Villa and Everton after Surman?

Can't see it. What do people see in Surman? Such an average player, even amongst the rubbish in this league.

I tend to agree but he has shown moments of genuine talent and looked promising a few years back. In my eyes he's just never realized his potential.

Master Bates posted some links to the report in the "Surman's Miss" thread.

EVERTON and Aston Villa are in a race to sign Southampton midfielder Andrew Surman.

The South African-born 22-year-old has represented the England Under-21s and is a key player at the Saints.

a lot. Decent first touch, good engine, ability to beat a man, scores goals, tackles. None of which could be seen last night where he had an absolute mare, but his off the ball running alone will be missed badly when he leaves.

I agree. I think he has played much better since Wotte has taken over and started playing him in his proper position (can't comment on last night because I wasn't there). I think his main problem is that he is expected to carry, what most of the season has been a sh!t team. Put him in the Villa team and IMO, he'll show just what a good player he is.

But he has games like last night quite often. He shows those qualities at times, but more often than not he has been ordinary. IMO he has been average for quite a while now and has been living off his 2006/07 season form. I don't understand why people think he could play in the Premiership. Even some of the best players in the Championsh*t have struggled to make the step up recently (eg. Nugent, Earnshaw etc) How is someone like Surman, who hasn't exactly stood out, (how often does Surman take the game by the scruff of the neck and really influence things for us?) expected to cut it at the highest level? If he was that good he wouldn't have been dropped for Mario Licka. Also, he's 23 this year, so I think it's about time people stopped using the oh he's too young excuse.

I agree he's got plenty of talent...i don't believe he'll be signing for top half Premier teams when he does leave though...

Yeah, for me he is the first name on the sheet, stays behind after training, box to box player. At the end of the day the boy done well, great first touch for such a big lad. He set his stall out early in a game that could have been a potential banana skin, but it's a game of two halves. The boy gives 110% and really has helped make this place the fortress it is today. You can't blame him for not scoring, the goalkeeper made himself very big there. You need a bit of lady luck and next time he might have his scoring boots on, innit.

And the Skates

Portsmouth are reportedly in a race with Aston Villa and Everton for Southampton's highly rated midfielder Andrew Surman.

A "race" that won't be completed til the transfer window reopens?

By which time Pompey will be readjusting their transfer budget for the Championship...

After watching him today against QPR,i think we should try and get as much money as we can for him.

He hasnt been his best for a long time.I dont know if hes lost his confidence or is just not bothered, but either way we cant afford to keep letting him miss easy goals.

Either sell him or drop him to the reserves. But please do it soon.

Harsh to criticise and single out Surman.

Yes, he has been far from his best in recent games, but over the whole season, he's been one of our more consistent performers.

Some people seem to forget that he's been called up to the England Under-21's this season, so he must be doing something right.

If we were to lose/sell Drew, you can guarantee that people on here will be kicking up a fuss.

Sorry, you might be right, think it was last season on second thought! Still, the very fact that he's played for the Under-21's and is constantly linked with bigger clubs shows that he is doing something right.

I just find it very hard to understand how fickle some fans can be. One minute it's a disaster if we lose Surman, now after he's had a few poor games everyone is saying he should be sold at the first possible chance.

Whilst he hasn't been 'at the races' so to speak in recent games, you can't fault him for effort. To me, he just looks a little tired and low on confidence. I wonder if the people criticising him would still be on his case had he scored right at the death? I'm not so sure! Just shows how fickle fans can be IMO.

More like Aldershot and Exeter, he was absolute dog**** today.

Nil Saints players good enough for Exeter at the mo. Saw them today beat Bradford 1-0...Exeter will give Saints a good game next season..Half their side with a few from Bradford could walk into Saints team....Sad to say Exeter have more go in them than The mighty Saints.

Mind you Exeter and Bradford are run by proper football coach/manager..unlike my friendly Dutch Maestro.

Further evidence of the dearth of English prospects emerging in the game perhaps ?

i'm sorry but are you talking about another player??

everytime he goes forward and loses the ball, he's virtually walking back, it's like a slow jog and that for me isn't a good engine.

and he doesn't tackle at all, his attempts at tackling re pathetic, he pokes a foot out in the hope the opposition player will miss-control. a good example is routledge today, he was going past him everytime with ease, it was like he wasn't there

it's a shame as 2 seasons ago he could have been "the next big thing", but he's flopped and after the last 2 performances really should be dropped.

he's our weakest player and get's made to be shown as poor in this league, very very poor player.

According to Yahoo EuroSport;

Speaking of transfer races, Aston Villa and Everton are reportedly involved in a tepid long-distance encounter to procure the services of Southampton midfielder Andrew Surman.

Hate to say this as Drew is a fan but...

Let's big him up and sell him for an overinflated price tag in the summer. He is not Premiership standard and frankly we could find a suitable League 1 man - with an engine - as a replacement for him relatively easily IMHO.
