I'm sure that the OP is right overall. Why does Cortese want to spend current wage bill on another season in Champ next year when he can spend more now (but less over two years) to gain the cash flow of the Premiership?

Hammond is a considered player and person. That's why he is the captain. He's excellent at that. He also scored a great goal today. Martin Keown had a laugh about it on R5Live... said Cortese looked like a second hand car salesman, but he and the other commentators agreed it sent a strong signal about who was in charge and that was good for Saints.

Exactly why Billy Sharp would have been bad news IMO: "The deal wasn't right for me" etc. i.e. Sharp and his agent just wanted cash up front without proving anything. Far prefer players who want to join for the right reasons.

As I recall, Mark Wright was 21 when he was eased into the CB positions previously filled by the likes of Dave Watson and Chris Nicholl! And he did okay!

Agreed. We need another CB for options but no reason to send him out to an L1 club. He's good enough to play an important role for us IMO.

On the basis Matt Mills is now a £4.5m player, Aaron Martin has every chance to be a very good defender (hopefully for Saints).

The Radio 5Live commentators were saying how great St Mary's was today with the stands packed full of fans wearing red and white stripes. At one point they had difficulty picking out Rickie Lambert because of all the replicas worn by the fans. I liked last season's kit because of the heritage etc (plus no shirt sponsor) as a one-off but I am pleased we are back with what we know and what everyone else knows too! Be great to push for promotion in the old red and white stripes!

Frankly, who's bothered? It's clear Sharp's agent was trying to oversell his player and Cortese wasn't going to play ball. After today's result, there will be players wanting to play for Saints if we make any approaches in any case.
