I've noticed this season that the team actually approaches corners and free kicks a little differently from previous seasons.

So tired of hopeful balls being lobbed in and coming to nothing.

Its good to see set pieces being worked on and and different things being tried out. Granted they haven't worked all the time but when they do come off, they look good.

Now lets sort out the throw ins and use the multi-ball system properly, with the youth team players being trained in what needs to be done a la Reading a couple of seasons ago when they used it against us to great effect.

Anyone else think we can gain further small advantages on the pitch?

The best one was no doubt Hammond v Peterborough. Was brilliantly worked and we did try it a couple more times but it didn't quite come off.

Got to agree though, used to wonder why people were so excited over a corner knowing that nothing would come from it. Now we offer much more of a threat with more movement and little "blocks" here and there to open small pockets for players (ie Fonte, Jaidi) to run into.

All the players and management staff were quick to congratulate Andy Crosby at the end of the season for all the work he's put in on set-pieces, I think that's something we've been lacking for a long time.

Lee Barnard's free-kick vs Yeovil was a great set-play as well. Rickie passed it to the right of the penalty area where Barnard was unmarked with about 5 yards of space because everyone thought Rickie was going to shoot.

Being deadly from set-pieces will be absolutely vital next season, as the quality of defending will be better and we'll have less chances presented to us like they may have been over the last 2 years.

That also highlights what a good team player Rickie is, he could have been selfish, ingored Barneys run & had a crack himself.

I really liked the Jose Fonte header against Hartlepool (i think it was them). Lambert lined up to shoot but chipped it back post, fonte dropped off his marker and scored a diving header. Awesome. Hammonds goal against Hudd up there too. Gone are the days of sky tv defeats, conceding late goals and not scoring from set pieces. Good times.

We did that one at Orient too, forced a good save on that occasion. In fact we did it in practically every match for the last 6 weeks or so with one of Lambert or Harding clipping it in. Lambert also tried a low pass instead of a shot at Bournemouth which was comically bad, and then decided he was better off just lamping the next one. 3-1.

I can't see the Fonte far post fake working much in the Championship, it was pretty dismal defending to allow it in the first place - and much of the misdirection is caused by "knowing" Lambert will shoot, which Championship sides will need to be educated in before it will work at all.

We tried that a few times, and even when it doesn't work it gives the opposition something to think about. Remember one at orient when Fonte should have scored.

I like the way we sometimes overload an area in the box at corners and swing the ball in to 3 big men.

IMO we are still awfully inconsistent in terms of delivery from corners. The number of times the ball doesn't clear the first man is criminal - it should be at least 99% of the time. With the likes of Lambert, Fonte, Guly and Jaidi - all big blokes - we should be getting the ball onto their heads far more accurately.
