Poor. We just look a bit lightweight. I can accept there are many midfield destroyer type players like Wanyama about, but we are weaker without him. I was never a massive fan of Pelle, but thought we might bring in a similar type player. Maybe Austin, just needs a good run of games; he seems to have been largely written off by most on here. The squad to me looks weaker than last year and it's hard to argue against that assessment. I was hoping we might shift on Yoshida and JWP but it looks like they might be here a while. What's most disappointing is we made our sales early, then only brought in Hojberg and Redmond and the two back up signings. Boufal looks exciting, but it seems to me Les put his eggs in one basket and spent a lot of time trying to get it over the line, and perhaps missing out on other targets. I guess it's just been a bit underwhelming. I know we are trying to be a sustainable business, and accept we are never going to make the Bony/Benteke sort of signings. But winning the net spend table wins you no trophies or points. Les just needs to quit the CL and ambition talks, because we haven't shown any signs of wanting to improve on next season. We worked hard to finish where we did. In my 25 years of following Saints we've had the one tie against Steaua and then last season's disaster against Midgetland. I am massively excited about the Europa league, the Prem can take a backseat this year if we take the EL seriously. What's the point in finishing 7th and then not going for it? May as well finish 17th with that attitude.The kids can be used in the League Cup. Really looking forward to the draw, looks to be some stronger sides than usual in it to me, but maybe I'm just nervous about the draw. It's not an excuse, it's the way it is. The top clubs only buy the ready made players. We do not have the power or financial clout to sign £30 million players. And in fairness, we have a good track record of signing players of quality in a lower price bracket. We just unfortunately sell them. It isn't so easy to just find replacements for the likes of Mane and Wanyama; they are quality players which is why we sell them to the bigger teams. We can only hope the black box is still working to help bring in someone. There aren't many players like Wanyama about, nor Mane. Bolasie is over rated. Too much hype, not a lot of end product. He seemed to come to prominence after making a fool of Lovren in a game a couple of seasons ago now. May be exciting at times, but way more inconsistent than Mane. 13 assists and 10 goals over 3 seasons for Palace. Mane 21 goals and 9 assists, despite going missing for 5 months last season.Very poor at Bristol City too. Would rather go for Burke, have watched him a couple of times, looks very dangerous, albeit in a lower league. Just the sort of player we can develop (and then sell to Liverpool. We started poorly last season, what was it, 4 points from first five games? We went into the WBA/watford games in early 2016 with about 20 points, and a lot of relegation chat. I do feel we look a bit toothless in attack, we will have to wait until the end of the window for something to happen. Nice in possesion but you just felt we were never going to score. We really need another creative outlet. Long had a great chance in the first half, but it was a **** poor finish. 12th place minimum combined with any of the following; league cup final, FA cup semi final or Europa quarter final. Everton finished around 11th a couple of seasons ago but had a good Europa run and played their strongest team on thursdays. We're essentially just a improved and easy to use, but slightly more expensive, version of the black box for the top 6. Les has openly described us as a 'showcase' club and seems proud of that fact. I just struggle to understand how he can mention ambitions of Champions League football at the same time. Whilst we are moaning about all the players wanting out, what about those who are signing the contracts? Is it purely for improved wages, or maybe ambition, or maybe a promise that they can leave if a big club comes knocking at the door? Yoshida is simply not good enough at this level. Who could we bring in to replace Fonte at this stage? No one good enough in my opinion. I'm a bit concerned now; our squad on 1 September is going to be significantly weaker than last year. I am happy to give Puel time; he is getting unfair stick because he's not a big name and not much of a character. Fonte is such a presence on and off the pitch, worrying times. I think we all knew the Tadic contract was going to happen. With all the talk and ITK posts going on , it was a bit disappointing nothing materialised. However, the squad is in reasonable shape for our first few games, we really should be winning tomorrow. I have faith we still have a couple lined up, and although we won't perform as well in the league, I'm absolutely buzzing for the Europa League, and hope we take it seriously.
