Heaven forbid that racism should be frowned upon It is a very drastic conclusion to say that black people are inherently criminal though, how should the colour of your skin dictate your criminality? I would attribute it more to social factors like deprivation, poverty etc. rather than skin colour. Crime levels are high right across the board of ethnicities in high-deprivation areas such as the areas where these riots are taking place.

That's what I thought, was hoping he could elaborate on that particular point though... quite a drastic conclusion to draw.

Obviously your social worker mate (and you by proxy) do know about the black youth culture in the UK. Do you not think that's you're perhaps over-simplifying the mindset of a young black man in today's society by saying that they all revel in the "big man" image? Why is this more prevalent in black youth culture than in white youth culture? Is this a biological or a social/cultural thing?

Heard sirens constantly for the past 20-30 minutes in SO17, might have a wander up to Burgess Road and see what's going on. Sounds like that's where it's coming from.

Do you have direct experience of being an underprivileged black youth in a white country? Not taking anything away from your upbringing, it must have been difficult, but admit that there is a difference between a white man in that situation and a black man in that situation.

Er, no they don't. - Living below the poverty line - Poorer quality of schools - Less jobs, therefore less disposable income for books etc. - More discrimination from police etc. I'm lucky in that i'll never have to experience growing up as an ethnic minority on a council estate in a city. I'd be very surprised if anyone on this forum experienced that as well.

No, he's right. They are disproportionately involved in crime, but they are also disproportionately targetted by police. The reason for the higher amount of crime amongst black people is that they mostly live in high-deprivation areas, meaning that crime is a way of subsistence. Put white people, asian people, dogs, martians, whatever in those circumstances with no jobs and no opportunities in life, and what do you think will happen? The fact that innocent black people (as well as those of other minorities) are targetted just because of their race is disgusting though.
