Colinjb Posted 1 April, 2009 Share Posted 1 April, 2009 Well, it's happening, the club is beggining to implode and the follies of all previous chairmen come back to haunt the people it matters to most, the fans. If it is a new owner, administration or even god forbid liquidation that follows there is going to be one constant in it all. Us. While the fans stay strong, stay behind the idea and entity that is Southampton Football Club then there will always be a club to support, long after the Wildes, Crouchs, Askhams and Lowes of the world are gone. Many clubs have fallen into similar states before and risen back, Middlesborough, Charlton, Wimbledon, Fiorentina, hell even the Skates! They have survived! Grown! And so can we! The constant there wasn't the chairmen, it was their fans, the backing they gave allowed the clubs to continue even if it was in a radically different form, it was still their club. Clubs of lower stature have made it back, and so will we! A year is a long time in football, and even though the league we will be in now seems certain, the circumstance behind the scenes by then may be entirely different. We will survive, our club will survive because of us! COYR!!!

Gemmel Posted 1 April, 2009 Share Posted 1 April, 2009 Fair play Colin and for whats its worth i completely agree. However, one thing that we are lacking is any form of recognisable supporters group, or one with significant numbers to carry any real weight. It might just be that we need one over the coming months and would urge the Saints Trust, SISA or whoever to rebrand, redefine themselves or whatever is needed to present a credible supporters group that we can all get behind. wild-saint Posted 1 April, 2009 Share Posted 1 April, 2009 However fooked off I am this morning, I am still really looking forward to the game at the weekend and the chance of getting out of the relegation zone (albeit before a uber points dedcution for the dodgy shenaningans of our smug arogant chairman) IS this a bit odd to be looking forward to a game at such sad time for our club? Yes you are right but the club will always be there and there will be good times ahead somewhere along the line. Having supported the club for fifty years I remember the good times with affection when money had not ruined football like it has today. The Premiership with all its money has caused our demise bring in people like Lowe Hone Delieau etc who are in it to get some of this money

saintstr1 Posted 1 April, 2009 Share Posted 1 April, 2009 No need to be so melodramatic. We're not the first and we won't be the last. I think there is everyneed , Especially when some idiot starts blaming the likes of Lawrie Mac. You have to look no further than LOWE & WILDE. I will be the first to admit that we might still have been heading for financial problems & Administration had Crouch & Pearson stayed on but I am 100% sure we would have been in a far better position to deal with it, Our gates this season would have been much higher as would our points total. We could have probably taken a 10 point hit and remained in the CCC. I will say it again ALL our present woe's have been caused by LOWE & WILDE. They are a cancer at SFC and the club will only improve once they are removed for good.

Minty Posted 1 April, 2009 Share Posted 1 April, 2009 (edited) I thought the whole point of this thread was to concentrate on us, the fans, the one true constant (I hope)... not to have yet another blame game thread. And FWIW I wholeheartedly agree with Colin. So much so that I would urge anyone who wants to spend time blaming others and/or doing the whole 'I told you so' thing to stop for a moment and think what the point is of that? Yeah, maybe you'll feel better after spouting off, but it won't actually help the club. I know this is an open forum and opinions are important, but i just hope that we won't spend too much time looking at the past, when it's the future (if we are to have one) that is so vital now. Baj Posted 1 April, 2009 Share Posted 1 April, 2009 It's an utterly sobering situation isn't it. I very rarely post on the mainboard, mainly because the opinions are usually so polarised that trying to hold a sensible debate is almost impossible, but right now i feel compelled to post and get a few things off my chest. What matters most? Watching Saints in the top flight or watching saints. When I look back at when I first started following the saints, it only seemed to matter that we were playing big teams, not in the actual top league itself. I was more in love with the saturday football experience, I still am. Ive been thinking long and hard this morning, lots of "what if" scenarios, and you know what, I couldnt give a **** what league we play in, and I honestly mean that. If we go into administration and lose our squad, I wont feel less for the club, i'll love it more. Like a loved one that's sick, you appreciate them more when they are down on their luck. What matters to me is watching 11 men in red and white (well, 10 and the keeper) on a saturday afternoon trying to scrape out a win. Yes, being in the premiership was great, but did it mean less when the money wasn't there? If things go as we expect, we're all going to have to all take a long hard look at what we really follow saints for, and im sure 99.9% of us will come to the same conclusion, it's my town/team, I love them and I'll follow them. Of course, gates will be lower, but only on reflection of the league and opposition, but the fans will remain, even if they don't put their bums in seats. Its The Saints, it'll always be The Saints no matter what league we play in, I will always love the club, no matter what league we play in. If this is the pain we have to go through to get OUR club back, then so be it. Come on you reds.

Soooo if we did keep Pearson and Crouch and things still went tits up on the pitch (as they did last year) we'd just have got into administration sooner! My point is that short of promotion, we'd have gone into administration. Some blame lack of investment, but who the hell is going to risk their money buying a footy club? It's a hiding to nothing most of the time.

Muckers Posted 1 April, 2009 Share Posted 1 April, 2009 had already planned to go to the last seven games as I had an idea we were doomed, one way or another, tickets already bought and travel being planned. Well lets start planning the end of this dreadful period of our history starting on Saturday and then through to the end of the season. Win if we can, play as best as we can but whatever the results or the end of season outcome support our team COYR.
egreog Posted 1 April, 2009 Share Posted 1 April, 2009 Maybe its just me...... but i feel a strange excitement about this whole thing...... that adversity will galvanise what is left of the club at all levels and could be the beginning of something special.........maybe not of course, but something positive would seem to be possible!! Amesbury Saint Posted 1 April, 2009 Share Posted 1 April, 2009 There is a very important match on Saturday. I hope everybody on here is going and encouraging their friends and families to go as well. Last match of last season SMS was full. Need to do it again for the next 3 home matches. If you cannot go - buy a ticket for a mate. It would be good to see a sticky encouraging people to go and reminding us of the cheap prices. Time to stand up and be counted.

More of their fans are watching them now, in the 6th or 7th tier than when they were in the Prem And they are still getting just as big, if not more of a kick out of watching them then they where a decade ago. Window Cleaner Posted 3 April, 2009 Share Posted 3 April, 2009 Did you know that the title "Brave New world" was lifted by Huxley from a speech by Miranda in the Tempest. It reappears in germinal by Zola "He laughed at his earlier idealism, his schoolboy vision of a brave new world in which justice would reign and men would be brothers." Doesn't that about sum up Mike Wilde.
West End Saint Posted 3 April, 2009 Share Posted 3 April, 2009 I think the club had to hit rock bottom before things could get better we have 15000 to 20000 hardcore support that is the envy of many other clubs the factors that have been causing a split in the fan base are no more I feel sure that the spirit of Southampton will reignite and grow stronger we have a fantastic club in a fantastic part of the world a large proportion of the best days in my life have come watching Saints and I know many will say the same with the people of our great city behind them the Saints will go marching on can't wait for tomorrow come on you mighty Saints
