We score a poo result, and thankfully West Ham also pull out a poo result. We must keep up the home form though. Lambert and Chaplow being out, arguably our two best players this season, show the fragility of the squad attacking-wise, but we should still hope the players fielded do their bit too. I'm not too disheartened, surprisingly as we lost to the bottom side at the start of the day, but it does highlight the need to sign a striker in the January window. Guly is a good player, but is better playing off a striker, something we lacked in the starting XI. De Ridder will come good, but needs time. Get December over with as many points as we can achieve, and let's see what we can conjure up in the window. We'll relinquish top eventually, but I hope we can keep an auto spot for ourselves for as long as possible. (I thought Bristol City were going to do us a favour today, but hey ho.)

Beattie? No thanks. Adkins should've heeded my advice in January, and signed a less well known, cheaper Jordan Rhodes from Huddersfield. We'll regret that one. Blips will come along, I have no doubt Adkins is looking for a striker in the January window.

It's also not necessarily about the points Saints get, but how much our rivals slip up. West Ham will push us all the way (or vice versa), but it'd do us a great favour if Leicester, Boro, Birmingham, Cardiff and whoever else drop silly points.

Based on our League position? No. There's more important things to concentrate on. Palace have different aims to us this season - and besides, they'll only get tonked in the final if they make it that far anyway. The FA Cup - that's a different kettle of fish, but not the League Cup. Next season, if we make it back to the Premiership, then give it a crack. The League Cup does need re-vamping though - God knows how, but most managers use it as a chance to blood squad players or youth. Perhaps a better reward at the end of it or better financial incentives.

I worry a bit about the latter part of the season, but then I think of the January transfer window and it makes me feel all right. I'd be VERY surprised if we didn't strengthen, especially given our lofty position and prospective draw for players.

There's also no guarantee that Rickie and Fonte would have constituted a win, nor that our result would have been anything like Palace's had we eventually got through. Stop beating yourself up over it, none of us really care about the Carling Cup - when you're in first place in the League, the main priority has to be promotion.

A great talent although his goalscoring needs work - but he's destined for big things. Bristol City bleat on about Maynard 'only joining a Premiership team' but he's far more realistic a signing for us. I like Zaha though, better than Victor Moses, although both are exciting to watch.
