St Marco Posted 9 December, 2008 Share Posted 9 December, 2008 Forest have lost once in 8 games now and are actually doing well now. Doncaster have also now only lost twice in 8. However Forest have 2 home games now then they play us. I would think they will get at least a point from their 2 home games before playing us. So we go to Burnley on saturday against a team in form and have lost only once at home for ages. Lost only 3 times in 26 games etc.. it will be a tough game make no mistake of it. If we play like the past 4 games we will get crushed. So im assuming we won't get anything there unless they do a Reading and not turn up. So then after possibly 2 defeats means playing Forest at home could mean if we win we put more points on the board and get further away from them. Or if we lose will most likely mean we go into the drop zone for xmas. Now people will say who cares if your in the bottom 3 at xmas? The problem is after looking at the table for the past 3 years at xmas only 1 team has then gone on to survive while the other 8 have all been relegated. To me i see this game as potentially huge and will shape the 2nd part to our season. If we lose the next 2 games will mean we have lost 12 of our 24 games (50%) and won only once in 12 at home. I just don't see how anyone could defend those type of figures at all. We all talk about how bad some previous managers have been i.e Branfoot years, but that would mean the Jan era would be catastrophic. Even our **** team from last year had over 10 points more by the same period...
Jonnyboy Posted 9 December, 2008 Share Posted 9 December, 2008 Agreed! The Forest game is massive psychologically. Ive always said give Jan until Jan and then see...

Micky Posted 9 December, 2008 Share Posted 9 December, 2008 It's a key game - but it wont shape the rest of our season. We could loose but when your capable of going to places like Reading, Preston and Sheffield and getting points then nothing is going to be decided on one game. Personally I think we will beat Forest - but I don't think that will have an overbearing effect on the rest of the season. What happens in January just might though. Personally I think we will beat Forest - but I don't think that will have an overbearing effect on the rest of the season. What happens in January just might though. I was at two of those games and would say we were very lucky to get something from them. Today showed me when you don't have luck you must create your own destiny. Meaning you have to be able to win games deservedly and we haven't been deserving. As i said if that scenario happens we will be up against it. Historicaly we are the great escapists so if any team can break the trend of going down while in the bottom 3 at xmas we can. But i think this will be our 1st proper must win game. The game will have a bigger crowd then normal due to the entry deal and will most likely be a win or go into the relegation zone game. If we win will give players confidence to keep going where as if we lose could mean 1 win in i think 10 games. Which obviously won't be good for confidence. At that point i can imagine the crowd will turn nasty. I could sense it today that people at the games are becoming more and more angry. If this happens would mean we won only 5 of our games (20% win ratio) but more importantly to me would show we have to change something. If that is the tactics or the manager we will see but we must play to our strengths and 3-5-1 is not it. To have those stats would not be defendable especially to the actual people at the games. Micky Posted 9 December, 2008 Share Posted 9 December, 2008 The term 'must win game' is used far to lightly and often out of context. The only real must win games are when you need the points from that (or those remaing) game(s) in order to either win the league, win the cup or avoid relegation. Forest is a big game, it's important, but it's not 'must win', nor is it the end of the season if we loose. As to whether we were lucky or not - it matters not a jot - we got the points. Win at Reading loose at home to Forest - only goes to show how unpredictable this league is, therefore nothing can be assumed because of one result. If we get relegated we get relegated - but it wont be due to any one result - likewise if we stay up you wont be able to point to one game as your banker. We will live or die over the course of the season - not by one single game.

But the football term 6 pointer is what this game will be. I really wish i could adopt your attitude and see it as you do in the "always next week" type of thinking but sadly i don't. I see it as a massive game and know the match going fans will agree. After half the season gone and half of the games being losses with but one win at home will not/is not defendable as much as you try to argue it can. To assume we will get out of it or simply get better must have evidence to support it. Other then the Reading game we have played ****. Relegation level ****. If we lose to Forest i just can't imagine many will be sharing your view Micky, it will probably seem a bit arrogant view based on a lot of "what if's". The only sure fire way for us to avoid it is to win our games, were not doing that. Even the most loyal of supporter will start to question what is going on if that happens. Massive game and a must win game for us. If we win things will be positive going into a hard run of games.
LaptopSaint Posted 9 December, 2008 Share Posted 9 December, 2008 Not a must win in terms of the table (although losing wouldn't be pretty) -- there's a long way to go. But a must win in terms of team psychology -- they have to get a win at home, simple as that. Time for some young lads to grow up fast.
St Marco Posted 9 December, 2008 Author Share Posted 9 December, 2008 This was the table last xmas if anyone is interested http://www.sportingchronicle.com/blogger/2007/12/championship-table-at-christmas-2007.html Which to me just shows as poor as it was last season it was better then this season. We can't afford to have a 2nd half to the season that replicated the 1st because 10 wins will mean we are down for sure. The other thing is Forest away is our last game of the season, they will be pumped for that game and that is another reason why we have to win this fixture. VectisSaint Posted 9 December, 2008 Share Posted 9 December, 2008 Bugger everything else, I want us to beat Forest because I hate them. I hate them for being our bogey team in the late 70s/80s, and beating us twice at Wembley. Oh and 3 points would be nice
Saints67 Posted 9 December, 2008 Share Posted 9 December, 2008 We appear to do better against sides who play a similar style of football as we do. The cloggers such as Watford and Palace roll us over and no doubt teams like this will do the same to Donny Rovers and Forest. Keeping these sides below us will be the difficult part and we must win home and away against both of them. We'll need results to go our way too and obviously our home form to start. scott_saints Posted 10 December, 2008 Share Posted 10 December, 2008 but we must play to our strengths and 3-5-1 is not it Is Lloyd James so cr@p that he doesn't even count as part of the formation?
londonsaint1604 Posted 10 December, 2008 Share Posted 10 December, 2008 I don't really see your point. You could say that the Burnley game is a must win game because if we don't win it confidence will be low and we won't beat forest. What if we beat burnley, and forest, doncaster and charlton all lose at the weekend, that would take a lot of pressure off. Or maybe we'll end up drawing with forest and go on to beat plymouth and reading again. It's far too unpredictable to place so much importance on 1 game half way through the season.
