Personally, I think I'm just numb from our complete capitulation since February. Part of me doesn't really care if we go down and thinks it's what we'd probably deserve if the unlikely chain of results were to conspire against us. I think this general sense of apathy means that I'm looking at the situation in a more objective, and less pessimistic, way than I might usually. Anyway, Chelsea will probably do the business tonight and put this conversation to bed.

Sorry if already covered, but do we think their our insipid end to the season and the (very slight) lingering risk of relegation is derailing our transfer / new contract plans? One assumes that you want to be mathematically safe before progressing with deals etc?

Current odds of 100-1 for Saints to gown suggest it is massively unlikely though?

Worth pointing out again that the 06th place finish under Koeman in 2016 was 63 points, whereas the 8th place finish under Puel in 2017 was 46 points, a massive negative swing of 17 points. Ralph bettered that total when we finished 11th in 2020 (52 points).

I think we need something like 8 of 12 games left involving us, Everton, Burnley and Leeds to go against us for us to go down. Massively unlikely.

I thought we’d made such progress earlier this season, plenty of clean sheets and generally restricted defeats to a single goal or two. Now look at us, the most porous defence out there right now. We seem a bit like a turbo charged Renault 5, mixing it with the big boys only for the turbo to break down and being ruthlessly exposed.

With the 'devastating' news that Neighbours is shortly going to end after 37 years, does anyone else remember when Saints briefly appeared on it back in 1992? It related to a story where Debbie Martin went to London and ended up at Highbury watching us lose (naturally) 4-3 to Arsenal. Yeah, there is only a tiny chance of us going down, but also a moderate chance of us not being mathematically safe come final day. I'm sure we all agree that we could definitely do without that being the case and it will hopefully provide a modicum of motivation to the team against Brentford. Hard to believe that we're even having to have a conversation about this when you consider where we were a few months ago. Good old Saints FFS!
