have played some decent football as well, admittedly not been brilliant every week but who is? I just don't think we've been a good footballing side and when you see a lot of boring games where you're not entertained properly it doesn't feel like you've been watching a 2nd in the table side. In the championship there are some good teams and the way we play isn't up that level and imo we won't get the results like we have in L1 unless we step up a level in our passing game. forever a red and white Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 A lot will depend on who drops out of the Prem. This. The teams that come down could be very strong, 18 potential points from these games, obviously win or lose makes the difference, but these games could be very tough, quite simply were not at the level yet. This is not negativity but realism and not putting expectations at a silly level.
Toomer Posted 5 May, 2011 Share Posted 5 May, 2011 On the plus side we will have a straight forward pre-season no speculation with regard to the manager as with last season and the will we still be in business the season before. I would like to think that Nigel Adkins has got a few players in mind to improve the squad and he will get together with Nicola very soon to talk them through, with a few players in IMO play offs are possible.
