David Warren, an Australian scientist who invented the "black box" flight data recorder, has died, defence officials said on Wednesday. He was 85. Warren, who died on Monday, came up with the idea for the ****pit voice recorder after investigating the crash of the world's first commercial jet airliner, the Comet, in 1953, the Department of Defence said in a statement. He thought it would be helpful for airline accident investigators to have a recording of voices in the ****pit. He designed and constructed a black box prototype in 1956, but it took several years before officials understood just how valuable the device could be and began installing them in commercial airlines worldwide. Warren was born in 1925 in a remote part of northeast Australia. In 1934, his father was killed in a plane crash in Australia. He became the principal research scientist at the Defence Science and Technology Organisation's Aeronautical Research Laboratories in Melbourne from 1952 to 1983. "Dr Warren's flight data recorder has made an invaluable contribution to safety in world aviation," the defence department said in a statement. In 2002, Warren was awarded the Order of Australia - among the nation's highest civilian honours - for his work. http://msn.nzherald.co.nz/world/news/article.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=10660287&ref=rss

What about that stealth un-manned plane shown by the M.O.D. the other day ? Surely that is a much better and cheaper aircraft than this F22 ?

Got to admire the spin doctor who wrote this in that DC United article. "Pompey plays its matches at legendary Fratton Park, the team’s home since 1898 that is widely regarded as one of the most intimate stadiums in Europe."

Interviews - the other side of the table
Saint in Paradise replied to revolution saint's topic in The Lounge
Slightly off topic in a way but over here in NZ interviews don't appear to be so important anymore.A company with 19 or less employees can take someone on with a 90 day trial period, if they don't come up to requirements they can be let go without worry. This scheme has now been extended to all companies. http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PO1007/S00213.htm http://www.johnlaw.co.nz/publications/employment-law-90-day-trial-period/ -

Just one tip re camping and that is make sure your tent is sealed otherwise you might very well wake up next to a snake. Aussie snakes can be very poisonous. Mind you so are their spiders as well. .

The News of the World are a bit slow sometimes with news. They have just published a story about hard discs in photocopiers, I posted that on here last April

Very funny clip, good job 19C no longer posts as it showed Lawrie Mac several times and we know what that would have led too -
This is very interesting. Select whatever country you want and it appears as a colored line on the graph. Each country will have a different color and you can place your curser over a colored line and get the actual score. http://www.prosperity.com/prosperiscope.aspx You can compare different countries.

BBC Sport understands the club could start the Championship season without any further points penalties, having been deducted nine points by the Premier League last campaign. Someone please explain to the BBC that they won't get a points deduction whilst they are in Admin and the PL points deduction last season is not relevant, only I am off to work now.

Chiropractors usually take an x-ray before doing any manipulation whereas osteopaths and physios don't, well in my experience anyway. Damage which effects the rest of your life could occure if you see the wrong person who just goes ahead and tweeks you.
