Selles says it's about more than him.... He backs that up.

Yes because promoting Thomas Frank failed miserably for Rasmus Ankerssen at Brentford, he wouldn't do that again...

Chose not to buy them, or were too close to the Profit and sustainability rules threshold.?

But take positives from the negatives.... If NJ hadnt got us deep into the mire, would we have made different player choices? Would we have outlayed the second highest expenditure on Europe in the window? Onuachu, Kamaldeen and Alcaraz

but as FBREF has classed him as a midfielder in the Chelsea match.... let use that tab... Chelsea vs. Southampton Match Report – Saturday February 18, 2023 | FBref.com

I think these stats are more beneficial to be looking at in a 4-2-2-2, the stats you were looking at were for a wide att-mid.

We stick with the same starting 11. Bednarek and Elyounoussi know their roles, unless Orsic or Alcaraz manage to pick up 'playbook automatisms' very quickly we play the majority of the match in the same way.
-
Bednarek (and Elyounoussi) know their roles in the system that's been adapted from Hassenhüttl's playbook. Yes we have better defenders than him, but in knowledge of positioning for not only himself but talking to whoever he's playing centre back with and arguably also relating information to Lavia and AMN, I can see how he got picked yesterday, and how he gets on the team sheet for Leeds.

What Bolx. Rasmus got him from a Danish club. He was always the long term plan (like Thomas Frank at Brentford), but the question was always "is the time right?". The players are on side, a lot of the fans are in side. And you go back and look to see how long it took for Frank to get a decent number of points on the board at Brentford.

Theo, Mara and Armstrong are for pace Arma and Theo especially can be back to help defence and then charge forward.

Bazunu KWP DCC. ABK Peraud JWP. Lavia Edozie Alcaraz. Kamaldeen Onuachu Keep Bazunu in goal for his distribution with better instruction for a back 4. Rotate JWP and Alcaraz. And let a 4231 someone become a 4141. Pace from Edozie and Kamaldeen, Onuachu as the target man.

As whoever does the Saintsextra twitter is too rude to properly credit their source. It's badly paraphrased from this article. https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11700/12812370/ruben-selles-southampton-would-be-happy-for-spaniard-to-take-on-managerial-role-until-end-of-season

A reminder of Selles' team Vs Wednesday. And, frankly thinking, the team that can be put out Saturday will be a world apart.

Press conference is 1pm Friday

If, as the Athletic reports, March was yet to agree compensation with Leeds, him taking the Job will have severely effected the pay off. Any offer from us would have had to mitigate that. That in itself would have made a deal difficult.

Tanswell's Athletic Articles from Last August and Novemeber are worth a read: August: Ruben Selles: Ralph Hasenhuttl’s new No 2 and his ‘special’ journey to the Premier League - The Athletic November Selles’ influence is only growing at Southampton – and the players love it - The Athletic Here is what Jakob Ankerson, said about his time at Aarhus “It was pretty funny because when Ruben came, things just changed,” Ankersen continues. “The club hadn’t won anything in 25 years and it was always an up and down team. But when he came, he started with basic drills. He would work with the back four, teaching them when to push up, when to drop off, and working together in a compact shape. “All this basic shit that people hate to do; but it’s really important. He just did it and didn’t care if these boring drills took 40 minutes or more. It had a really good effect and the tactical changes he installed were the reasons why the two years together were successful, and ended with us finishing in our best position in the 21st century.” But its well worth paying for access to the full articles.

If we go with Selles, I think there is a strong case for getting Beattie in as an assistant. He's had 235 Games alongside a manager on the bench, and he could probably teach a few of our strikers a thing or two about getting the ball into the back of the net.

just done the Statistics (Across all Competitions) : Selles was Thorup's Assistant for 66 Games. (Between 1/1/21 and 30/6/22) W40 (61%) D15 (23%) L11 (16%) Thorup had a further 14 games after Selles came to Saints (Between 1/7/22 and 18/9/22) W5 (36%) D2 (14%) L7 (50%) Thorup had 8 Games at Copenhagen before Selles joined (Between 4/11/20 and 31/12/20) W4 (50%) D1 (12.5%) L3 (37.5%)

Thorup was sacked last year. It's really down to how much the manager want to take on board of his ideas in the end. It sounds as if Hassenhüttl got more insular, and Jones kept him at arms reach.
