Noodles34 Posted 27 May, 2009 Share Posted 27 May, 2009 Its just been reported that Spurs made a bid of £20 million for Kenwyn Jones back in the transfer window last winter, obviously rejected but has football gone mad? A good player yeah, but that puts him in the same league as Robbie Keane and Torres! Or is it just the usual Harry 'spend as much money as possible to get a result' Redknapp policy? And most importantly did we get a sell on clause??
Master Bates Posted 27 May, 2009 Share Posted 27 May, 2009 Saints made £4.9m on Jones with regards to transfer fee, sell on clause and saving of wages, and John’s wages and agent’s fee came to £400,000. http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/untoldstories/4368386.Missing___15m_target_meant_Plan_B_failed/ Speaking of madness, i'm now coming offline for a couple of hours to watch "Return to Oz"
Bailey Posted 27 May, 2009 Share Posted 27 May, 2009 Ridiculous money. Jones is a good player, but never in a million years is he worth £20m. Sunderland should have taken that money and signed a replacement in the summer!

I should think in a million years £20m won't be worth much, even with current interest rates. *Please please someone work this out*

I'm off down to the bank to borrow 50 million euros then. I'll keep enough to make the repayments and interest up till 20/12/12 and squander the rest on....well I'll think of something, most of which will involve loose women and booze.Leaving Las Vegas sort of style for a bit over 3 years. Hopkins Posted 27 May, 2009 Share Posted 27 May, 2009 Not exactly average is he. On his day, like Drogba, although not technically superb he is quite simply unplayable and with a bit of coaching he could do that on a regular basis. Nobody is buying his technical ability and class like a Torres or Keane but his power and ability to destroy any defender and defence is worth 20 million if he is being coached and playing for a top level team. Only problem is Spurs are not that team IMO.
Red Stripe Posted 27 May, 2009 Share Posted 27 May, 2009 Harry must think he can work on him, which is fair enough, but £20mill is obscene!
RedAndWhite91 Posted 27 May, 2009 Share Posted 27 May, 2009 Whaaaaaaaat. No way is Jones worth £20 million... I thought we got a good deal when we sold him, I remember being surprised at the price. I agree with Red Stripe - £20mil is obscene!
Junior Mullet Posted 27 May, 2009 Share Posted 27 May, 2009 He's a quality player and I've often said that there is nobody else quite like him around. He's an odd shaped jigsaw piece but worth a lot to anyone requiring that one final piece. Torres is worth a lot more than £20m and Keane is, IMO, overvalued at £20m. Hopkins Posted 27 May, 2009 Share Posted 27 May, 2009 Not really considering if Harry and Spurs think he along with others could fire them into the top 6. Also you seem to be implying there is common sense and value for money when it comes to football transfers. That went ages ago. Players go for the price the selling club need to fund a replacement plus other possible investments. Not what players are worth. Players have no worth. If the buying club say he is only worth 10 million but the selling club want 20m because they need 15 for a replacement and the other 5 for other projects then the buying club have to give them 20 or there going to miss out. There are loads of strikers like him around who are all a lot better, most score more goals and are a lot less sulky. Just in the Premiership you've got: Drogba Adebayor Yakubu Saha Carew Cole Caicedo All similar Premiership strikers to KJ, not saying they're all better than him but the majority are. mynameisthehulk Posted 27 May, 2009 Share Posted 27 May, 2009 (edited) The people who are saying he is not worth £20m are probably the same that said he was the worst player they had ever seen in a Saints shirt, and the same people that said "bite their hands off" when Sunderland offered £6m. The guy has abilities you just cant coach, and is still developing the abilities that you can. He is worth more than Robbie Keane IMO. ottery st mary Posted 27 May, 2009 Share Posted 27 May, 2009 KJ is improving...But his transfer to big clubs will depend on agents and suitcases...So they so in the underground. Agents and transparency do not always go together eh! Arry bo.. Where is our own Phil De Whale...When you need transparency.
Fan The Flames Posted 27 May, 2009 Share Posted 27 May, 2009 He will end up with a similar scoring rate as Keane, so worth the same type of money. Keane 0.45 goals a game, Jones 0.39.
Chez Posted 27 May, 2009 Share Posted 27 May, 2009 he offers something very few other Premeirship strikers can and that's raw power and fantastic arial abililty both in attack and defence. cvntflaps loves the big man small man combination and Jones/Defoe is not a bad pairing if you ask me. I for one thought £6m was a steal and felt we could have got more if Jones had not been such a ******.
Ponty Posted 27 May, 2009 Share Posted 27 May, 2009 How much would that be per goal on his average of a handful a season?
Andy_Porter Posted 27 May, 2009 Share Posted 27 May, 2009 In the prem Jones has scored 17 goals in 5107 minutes. Really nothing special.
bigjohn Posted 27 May, 2009 Share Posted 27 May, 2009 I remember so many posts on this site when he was with us that failed to recognise his potential and argued that Blackstock or Best were better bets for the long term. The major thing Jones always had was far more athletic raw talent than either of them. It is that which alied to good coaching and the further development of his physical frame will make him better than Carew for instance. It is interesting that Sturrock, Burley and Rednap all rated his potential contrary to the majority view on the terraces at the time
scotty Posted 27 May, 2009 Share Posted 27 May, 2009 Harry must think he can work on him, which is fair enough, but £20mill is obscene! Good point. As long as Harry Redknapp is Spurs manager theres absolutely no question of any backhanders or anything like that being involved in this ludicrous bid

He was always an athlete but did look completely shocking with the ball when he first joined us. Then he got his head down a bit and worked to his strengths. Legod Third Coming Posted 27 May, 2009 Share Posted 27 May, 2009 We have never been fans of strikers who score at this club have we... Rasiak and John were too lazy, Jones didn't look right.... On an associated subject some arse said on the radio the other day that Beattie has yet to prove himself in the Premiership - what, I thought, apart from losing out on the Golden Boot to Henry by a couple of goals while playing for a team that scored half the number as Arsenal... Stirkers and opinions eh? Who'd have 'em?
