Frank's cousin Posted 4 March, 2009 Share Posted 4 March, 2009 Its conceivable that this situation might arrise where we both simply need a draw to guarrantee wee stay up - which is then bound to happen ;-) Hypothetically speaking, ifr that were the case, how would you feel about this? Given the way we go on and on about the Germany -Austria stitich up in WC 82?

If a pact of non-aggression suits everybody then I'm all for it.Football clubs look at things that way I think. We take a few supporters to most away games, I'm sure that we're better appreciated than say Barnsley or Blackpool, mind I do like to be beside the seaside springs to mind.. Whitey Grandad Posted 4 March, 2009 Share Posted 4 March, 2009 These things happen all the time in Italy (allegedly). If one team need the points and it means nothing to the other then it is just good manners....

Given the way we go on and on about the Germany -Austria stitich up in WC 82?[/quote'] The average Austrian was just as angry about that game as everyone else was. They f**king hate the Germans at normal citizen level, and would rather have been sent home on the back of a defeat having tried to beat them. Look how Austria raised its game against Germany in Euro2008. Germany could have been 3-0 down in half an hour if the Austrians had had a decent striker over 20 years old. Now, why does that sound familiar...
Gemmel Posted 4 March, 2009 Share Posted 4 March, 2009 I have a feeling this is still going to go to the wire and that both teams might need a result from the game. Hope i'm wrong, but it won't be for the fainthearted if we need something up there.

I suggest that they use jumpers for goalposts on either side of the half-way line, play the match across the pitch with these "goals", and make sure the ball doesn't go anywhere near either of the real goals. Just like on the last day at Villa Park (1997?), when Villa needed one point to guarantee a UEFA spot and we needed one point to guarantee staying up. On the way to the ground every one of their fans was laughing and saying "no one attack!" to which we all laughed and agreed of course. It was a standing joke. It was sunny and the beers were cold. We were staying up, no problem! And then we scored an own goal in the first 10 minutes....

The own goal rolled in right in line with me, at least Middlesborough failed to beat Leeds.
revolution saint Posted 4 March, 2009 Share Posted 4 March, 2009 I remember several last gasp escapes on the last day. Oldham (Benali day) - they needed a win and rely on other results. We played our hearts out even though there was nothing in it for us. At the start I just wanted a win but when you could see just how much it meant to their fans I have to say it's one of the few games I was happy we lost. Had a great day out and their fans were top notch. West Ham - We needed something out of the game to stay up. Naively I thought it would be a repeat of the Oldham game but no, ****ney tossers showed themselves to be the ungracious whiners that they are. Even had that pathetic pitch invasion. I've little love for that club. Wimbledon - I genuinely felt sorry for them when we sent them down. I didn't particularly like them but they (the fans) cared about their club which was more than the players they had out that day did. I guess I'd hate to be in a position where we could send someone down, or we could go down but I'd hope at the end whatever the result there would be a bit of empathy amongst the fans - it's more rewarding. Besides I've always liked Forest and they've had an even tougher time than us which is saying something.
