Thanks for posting that and I absolutely agree with your comments. I too watched `Earth`s Greatest Spectacles` and was captivated not only by the `story` of Svalbard`s year but also by the hugely impressive photography - I`m already looking forward to the rest of the series.

Just started reading Richie Benaud`s Autobiography. Marvellous.!

Very chilling indeed. I remember visiting Belsen whilst I was doing my National Service in Germany in the early `60s; we were told that birds never ever sang or flew over the site of the concentration camp there....and it was true.

Just read `Epilogue` by Will Boast - a compelling life story of a Southampton lad brought up in Michigan among an `interesting` family - one, I suspect, which may not be uncommon. He made some journeys to and from the USA back to Southampton, Salisbury and Brighton in pursuit of family history and mystery and gives descriptions of attending a Saints v Brighton game and joining in the Saints` chants - you know what they were - and also mentions that his parents met whilst working at the Dreamland electric blanket factory in Hythe.

As one `of that era` I was very sorry to hear of Tommy`s passing. Trouble is, these days it happens too often.

Can`t see it happening myself, to be fair.

I like the cut of his jib - seems to have an affinity with the beautiful south, so he`ll feel at home with us. Wish him well.

Thanks for that. I `taped` it last night and will watch it when I can. I always enjoy Anthony Hopkins` films - right back to `International Velvet,` which introduced me to the glories of the Flete Estate in south Devon as a result of which we`ve `holdayed` there lots of times since first seeing that film one Boxing Day afternoon. Btw - I guess people don`t `tape` things any more....but you know what I mean.

Just seen `Tunes of Glory` on Talking Pictures - one of the best `military` dramas ever made, capturing the reality of the politics of the officers` mess in an infantry batallion. Starred the late John Mills, the late Alec Guinness, the late Denis Price, the late Gordon Jackson.....most of the rest of the splendid cast are probably also late as well, although it was Susannah York`s first film. But then it was made in 1960, the same year I was called up to do my National Service which is probably why I identified with it so much.

I thought it was illegal to read the Daily Mail

Sat through Archipelago on BBC late Thursday night. I waited for nearly two hours for something to happen but it never did. Has to be the most turgid film ever made but I enjoyed the scenery - it was filmed on Tresco on the Scillies and took me back to an enchanting visit there too many years ago.

Absolutely correct.

Has Virgil van Dijk been the best signing in the Premier League?
Snopper replied to steve55's topic in The Saints
Possibly. -
I thought it was just me! Thank goodness for at least one other convert. I`ve heard the Davrath version and also Dame Kiri`s. No problem with either but there`s just something about the Upshaw and Kent Nagaro one that makes it special for me. Maybe because the first time I heard it was on Classic FM about 10 years ago driving home to Kent from a depressing defeat at SMS.

My long drive was made bearable by the entire version of Cantaloube`s Songs of the Auvergne sung beautifully by Dawn Upshaw. Magic.

Can we have that in writing please?

I`d take a point, tbf.

I`ve been watching Talking Pictures - Sky Channel 343 - they show only old films, most of them black and white. Quite fascinating - those were the days when films had stories and ham acting, to the extent that when they are being `serious,` it`s really rather funny, engagingly so.

Thank God we got the right Dutchman. Van Gaal seems a prize tit and does nothing for the image or reputation of the club he `manages.` Oh, hang on a minute - maybe they deserve each other.

I thought last night was encouraging as an exercise in pursuing the club policy of more `openness` with the fans. Whilst the club can`t be blamed for the quality of questions I thought their responses were as honest as they could be. As this was the first of, I hope, many then I`m sure both the club and the fans will learn from last night`s experience and future forums should therefore be more `satisfying.` Adam Blackmore was excellent, so too were Les and Ronald. Not too sure about Ralph and his platitudes and I wonder whether Gareth Rogers might have been more `helpful.` All in all, thought, an enjoyable and encouraging evening.

Rather a lot of it I suspect.....

OUT!! We`re certainly not getting value for our £58million a day membership fee and we`re quite capable of standing our own ground in economic terms. Interesting that Lord Stuart Rose has been appointed to head up the Stay In campaign and his colleagues mostly seem to be business leaders and therefore their main concern is for the trade and industrial well-being of the country. Fair enough but for me at least it`s all about sovereignty and the ability to determine our own future as a sovereign nation. If we get out of Europe and find problems as a result, then at least they will be problems of our own making, which we`re more than capable of solving. Just hope the Leave campaign gets its act together.
