Things could be worse - your memories of 2007-2009
saintrich replied to whizzpop's topic in The Saints
Blackpool away in 2008. Pompey beat man utd in the fa cup and when we got in to blackpool it was absolutely hammering down with rain. Uncovered temporary stand that was swaying when Vignal smacked in a penalty. -

Cortese speaking to BBC for first time since leaving Saints

The rest of the Cortese interview being put up on the BBC site later on. -
If we sold Lovren for £20m, could probably get two of: Davide Astori, Steven Caulker and Cheikhou Kouyate (any other realistic centre back suggestions, anyone?) and still have a little bit of change left over. Or we could just keep Lovren and sign one of those...

Suarez drags defenders all over the place which allows Sturridge extra space.
-
I was going to suggest Ricardo Rodriguez as a replacement for Luke Shaw, but didn't realise just how highly rated he was - a quick google search sees him linked with most of the top clubs in Europe. Unrealistic? Seen Berahino linked with Newcastle today, wouldn't mind signing him to compete with J-rod in a wide forward role.

The high for me was the run of Saturday away games we had towards the end of the league one promotion season - Bournemouth, Leyton Orient, Brighton, Brentford and Plymouth. Got the train to the first four and passenger in car for the last - all easy journeys, top days out, plenty of booze and won all five.
-
Yeah, signing Vydra and Deeney would be a real statement of intent...
-
Would be a good signing for a couple of years, while we try to develop Targett.
-
Fancy us to get a goal or two with Stones and Alcaraz at centre back for them. Score draw.

I thought Kim looked ok - he made a good counter attacking run in the first half, but none of his team mates could catch up with him where they were playing so defensive. Reither and Yanga-Mbiwa are the two worst players I've seen at St Mary's this season and both were hauled off at half time if I remember correctly.
-
if ramirez goes, Holtby would be a good replacement.
-
The amount of times I hear him referred to as 'underrated' would not make him underrated at all. Everyone knows he is a good part of our team.

There is always a large row of empty seats in the itchen north that about 6 or 7 ticket office staff come up and sit in for half the game too.

I think we'll sell Shaw and Osvaldo. Schneiderlin and Clyne may be tempted to move on for International recognition and First team football respectively but I doubt we'd be interested in selling. It would be good if we could get Domenico Berardi as part of the deal of selling Osvaldo to Juventus. But I suspect they'd rather keep Berardi and not even sign Osvaldo permanently. Doesn't look like Ogbonna is a regular starter for Juventus also. Maybe we could sign Gary Hooper in a cut price deal if Norwich went down - wouldn't sign him if they stayed up though, wouldn't be value for money. Anyone spied any decent left backs if we let Shaw go?
-
I don't see how top players from clubs not that far ahead and below us in the table are going to sign for us - Players like Bony and Hernandez are not going to leave their clubs for us - Bony could play for someone like Arsenal and Hernandez maybe Spurs, while Remy will go permanently to Newcastle and Lukaku wouldn't join us in a million years. It would be like Swansea or Newcastle fans saying they should sign Lallana or Rodriguez... we would all find it hilarious on here.

I know this is 'pick what you think', but Hodgson already practically said last week that he wouldn't take Clyne or Chambers to the World cup, as Clyne hasn't started enough and he wouldn't think about picking someone from the U18 squad at this time with regard to Chambers. For me It will be just Lallana, with one or both of Rodriguez or Lambert making the 30, but being cut when it comes to the 23. Possibly Shaw if Roy didn't take Cole, but a big if.

The squad is difficult is to pick and some of the 'dead certs' seem to have picked up more than one injury this season - Wilshere and Johnson currently injured Jones and Smalling both went off injured for Man Utd on Saturday and have both been injured previously this season... The telegraph have a good page where you can pick the squad: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/world-cup/10497297/World-Cup-2014-England-Squad-Selector-pick-your-23-then-compare-to-our-choices.html Of their available options I think you can completely dis-regard: Green, Butland, Bertrand, Gibbs, Lescott, Terry, Shawcross, Jenkinson, Ferdinand, Caulker, Richards, Downing, Huddlestone, Ince, Morrison, Rodwell, Shelvey, Ward-Prowse, Agbonlahor, Berahino, Young, Walcott. Very outside chance as it stands: Cleverley, Lennon, Defoe, Zaha. Goalkeepers: - nothing much to say here Hart, Foster Ruddy/Forster - fighting out for third spot. Defenders: - The final 8 seem pretty certain, but could we risk going just 7 defenders? Who is back up if one of the centre backs get injured? Walker Johnson (Clyne in competition for this spot, or Roy may pick 7 defenders and Use Smalling as both CB and RB cover) Cahill Jagielka Baines Jones Smalling (Not sure what we do if one of the nailed on 4 CB get's/stays injured, I guess Dawson would be next in line...*shudders*) Cole (Shaw in competition for this spot, if he decides Cole isn't getting enough game time in the league, in which case Baines promoted to first choice) Midfielders: - by far the most competition here Carrick (Barry as back up, not a great option, but has been playing well, would be suprised to see both get picked) Gerrard Lampard (A lot of people seem to think he won't get picked, but I don't think Roy has the ******** to do that - Henderson has been playing well and could step in) Oxlade Chamberlain (Townsend could fight for this position, is there room for both?) Wilshere (again, Henderson could take this place if Wilshere injured) Lallana (Adam Johnson back up) Barkley Milner (Townsend could take this position quite easily, but I can't see Roy dropping Milner) Up front: Rooney Sturridge Welbeck (Rodriguez back up) Lambert/Carroll fighting out for a position who knows the winner Personally I'd take just 7 defenders and make a space for one of my mentioned back-up midfielders or attackers, but think Roy will take 8.

I was hoping to stop for a few drinks at Waterloo, do you think this won't be possible? There aren't any times etc on tickets, so don't see why not.

Lambert smokes doesn't he? or at least I read on here that he did.

I think people were singing 'England's number one' to Kelvin My favourite goal in that game was Andrew Davies bouncing off Akpo Sodje like he'd ran into a brick wall. RE: Amazing how players drop down the leagues. I remember telling a few pompey supporting lecturers at college that Lucien Mettomo was going to save our season - there was a golden comment from benthelegend somewhere on him.

The way we failed to replace Bale, Claus and Baird after the 06/07 season and brought in Bennett (him and Makin CB against Palace, christ) and Spending £1.2m which seemed to be most of our budget on Wayne Thomas too, when we needed more than one defensive reinforment and then getting in on loan Ifil, Dailly etc, playing Wright at right back, Skacel at left back was truly woeful. Completely went for it in 06 and failed. I remember getting a letter through the post on a Friday, saying that as I had been to Preston away (L 5-1) and Sheff Wed (L 5-0) I could have a free ticket to Cardiff away - the next day went to Hull away and we Lost 5-0 hahaha... going to have nightmares tonight.
-
I remember him scoring at home to QPR, deflected effort - same game that Davis got tackled by Ray Jones trying to shield the ball out for a goal kick. Who was he keeping out of the side when he was playing right back? I seem to remember we had Phil Ifil playing right back a few games in 07/08 too... did Ostlund really get that bad or did he get injured? Need my memory refreshing...
