Long was ready BEFORE the game resumed play. He was on the sideline with his shirt on when Gabbi was down injured and immediately after play resumed they cut to a shot of him stood next to the fourth official.

Absolutely this, the ball before was lofted high in the air and came down bang on the 6 yard line. If that isn't his to claim then what the f*ck is. He doesn't play in DM for Northern Ireland though. I rate Davis, think he has much to offer us in an attacking sense, but he has never, ever performed in defensive midfield for us against all but the worst teams.

Thing is, centrebacks don't usually hit their peak for another 4-5 years, sometimes longer (Fonte, Vidic...). We shouldn't give up on him, and as our season is risk-free right now it's the perfect opportunity to give him top class experience and learn from his mistakes with little real consequence.

He has always been sh*te in defensive midfield, from day one. Much better further forward. Todays performance was no surprise to those of us who are objective.
