So. Did anyone have a bet on for a Saints Promotion/Pompey Relegation double this season?

This is better than normal service for me. I've never known us two leagues above them before.

Oh I don't doubt that you thought that was where we'd finish when you predicted it at the start of the season. Like I said, I wouldn't have bet anything I couldn't afford to lose against it happening at the start of the season. It was when you were still carrying on predicting it when we'd have had to lose every single game for it to be possible that you were being ironic with it (I hope!)

To revel in the achievement. To realise how it might not have happened, so that we can enjoy the fact that it DID happen even more.

Yeah, it was pretty clear he was just carrying on ironically after a while To be honest, I wouldn't have bet against a 17th finish with any meaningful stakes right at the start of the season.

See, this is why this thread was a good idea! I'd completely forgotten about how close we were to losing the Millwall game...

Oh of course none of it matters. It's just that I'm used to thinking how if it'd been different we might have succeeded instead of failing... (eg that last minute shot that was cleared off the line against Arsenal in the FA Cup final...) It's nice to look back from the other side of the fence for once.

Looking back, with football, results can fall one way or the other on a knife edge. Leeds is the one that comes to mind immediately. Without that world class goalkeeping masterclass, we might be looking at a playoff lottery right now. West Ham have thrown away so many points by drawing games they've dominated. Thinking about it, we've face serious challenges for the top spots from Cardiff, Middlesborough, Birmingham... there must be moments in their seasons where it all went wrong. Then again, we've missed out on the title by a single point. You think back recently to that 40-50 pass move that we didn't finish off against Middlesborough that would have made it 2-0, or even the late equaliser Pompey got against us... What are the moments that stick in other people's mind this season?

Single handedly turned the game round for us today... I was sat there very nervously until that fantastic run of his set up the first goal, and then he made that fantastic diving header for the second.

Reckon we'll come 2nd based on recent league finishes...
