Mr X Posted 28 December, 2008 Share Posted 28 December, 2008 Not trying to put even more blame on the guy I agree its not all his fault he's in the situation he is, but the fact remains we are in a tough relegation battle. just want a general consensus on what you have seen that shows he is potentially a good/bad manager? what are his good points and bad points so to speak? SoccerMom Posted 28 December, 2008 Share Posted 28 December, 2008 Normally I would have said that he's way too slow to bring on the subs, and makes some odd choices, but today I thought he got it right.
Give it to Ron Posted 28 December, 2008 Share Posted 28 December, 2008 Today taking Smith off...but you would of had to be blind not to see that he was absolute carp! But then he put Bradley on the left and Holmes on the right which at first I couldnt believe but then bang on with McLaggon coming on the right for Holmes just what was needed. Saint_clark Posted 28 December, 2008 Share Posted 28 December, 2008 I said at the start of half time that BWP should come on for Smith, but FFS they should have played on the right sides. Taking Paterson off was a bizarre one for me, thought he was terrific today.

Harry Faz Posted 29 December, 2008 Share Posted 29 December, 2008 For a start...we are playing the ball on the floor..which is far more entertaining I dont agree at all , and cant believe the OS and Jan keep peddling this nonsense. What is entertaining about passing across the back four ,and then eventually losing it without getting into their half, creating few real chances, scoring fewer goals, winning one game at home in the first half of the season, and sitting in the relegation zone? It was however more entertaining yesterday ( against reading) when we were more direct...

RobM Posted 29 December, 2008 Share Posted 29 December, 2008 Do we actually think JP is managing the team? Does he have full control over the players available to him each week? If not, I don't think he is any more than a head-coach who picks the players he is told are available to him.
qwertySFC Posted 29 December, 2008 Share Posted 29 December, 2008 Quote, JP It was good to give Ryan(Smith) the opportunity to play in the second half as he did not touch the ball at all in the first half Once we win we will be difficult to stop Our next game is a big test , I expect a big win (In the build up to the Coventry game ..we lost 4-1) How much more evidence do you need , this guy is on another planet

Playing on the right the full back knew he didnt have the pace or skill to get by him so kept blocking that off and forced him onto his left foot and covered any cross..forced him back and back. Oh for a manager that can see things early and make changes quickly (well for JP 45 mins is quickly)...remember Billy Davies you know the man that only plays long ball and bringing on Shaun Teale after 20 minutes stopping Bale marauding in the league game the other year. qwertySFC Posted 29 December, 2008 Share Posted 29 December, 2008 We played some beautiful football but got no points. We need to learn from that and work on the mental and physical side in training this week. There is no doubt the players are good enough. I am very happy with the performance today , the passion and the style of football but we need to win...

eurosaint Posted 29 December, 2008 Share Posted 29 December, 2008 I reckon that he has a blinkered view of what a successful team formation should be ! The obsession with 4-2-3-1 (assuming that's what it actually is!) is patently not achieving results and is directly affecting our home performances IMHO. Coupled with a number of unnecessary, inexperienced loan signings I would say that he has a helluva lot to learn about the harsh realities of life in the CCC ! St Landrew Posted 29 December, 2008 Share Posted 29 December, 2008 I take it we've all read this link today: http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/4005995.Jan_calls_for_a__unified__Saints_in_2009/ Jan's problem is that he doesn't know the history of SFC in the last 12 years or so. He doesn't know that Rupert has never been fully accepted by Saints fans. Even during high points of his tenure there has been genuine dislike of RL. OK, that's possible of any chairman, but he happens to be our chairman, along with the supposed football club chairman, Michael Wilde. So we have not one, but two hated figures at the top of the club. Add in **Guy I'll take my 30 pieces of silver now Askham, and you have quite a hated trio. Sadly, Jan Poortvliet and Mark Wotte are tarred with that same brush, through little fault of their own, in my opinion. **allegedly. :smt012

krissyboy31 Posted 30 December, 2008 Share Posted 30 December, 2008 Which is probably why he's head coach and not manager. I think that is exactly the point. The likes of Saggy Chops, Big Sam Allardyce and even Alex Ferguson do not really get involved with the coaching side at their clubs. They have teams of respected coaches around them. Their success is because they are man-managers, motivators and organisers and most importantly have a massive understanding of English football, the league in which they participate and the opposition they will encounter. They have dossiers on the teams, their players, the systems they play, their strengths and their weaknesses. Now, I wouldn't want Saggy Chops, don't like Big Sam and I don't think Sir Alex is available. But our only hope of surviving the drop is to get in a proper manager. AndyNorthernSaints Posted 30 December, 2008 Share Posted 30 December, 2008 Just read his piece on OS "Jan likes competition for places" and am a bit worried that he rates Smith and thought he was playing well on sunday? and that the substitution did not reflect the way he was playing. Personally i think Smith has been poor every time i've seen him play.
