Just as a bit of "fun".

 

I've watched the super slow-mo's several times and so I am quite amazed that some people seem to think McGoldrick committed a handball.

 

Now, I enjoy a tommy-tank as much as the next man but I'm pretty confident that it is really quite obvious that the ball hit McGoldrick on the back of his shoulder/neck and head and that my eyesight is superb.

 

Can we settle this once for all?

On a more interesting note, imagine if video evidence was used and the pen had still been given. I'd have been ****ing livid!!

Is it to ruin games by using the letter of the law or can they use their own initative.to allow the game to be enjoyed by the fans.

 

Once Patterson was sent off there was unlikely to be a good game and giving a controversial penalty completely ruined it.

 

A lot of games these days are affected by the referees errors

Normally, I am very forgiving of refs (apart from the idiot who reffed the Wolves game) but Riley is a United-favourer of some repute. Look at his record in their games.

 

So if I can see it, so can the FA.

 

Yet they still let him ref their games.

I'm saying that the point of contact was diametrically on the other side to Kelvin's position. Riley probably had the best view and yet the ball couldn't possibly have hit anywhere near where he was indicating. He saw what he wanted to see.

ill give you a different perspective of why the ref was so poor, he blew his whistle for most fouls, the penalty and the red card before the offence was even completed, he looks to give teams like man utd every foul etc, he takes no time to say lets think about this, take account of the situation he just give it to the big boys. also how many times did he instruct his 'assistants(lol)' to change the direction of a throw in, i counted at least 2, what the hell are they there for?

yeah, he'd done what he had to do by then, no need for any more. I think what disappointed me most of all was Nani and his antics. The other players just put in a solid professional performance, no unnecessary showboating.

To my mind this was a cert penalty.

 

We were dire and lucky to escape with a 3-0 scoreline.

 

However would have been interesting if the three 'contentious' issues ie first goal/pen and sending off had been given against Utd. Feel sure Fergie would have taken it in a sporting manner!!

no wonder man u got more fouls...they had the ball far more than us and we were chasing them all over the park....,making alot of last ditch tackles..

 

it is like the old beauty..not many away teams get penalties at old trafford..well, not many away teams spend any time in the penalty area at old trafford for a start

Looked to me like Skacel and Lancashire just plain muscled him off the ball. Nanni seemed to go over a tad theatrically too with his legs in the air when noone had even touched them.

 

Good decision not to give that one IMO. The penalty that was given may not have been a handball, but you can't say we didn't deserve it behaving like that in a wall.

It didn't touch his arm at all.. McGoldrick raised his arm but thats irrelevant. Ashley Young raised his arm the other night but his was not a penalty. Silly, yes, but that doesn't mean its a penalty.

It was a very poor decision from one of our 'better' referees, but I'd much rather have had the handball decision go in our favour against Reading.

When my son and I watched the replay at full speed we both thought that if we had been reffing in real time we would probably have awarded a penalty.

Similarly I would have sent the saints player off.

Although it wasn't replayed I would have liked to have seen the pull back on the Saints forward that the radio 5 commentators said was a pen.

 

having umpired at cricket, (but never reffed seriously) I know just how difficult it is to make the right decision in real time.

 

My favourite comment was from an umpire in the fifties who being berated by a Yorkshire player for giving him out LBW and said it wasn't out replied-

 

"Look in tomorrow's papers lad, and you'll see whether you were out lbw or not."

 

Personally although I've seen some diabolical decisions I think that the TV pundits make too much of it, it's easy to be right sitting comfortably watching countless slow-mo replays.

Either we accept that there will always be mistakes or we insist on the fourth official reviewing comntentious decisions-and the players or managers shouldn't be the ones to decide what is reviewed!.

I've just seen it for the first time (was having a chicken balti in the concourse when it happened) and was very surprise to see it definitely hit his arm. No doubt about it in my mind, you can tell by the bit of his shirt it catches. From the post match reactions I was already convinced it was nowhere near his arm.

People on here have defended Paterson's lunge on the basis that his studs touched the ball before clattering into shin.

 

On the same basis, I reckon it was a pen because it looks to have touched McG's upper arm before touching his head.

 

In any case, any player who jumps at a lofted ball AND lifts his arm straight up AND turns his head away so he can't see it is a dope.

 

When coaching kids about making a wall, you always tell them to face up and try hard NOT to turn their backs on the ball when it comes in.
