  1. Pards on FF now, will hopefully show our goals...
  2. Really? really? Those who blow up abortion clinics, shout abuse at gay funerals, or kill their own children due to "honour" issues would no doubt include themselves in that group...
  3. Good post, agree with pretty much everything here - especially your last paragraph. As a recent "Born again atheist" it's been quite illumating stepping outside of religion and challenging my somewhat indoctrinated beliefs (I was never a regular adult church-goer, but was raised a catholic, catholic school etc.). I have been reading quite a bit about this stuff recently. Enjoyed The God Delusion, and have also read some interesting stuff by the likes of Sir David Attenborough. One of the reasons I think that more atheists, humanists etc. have come to the fore is the growing (and worrying) army of the "religious right" in the US and now here. How people can actually disbelieve evolution and follow the bible-based creationist view of the world to is beyond belief to me. We now have creationist schools in the UK. That, to me, is terrifying. By the way, if you want a decent film on this topic - and a bloody good laugh - go buy Bill Maher's "Religilous". It's a Michael Moore-esque documentary on religion. BM is a liberal talkshow host/comedian in the USA (a sane voice in the sea of Glen Beck's / Rush Limbaughs etc.). It's only about £4 on Amazon. One footnote on Richard Dawkins - I loved Frankie Boyle's view on him (paraphrased) - "I agree with a lot of what he says, but he's just so smug about the meaninglessness of live; "That's right, we're just a bunch of over-developed monkey's, clinging to a rock, spinning through space"." A thought provoking statement if ever I heard one!
  4. Why? Seemed a perfectly reasonable question, given Rovers weren't wearing them. Somewhat of an overreaction I feel...
  5. X-Ray Specs on a kids programme - fantastic! I loved that album (Germ Free Adolesence), esp "Identity", what a classic. This leads me on to another topic which might fit this thread - music of the day. Now I know that every generation thinks their era is the best, but really growing up with Punk, New Wave, Electro, two tone, and some top soul music too was just incredible. Give me that soundtrack to my youth any day vs. the safe sanitised and, let's face it, BORING, "R'n'B" that kids grow up with these days... ...discuss!
  6. I remember the one in the precinct in the late 70's - remember the day vividly, not so much for the roadshow, but as I'd unadvisedly given the fingers to some huge punk on a bus (who was from King Edwards believe it or not!) who then proceeded to chase me and my mates through town. Come to think of it, it was reminiscent of a scene from 'Going Out' (per posts above).
  7. That's it! It was pretty bad and didn't last too long. Much of the cast were in Going Out too.
  8. Correct!! Yes, Target was based in Southampton. Can't remember many other dramas based in the area - other than Howard's Way obviously. FYI here's a list of Southern TV productions. http://www.imdb.com/company/co0103379/ And programs/films set in Southampton http://www.imdb.com/List?endings=on&&locations=Southampton,%20Hampshire,%20England,%20UK&&heading=18;with+locations+including;Southampton,%20Hampshire,%20England,%20UK Somewhat related, there was of course the classic episode of "Man About The House" when Robin Tripp was trying to get to the Saints v Arsenal game and broke down. Think he got picked up by some Hells Angels if memory serves. Richard O'Sullivan is a local lad and a Saints fan, hence him making Robin Tripp from So'ton too.
  9. More on Going Out here - seems mostly filmed in P*mpey, but definintely remember some scenes behind that grey building next to The Mayflower. http://www.going-out.org.uk/
  10. A TV based memory... anyone remember "Houseparty"? Ok, anyone remember their mum watching it?? Basically a 1970's 'Loose Women' prototype where a bunch of women would get together under the guise of a coffee morning and discuss issues or show how to do something like flower arranging. Distant memory... anyone remember any of them? Am sure one was called Cherry, and there was a quite fit blonde one. Also, on a TV theme - there just MUST be a poster or two who appeared on 'Runaround' or 'The Saturday Banana'?? Come on admit it? PS Anyone remember a 'yoof' drama called "Going Out" - was made by TVS (or possibly even Southern TV) - and was filmed in Southampton and Portsmouth. I think Perry Benson (This is England, Somers Town) was in it, with a load of other Anna Scher drama school alumni. Many of them were also in some 15 minute soap on TVS about a radio station... anyone remember any more??
  11. Hardly think Brighton rates as a "major city" (!!) - they've only just become one for a start - but the nightlife is good there, but it has to be as the city finances are based around tourism, unlike other "working cities" which rely on other, more mundane, commercial activity. Blackpool is similar, although slightly more 'low rent'.
  12. Can't agree on Kevin Davies - he wasn't getting a regular place and I am not sure his time at Bolton would register with him (or anyone else) as a "bad move"! Not sure it quite fits your point, but years ago I was always banging on about making Matt Oakley our captain, and building the team around him (post MLT). Seems to have worked well for him and Derby and Leicester. Always a very underrated player imo, and never quite given the credit he deserved by many of our fans (a la Davies and Magilton).
  13. NO! Sounds like a total and utter ****. And not half as good as he thinks he is either.
  14. Hadn't realised their ground had been so developed (rebuilt?). Looks quite nice. Last time I was there was to watch Glen ****erill and it was falling apart...
  15. I presume Anderton and Horsey Hateley were left off due to their brief tenure, but I was surprised to not see Vince Hilaire on their list. As you say, take out those from their war-time glory years and, other than the recent fleeting mercenaries, you're left with some real dross.
  16. Indeed, but as your link to the Times site confirmed, you'd have to be over 70 to remember any of them! As I suspected, no contest...
  17. Mark "moving to a big club" (Derby?!) Wright above MLT? I assume you're having a laugh?!
  18. Wonder what a similar list for P*mpey would look like? In a 50 a-side game, we'd murder them!!
  19. Great article with some great memories, but I think Matty just has to be #1 (and I absolutely idolised Mick Channon) due, among other things, to the fact that he stayed his whole career.
  20. Could apply to any pub in Southampton in the 70's!!
  21. And I used to take Jim's doberman for a walk, when he was living at his digs in Portswood.
  22. Then there was the one about Fleming park's pool water turning red if you p*ssed in it! Think we believed that for about 3 weeks before someone put it to the test... PS I always heard the lido was 70%... still, never stopped any of us going in!
  23. Also remember the woman on Kingsland market who sold fruit & veg - she used to yell "Olly olly olly - we got the colly if you got the lolly!" (colly = cauliflower) . One of my earliest memories - it was full of characters in 'them days'...
  24. Anyone remember how cold those outdoor showers were at the Lido? I swear they were freezing even in '76...
