To suggest one player leaving turns Saints from 8th to relegation favourites is madness.
-
Judge him on the appointment of a new manager and the shape of the squad at the end of the summer transfer window. Countless random musing threads before those two things are meaningless.
-
Its being reported as "£4m plus add-ons", we don't know what those add ons are yet so too early to judge. Perhaps it is those add-ons which take it to the earlier reported £9m fee. If those add-ons are likely to happen, then £9m for a 32 year old isn't bad.

Do Lambert or Lallana deserve legend status for FM15? Our survey says... Lambert... Lallana...
-
Have you considered waiting until you know who the new manager is and what players we bring in to replace any that leave? Can you really begrudge Lambert wanting to join Liverpool? He is 32 and this is his last chance of a big move in his career. He'll get a large wage, Champions League football and a fairytale move back to the club he supports after being rejected as a teenager. As long as a fee is agreed it is a move Lambert would never turn down, no matter what Saints did. This is also a terrible phrase... stevy777_x how would you like to be wrongly accused of rape and then someone say "oh, well there is no smoke without fire".
-
From where then?
-
Is it this you are basing it on...? Neil Graham @GBNewYork 1h #saintsfc #BPL #moyes spotted walking around staplewood. Its a rumour by a random Saints fan from New York on Twitter, I think you should think it more likely than not to be a wind up.
-
Signing Dejan Lovren for £8.5m shows what can be done if recruitment is done well. As does... Schneiderlin for £1m Lambert for £1m Clyne for £2m Boruc on a free S.Davis for £400k All clearly bargains at those prices.

Its not the club that is bigging Garcia up in the media, it is most likely his agent talking to the press. I doubt Garcia is being seriously considered by Saints, he hasn't achieved anything of note in his managerial career and the Brighton owner in a recent interview raised a lot of concerns about him.
-
Have you considered a 5 year £3m p/a deal with a bigger club, with a better squad and larger resources would be hard to turn down? You are jumping to conclusions to think that automatically means Saints are lacking in ambition or resources.

I agree.

Because Reed has been effectively Southampton's director of football since April 2010. The club has been extremely successful these past 4 years with him (and others with a football background) giving Cortese footballing advice. I think you and others should give Reed more credit than he currently gets, as he's played an important role in our revival.
-
So we've now gone from an ex-banker with no football background making the final football decisions, to a man who has been in football all his career and was consulted by the previous chairman for football input. Why are you taking issue with that? Reed will be consulting with chief scout Paul Mitchell and the new manager. All three are football people.
-
He's been effectively a director of football from the day he join the club 4 years ago and he's always been on the transfer committee. Cortese didn't have a football background and I would imagine he relied on the input of Reed a lot in the last 4 very successful years.

What are the qualifications required to be a director of football?

Q: What is the time frame? A: There is no date, but we would like to have a long list together as quickly as is healthily possible. The reason is that we would like the new manager to be involved in our player decisions. We have held off on every single coming and going in respect that we have, and Les Reed especially has, for the new manager, that he can put his stamp on the team and influence the process. It’s very important that we, once again I want to use the words, have controlled speed and not haste. We are going 24-7 right now and we hope to have a shortlist out there in the very near future. We are speaking days and not weeks. Q: What can a new manager expect to find at the club with bids in for some of your star players and in terms of transfer funds? A: First of all it’s very clear that we are in control. We are in control of all the player transfers. All the top players are under long term contracts. Any transfers that take place will be under our terms. We will decide the terms to potential transfers in and out of the club. We will involve the manager. That is important for everybody to know. That’s why we have been able to not agree to any transfers to date, because we have control of the situation, and anybody who is saying anything else doesn’t understand that we are in a strong position with the Saints.

In every club one person has to make the final decision, but as angelman said above he has a large team helping him and giving an input. The chief scout Paul Mitchell for example will have a big say in player recruitment.
-
I doubt we will keep the star players of Lallana and Shaw, possibly a few others swell. What is key is how they are replaced, the managerial appointment will give us a good idea where we are going.
-
You sound as if you are happy with that. Are you? Will you give him enough time? Lets say before the World Cup for a new manager and the beginning of September to get the squad fully sorted. If so, please promise not to start endless negative threads throughout the rest of the summer like you do every year.
