Smartphone zombies. Walk towards you and then when you stop in front of them suddenly look up and wonder where they are. There should be a special lane for them. Preferably down the middle of the road.

On the other side... I have met a couple of Americans in international cruises who have benefited on separate occasions from the NHS. Both were expecting and fully prepared to pay for their treatment but in all cases payment was refused. They were very impressed. I was at a company on an industrial estate in Atlanta one evening and one of the cleaners suddenly felt ill. The paramedics were called out and would not take him to hospital until he positively confirmed that he wanted to go and they were satisfied that his cleaning company would pay. Our Canadian colleagues said that in Canada they would take you to hospital by default unless you signed a waiver otherwise. Incidentally the American paramedics were enormous, each was the size of a pickup truck.

Any agent worth his fees would make sure that every available avenue was explored before signing off the deal.

Middle lane joggers turn a three-lane motorway into a two-lane motorway. They should be pulled over and summarily executed (without blocking the hard shoulder, obviously)

True, but how many speedometers are accurate? The police view is that it is not the job of the individual to police the motorway. In any case motorways only operate properly if everybody keeps to the left and if there is a variation of speeds otherwise bunching occurs which is dangerous. The speed limit is set at 70 in the full knowledge that speeds between 70 and 80 are common. There is speeding and there is dangerous driving which are not necessarily the same thing.

Cameron was not in a position to offer that promise nor to implement it, as we have found out. It was most likely unconstitutional too. It was for Parliament to decide on the outcome, not ‘the People’, whoever they were.

Ridiculous penalty. Bounced off his chest. Welcome to the future of soccer ball. Let’s all just try to kick the ball against somebody’s arm and see who wins on penalties. Oh well, I suppose we shall be having the penalty shootout at the start of the game instead of after extra time.

My neighbour at SMS said that he had written to the club and that their reply sas that they would be looking into it over the summer. His view was that attacking towards their own fans in the second half gave visiting teams a significant advantage.

"proper fans"? Any fan is a proper fan. And no drums please, God no! You don't create atmosphere by making a lot of noise, you drown it out.

Theresa May and the death of the Tory Party

Yeah, that's ********. It isn't a rebate in any sense of the word. We don't hand over money and then get some given back. We only ever pay the reduced amount. A better term is 'discount' although 'abatement' or 'correction' are equally as good. Politicians like the term 'rebate' because it makes it look as if we're getting something back, but we don't. However it's referred to it is definitely not true that "We send the EU £350million a week" http://www.europarl.europa.eu/thinktank/en/document.html?reference=EPRS_BRI(2016)577973 -

There is no rebate. We pay an agreed reduced amount which is a lot less thatn £350m per week. Still a lot of money but more than offset by the extra government revenues that arise from our membership of the Single Market. -

There is no such place as ‘Oxbridge’ -
Did it have the words "Bird Feeder" written on the outside of the box in big letters?

I am reminded of Oscar Wilde: "One must have a heart of stone to read the death of little Nell without laughing.”
