40 points has not been needed for the vast majority of a 38 game PL season. Unlikely it will this year either... especially with Cardiff, Brighton and Burnley's fixture lists.
Ralph Hasenhüttl has averaged 1.4 points per game in his 15 Premier League games in charge.
Over 38 games that equals 53 points. Last season that would be enough for 8th place!
Hughes 9 points in 14 games = 0.64 per game. Over 38 games = 25 points
Suggests player quality is not the issue... appointing Pellegrino and Hughes was!
He is a nightmare and barking mad as his dancing suggets. I sat near him for a match and he is constantly shouting profanities at the ref and opposition. When I say constantly I mean constantly it really is a non stop torrent of rubbish.
He has had success stories, these were all signed in his time...
van Dijk
Bednarek
Redmond
Romeu
Hojbjerg
Lemina
Gunn
Vestergaard
Plus numerous academy level signings.
Players will want to join the top 6 regardless of what they hear on international duty. Wages and higher quality football is what attracts them to move, not chats with potential future teammates.
I struggle to see a 33-year-old Billy Sharp being of use to Saints under Hasenhuttl. I'd prefer to see Ings, Redmond, Obafemi and Gallagher as strikers for Saints.

If we continue at the rate of points per game Hasenhuttl has (1.3) then we won't be in the relegation zone at the end of the season. Yesterday was bad... but look at the bigger sample of his 11 games in charge and we have improved a lot and are averaging enough under him to stay up.
Hasenhuttl has been in charge for 11 games and has won 15 points.
An average of 1.3 points per game
That is not relegation form... over a 38 game season it would = 51 points!
