**** it, I celebrate when one group of highly paid employees kick a football into a net more than another group of highly paid employees, just because they're employed in an area relatively close to where I was born. I'll celebrate any old ****.

It's pretty interesting to see that while we love the football club, and people generally seem pleased to have grown up in the area, there's very little love on here for the actual city of Southampton. it seems nearly everybody who has lived in Southampton, but now lives in another place, prefers other places. It doesn't seem to be an actual dislike of Southampton either, few people here have bad things to say about it, it's just that once you've moved away and seen a bit more, the city doesn't really have much to lure you back. Bournemouth, Winchester and the New Forest seem to be the more attractive things in the region. To be honest, I've been over with my kids during the summer holidays the last few years and we've visited all of those places and pretty much stayed out of Southampton. But then, as I've said before, I'm not a big fan of cities anyway.

Not clear at all. I think he'll still be at saints next season and haven't seen anything at all that's made me think otherwise.

Doesn't really make a difference to anything I said, does it? A new story with new characters could still be set in the same background.

True Detective's disappointing (for me) ending means that it won't be taking its place up there with the greats, in fact I think it'll be mostly forgotten in a few years unless they do a killer follow up series. Spoilers: It was just a bloke then, the type of deranged, abused, in-bred redneck freak we've seen many times. Carcosa and the yellow king really weren't any kind of revelation and they were a bit token in that final episode. The high level involvement with the Tuttles and Childress's gives room for further series, but they were just background stuff in how it played out. As with how a lot of dark thrillers with hints of supernatural go, it's a lot more interesting and alluring when it's just hints and shadows, when they have to deal with what's really happening, it's often either disappointing and banal if it's not supernatural, or silly and annoying if it is. Great acting all-round though

Same as most it seems, I wouldn't move back to Southampton. I'm pretty sure I'm here for life now, but if I were to move to the UK, it might be Hampshire, but not Southampton. Thing is, I wouldn't want to live in any city, so it's not that specific to Southampton. I think if I managed to drag the wife over, the only place she loves in the UK is the Lake District. She recently had to go to Hull on business and described it as the worst place she has ever been to in her life. And she's been to Birmingham.

Why do people talk as if getting lots of money for a player guarantees that the club will improve to the tune of that amount? If we have Luke Shaw, we theoretically have a 30m left back. If we sell him, we have one or two players that we find that cost that much and will sign for us, if it's all reinvested. Sometimes transfers work out, sometimes they don't. If we sell him and get in an Osvaldo and a Ramirez, then we have improved to the tune of one decent substitute. And that's not just a comment that damns our ability to spend well. That's how it is for all clubs, we just notice it more for our club. For every decent player United sign, they spend loads on players that don't really work out, like Berbatov, Veron, Taibi, Saha, Forlan etc. However much we spend on transfers, we should expect that about half of that spending won't work out. If you want to do well, you're far better off keeping hold of the player that you know can do the job well if you can, even if the price you're being offered seems inflated.

Not entirely sure which opinions you're reacting to here. I haven't seen any comments on this thread suggesting he needs a football background. I thought it was Barry's job to over-react to non-existent posts.

British soldiers not allowed to train if it's cold
norwaysaint replied to norwaysaint's topic in The Lounge
Yeah, got that bit wrong. I've done quite a bit of cross country in the minus twenties and as you say, no problem at all until you stop for a break. Still, with proper kit it shouldn't be a problem and as was mentioned, all of the other countries involved were still active. -
Lots of my students laughing about this story that was on the news. British soldiers banned from training if it goes below -4C. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/arctic-circle-cold-british-military-train-article-1.1703590 http://www.thelocal.no/20140226/british-troops That is pretty poor, not exactly enhancing our military reputation.

It's annoying we could never convince Bournemouth to scrap their sell on fee in return for being given Tommy Forecast. Who would be silly enough to do a thing like that though?

Teams getting relegated from the PL and potential signings
norwaysaint replied to doddisalegend's topic in The Saints
Surely only one player we can't miss out on... van Wolfswinkel would be an "amazing" signing, possibly the "buy of the season". If we got him we would have got one striker good enough to get us into Europe assured. -
I don't know what happened to that post. One, two and hoping, obviously. norwegian auto correct

Because you couldn't reasonably hope for noe top club to have a disastrous string of results, but hopping for WTO is pushing it? 8th is what we should be hopping for.

In 83-84 we beat 7 teams away.

You've just linked to an article that quotes Poccetino saying there are problems with the Europa League and that he refuses to contemplate getting into the Champions' League any time soon. I'd agree with him there, you're right, his comments are very balanced.
-
Top two threads on the board are that it's inevitable that MP is leaving and that we're apparently going to sell our academy players. Got to love this place and it's calm, balanced posters.

I've been quite impressed with those films, never read the books. The influences are pretty obvious and there's little original, but it still works well and the lead actress carries the series very well. They were saying on the radio 5 film show that the last book was by far the least enjoyable and that they were surprised it was being made into two films.

My satellite dish (used for UK channels) got nudged out of position in a storm four weeks ago and I still haven't bothered with the three minute job of realigning it. I just don't bother with broadcast TV at all nowadays, it has just lost its attraction. For decent programs, I use iplayer (or local equivalents) or netflix. I use the radio (streamed through tune-in radio) or internet for news. I'm in my forties and if watching TV while it's broadcast seems like a dated concept to me, then the medium really must be dying. I'm a big fan of the BBC and effectively closing their trashiest branch seems like a wise move to me.
-
Would Media Hint help with this? It's an extension for Chrome or Firefox that we use to make iPlayer work and it also changes our Netflix so we can access stuff only meant for the US. i don't know how it works, but it's by far the most effortless version of these things that I've used, you just add it to Chrome and never have to think about it again. It'll certainly get you iPlayer, don't know about Sky.

Why is it inevitable? I've seen lots of comments to that effect, but they all seem to be based on nothing in particular. I think he'll be with us next season. His stock is on the rise, but it would wane if he left us after a year, without making any real achievement.
-
I don't think anyone major will leave and I don't think MP will leave either. People on here seem certain, but people on here always run with rumour as fact if it's repeated often enough. I just haven't seen the evidence to draw those conclusions. I think MP knows his stock has risen while he's been here and he'll be keen to let that build a bit. i think we'll make attempts to sign a couple of new players, but due to being burned on our biggest signings, I don't think we'll be breaking any more club records this time. unlike many on here who are disappointed with our season, I think upper mid PL is very good for a club our size and I think we'll need some spending to maintain that. Our attack is the obvious area that needs work, lambert is ageing and showing it, JRod plays well, but can't be relied on to score enough goals considering how many chances he gets.

BAP! The Barry & Pap Man-Date Thread - With Photos!
norwaysaint replied to Bearsy's topic in The Muppet Show
Well this is interesting. Is there any way the result of this can prove whether or not Barry is Dune? I can't think of one, sadly. All it will prove is that Barry is in Liverpool, won't it? -
Some great films in there, but some are a joke. Forrest Gump winning best film is crazy, let alone that it beat Shawshank and Pulp Fiction. A Beautiful Mind wasn't a great film, Braveheart and Gladiator are just run of the mill action films. Shakespeare in love? What a joke! As for my favourites, well obviously the Godfather films, but then there's Platoon, Cuckoo's Nest and others, but as an iconic film, the one I would say should never be remade and was perfect for what it was... Is probably The Sound of Music. Wow, I'm gay.
