  2. La Rosiere is linked with La Thuile over the pass on the Italian side: easy enough to get to Italy apart from a final slow drag lift and worth going over for the skiing it opens up. Plenty of skiing for your beginners and a number of fast detachable 6 man chairs from resort level at LR, so not too much of a bottleneck. Never had queues there, but I can be a bit selective when I ski and Sundays (bad everywhere in the ALps) I play football anyway. It can be a bit windy up at the top of the pass but that's no problem given the lower stuff available. You can't predict accurately as snow does melt :-), but plenty of snow at the moment and (high avalanche risk): 160cm at resort level and 270cm at Le Fort... HTH

  4. If any of you want to do further research I'll be skiing (or have already skied) this season at Cervinia, Champoluc, Courmayeur, Crevacol, Gressoney (various + Alagna), La Thuile, Pila and over the border in La Rosiere, Zermatt and, hopefully, Verbier.
  5. I might go tomorrow but had a pretty bad fall last week and the bruise is now a vivid yellow and my thigh feels a bit weak. The recent snow here on the Italian side of Mont Blanc/Monte Bianco has been good so a base has already been established for the season and I've already done some off-piste (plus some avalanche transceiver training), so I'm set to go... Off to the UK soon for Christmas, but if anyone needs some local advice let me know... cheaper than France here, that's for certain...

  9. So you're blithely unaware that the share of national wealth taken by workers as opposed to capital has greatly reduced over the last 30/40 years. Unless you are a land-owning, moneyed Tory your well-being will have been affected by this, but perhaps you like being shat upon by the elites..
  10. Well, those of you who work in London would no doubt prefer a strike on a working day, rather than Boxing Day when most travel is non-essential. You don't get paid if you go on strike so it would make sense to pay decent overtime for a day like Boxing Day which no one with family wants to work, since then you'd be losing more money, plus all those short of money would even volunteer..
  11. Well actually, in the big city just an ordinary and cheap mobile will supply the peace of mind of being in contact without worrying about losing an expensive bit of kit. My footie team's changing room was broken into during the first half last Sunday and my first ever (5 month old) smart phone was taken. Mine wasn't too expensive, but one lass had a 600/700 euro iphone taken which she'd only had 2 weeks, plus various others too. Nice to have but I won't be replacing it in a hurry: I don't actually _need_ a smartphone and that's my budget busted for a bit. If I see a good buy I might splash out after Christmas. In terms of provider I find Giff Gaff reasonable value when I'm in the UK. If you want kids to get into computing you'd be far better getting them a Raspberry Pi: smartphones aren't TVs but they are a much more passive form of entertainment. I'm of the age when I'm still surprised at what kids get given, but my first record player and (second-hand) push bike both came very late by today's standards.

  19. Thanks for the picture Kraken. Actually I thought it was obvious that you could almost double up the numbers as Jackanory says, due to the clearly visible shallow step. Presumably people arrange themselves something like this: [if the formatting works..] 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 I'm old enough, although probably not rich enough, to want to sit, with the option of standing when the game gets exciting but I might consider standing if the saving was significant. I've done it often enough before and I'm not decrepit!

  22. The son of some friends of mine in the Southampton area started doing it after a taster course at school and not even being a footballer. Keeping fit and earning good money as a student was the main attraction. Let's face it, it beats minimum wage retail jobs.

Thanks guys for reminding me that I must sort out my ticket for the New Year's Day match, being as it's the only one I can get to over the holidays, what with non-existant public transport and not being able to justify a hire car whilst I'm over. I'll pay what I need for the ticket, although the ticket was probably better value against Exeter a couple of years ago in L1 with the 30000 in the ground! With the possibility of moving back to the UK next year I'd be looking at a very tight budget. If a bigger ground will keep a check on prices I'm all for it. Otherwise I can see myself foregoing the season ticket and spending a few more quid down the nearest Sky equipped pub. That's the danger with the price of football these days, and in the crisis ridden country where I currently live the crowds are pretty poor for _most_ games, even though they're obsessed with football and the tickets are a lot cheaper. I don't see the UK economy being that much better, and the ticket prices are certainly out of kilter with the ones we see in Germany, for example. Apart from that, can we, as suggested above, have a separate thread on attendances, as it's all getting a bit repetitive and tiresome.
