  1. The West Indies had taken a beating at the hands of Lilliee & Thomson a couple of years before and Clive Lloyd saw that this was the way forward . Tony Gregg then went and wound them up saying he was going to make them grovel . The fact that a white South Africian used that particular phrase compounded the resentment . I've got a great book about that tour and the I'll feeling that Gregg created called "Grovel" . Fantastic read for any cricket fans of a certain vintage . Close & Edrich both took a hammering and were extremely brave , and in fairness so was Gregg himself. I highly recommend the book if you're interested in cricket . RIP Brian
  2. Because he's shiete . A complete and utter waste of money and anyone who doesn't think that is deluded or related to him .
  3. I don't think Maggie kept her " dogma" well hidden , I think she used the shambles on the left to become more radical than she ever thought possible in '79. Had labour stayed together under Owen or Healy I'm sure she would have governed more from the centre, and not been so radical. This is a great opportunity for Call me Dave to do the same , but I doubt he will. He take the Blair approach which is to use the weakness of his opponent's to pinch the centre ground , to attract their " soft" voters. It may win elections, as Blair did, but ultimately you end up disappointed.
  4. Two major pillars of the eu are The Euro and Schengen , both have shown to be totally unworkable as soon as they're put under any stress . The EU is a flawed ideological idea and the sooner it is broken up , the better.
  5. This is why the people comparing his election as leader with Maggie's are deluding themselves. Thatcher won the support of her MPs and had previously had front bench positions. Jezza was gerrymandered onto the ballot , has been disloyal over and over again and people are queuing up to resign from his shadow cabinet . If people are going to compare a Tory leadership election to this one it is IDS. Although he had the support of a majority of MPs , his previous rebellions ( every bit as principled as Jezzas ) meant the whips had real problems keeping discipline and he was knifed pretty quickly. I was listening to a programme on radio 4 about the '76 leadership election. Roy Jenkins, Callaghan, Tony Benn, Michael Foot, Denis Healy and Tony crossland . Contrast these big figures with Burnham & Kendall, Jezza and Mrs Balls. Where were David Blunkett, Alister Darling , Harriet Harman , Ken Livingstone Alan Johnson . These are the type of people that should still be MPs and still hold senior positions. Why are both parties obsessed with youth and " new" . The greatest thing about this win is that Diane Flabbert will get a front bench position and we won't have to put up with the racist on the "This Week" sofa anymore.
  6. Any point away is OK, particularly if its a 0-0. VvD looked a different class than everybody else, yes they'll be harder games but if he plays like that it'll be Toby who? By the end of the season. Poor judgement from Targett , 9 out of 10 players would have waited for the contact , which you could see coming a mile off. He got lucky that the guy dived too early. But it was still a horrendous misjudgement. He is not ready yet and its one of the fine lines that are costing us. He got into a couple of decent overlap positions , but hasn't the quality RB has. JRod a couple of heavy touches and a poor header and JWP wasted a good Pelle chest down with a really poor touch. Juanmi is a strange one , I hope its a question of Ron easing him in, rather than a buy that Ron didn't really want. I see no reason why he couldn't of had 10 yesterday . I saw nothing wrong with singing to Rickie , it was a couple of minutes when he first came off.
  7. Well we tried him out ,as did Hull .
  8. That is correct . I remember it well , because I was listening to the radio when Vickery said it . He also said he's international career was over hyped . I don't get it , he's proven to be a complete and utter failure , yet people still won't accept it. Let's tick them off , because they'll appear in the next 20 posts . " The Villa game " " clearly talented" " not suited to the premier league " " could do it in Italy or Spain " " injury free" Eyes down for Gaston bingo .
  9. Perhaps it's because he's shiete
  10. The ira also took into account public opinion , particularly in the republic and the US . I'm sure the slight change in American public opinion towards terrorism had some influence on Adams and co " settling" . Remember , the IRA used to give " warnings " and used to attempt to minimise civilian vauslities as they knew these would turn decent Catholics against them . Isis are totally different , they're loons pure and simple
  11. The membership would never vote for anyone anywhere near Milliband D 's politics . That's the problem with opening up the debate , the party has a majority of lefties . At least the Tories only give the members 2 options , so if enough mp's are sensible they'll get a choice of 2 " centralist " clones . Admirable as it is , when you start giving the party too much say you're in trouble .
  12. The ira had specific and understandable aims that could be part of negotiations. I doubt Isis' aims of death to all infidels and the destruction of the west, are the basis of any negotiation.
  13. Complete and utter rubbish . Republicans are not vocal , there's hardly any debate and nobody is pretending it's anything other than a small minority . It is not anything to do with jealously at all . Despite being a minority position it is a consistent argument . Arguing against hereditary peers , for equality and against the class system whilst doffing your caps to The Royals is not . 100 years ago most people believed we were descended from Adam & Eve , 50 years ago we locked up homosexuals . One day every man & women will be born equally in this country , a Muslim or catholic could attain head of state . I doubt I'll be around to see it , but you're deluded if you think this backward looking institution will last .
  14. Nobody would claim that Graham Gooch was a better batsmen than Don Bradman just because he scored more test runs .
  15. No they couldn't .
  16. What a terribly modern idea.
  17. Eddie Howe
  18. This was the very same argument used by people against reforming the lords . 2015 and we still have people believing in a class system , where people are born to rule, where certain " qualities" are more likely in the ruling classes.
  19. So the Lords need to be elected , but not the Head of State. Are there any other jobs that you're OK being passed down to your children? Lord mayor of London, Southampton Manager , head of BBC ? Is there another job in the civil service that forbids Muslims & Catholic's from doing it ? Whether she is neutral, corruptible or immune to lobbyists is totally irrelevant. She's got the gig regardless of her behaviour, so has Charlie boy and so has Good old Willie . Still, at least you know who you're doffing your cap to for a few more years.
  20. So provided the monarch is popular and respected it's a good idea. What if Charles is a plum , how do we get rid of him ?
  21. That because she's a good civil servant , her son should get her job when she pegs it?
  22. It doesn't make a blind bit of difference. What are you saying , that because she's a good civil servant the monarchy is a good thing . What if she was like Charlie Manson , would that make it a bad thing ? Her ability to do the job is irrelevant , she only got it because of who her father was , I thought we were trying to get away from that sort of thing .
  23. Thank god you aren't the one making the decisions , you don't even have the knackers to tell your mrs to cook her own food .
  24. Spot on.
  25. I thought it was reasonable what the ref did, although slightly unusual .Most refs would have bottled it and just booked the second challenge . I don't know if in the strictest sense of the laws the ref was right , I guess we'll have to wait for any appeal, but Baird was in the wrong and it was his fault not the refs. The commentary and experts were pretty biased , Lafferty clearly deserved a yellow and the dopey looking fullback pulled the winger back when there was no need. What made me laugh was Gerry Armstrong was praising the ref, until he gave decisions against NI. I thought the ref was pretty good myself.
