Good idea? if this is a one-off incident, why not..? could be good for the players to hear/see that people at the very top does care, and perhaps get another angle than what mr. Poortvliet offers. after recent results,I cant see it doing any harm,TBF ! if our chairman wasnt Lowe, most fans would be glad for the head honcho to give the lads a pep talk in tough times,IMO. Do you reckon? I can't imagine Man U fans being too happy if Glazer decided it was his role to motivate the lads. Wouldn't that be a massive slap in the face to Sir Alex? Isn't it tantamount to admitting the manager's not up to it or an admission that you think you could do better? I agree that if this was, for example, a cup final or a relegation decider/play-off match there's nothing wrong with the board members stepping in and saying good luck lads and uttering a sentence of encouragement or two....but giving a "pep-talk" - WTF? As an aside, if I was a young lad who'd grown up with one ambition, one burning ambition, to be a top-class professional football player, I don't think I'd be too impressed by a blustering, floppy haired gimp in a tweed blazer trying to do my manager's job. Classist, prejudiced? Most definitely. Justified? Almost certainly. Edited 28 October, 2008 by benjii

Well your opinion clearly isn't worth much then. I reckon that most fans don't want chairmen interfering in the dressing room or otherwise stepping on their manager's toes. Romanov at Hearts and Abramovich at Chelsea come to mind, and it was clear what everyone felt about that. I guess for some people Lowe really can do no wrong. (as a one-off incident) If JP hasn't got that authority then, given that these players were always going to be our "plan A" this season, Lowe has made another pathetic appointment. Surely he should have made sure there was a suitable "motivator", someone to be respected, a figure of authority who can't be undermined or messed with.... Nigel Pearson? Like I indicated above, I don't see anything wrong with a "good luck lads", but to occupy significant pre-match time in the dressing room (if that is what he has done) is just rather queer and screams of a lack of confidence in the team management. Channon's Sideburns Posted 28 October, 2008 Share Posted 28 October, 2008 Rod, For someone who takes his/her username from the combined names of some of our best players during the 90's, you should be well positioned to understand the reasons behind the hate shown towards Lowe and his Cronies. Back then, under Nicholl, we were playing fluent football, mixing youth AND experience and overturning the best - Liverpool 4-1 at home anyone??? Yes, I was there. In those days, hell you would probably ask 10 Saints fans who the chairman was and they wouldn't care - it was Askham the Bounty Hunter BTW.... Now, I despise Lowe for the attention seeking element of his personality and I don't want him anywhere near MY club - if he's such a great businessman (WH Ireland etc) just WHY the hell is he still bothering with Saints???????? Questions that have never been answered. The fact he sees that he can offer something inspiring in the changing rooms is plain stupidity - WGS would have had none of it. itchen Posted 28 October, 2008 Share Posted 28 October, 2008 I wouldn't necessarily take Solent's word for anything; it's not as though Merrington hasn't got an agenda is it? But, assuming Lowe did go in, we don't know what he said. Could well have been "Good luck lads" (or 'chaps' more likely) "do your best". I think lots of old school chairmen used to do that. Of course he might have said "You sit down Jan while I outline the tactics." But I doubt it. The Lowe obsession on this board is really a bit sad. Whether he has done any good or not isn't the point. He's there as a businessman, not as a football man, and I'm not commenting on his general abilities. What I'm saying is that, particularly in his role, so the **** what if he isn't your "common man", a council-estate born and bred football fan? As someone said, maybe he wanted to show the players he does care? We don't know the full story, but either way, too many people are too rabid and unconsidered about their views. Being a rich hickey sticks and ginger beer "type" shouldn't preclude anyone from getting invovled with football, business-wise or anything else. Plumstead_Saint Posted 28 October, 2008 Share Posted 28 October, 2008 (edited) Why not wait until the end of the game to gloat? FWIW Itchen I'll bet I talk to more Charlton supporters than you. BTW Charlton have a very good chairman who is totally supportive of every manager they have had, and doesn't interfere. Might explain why he doesn't get blamed? Ask your friends in Charlton what they know of Saints though, how come they know Rupert's name, and what they think of him? Try and differentiate between Knee jerk Lowe haters and people who judge him by his behaviour and record ? Otherwise you just look like knee JERKS yourselves. For me, I'm hoping that we can win this, and not just to prove a point on an internet fan board.
