The Starmer Years - Can The New Broom Sweep Clean?
badgerx16 replied to sadoldgit's topic in The Lounge
Which amounts to the ships being 'mothballed'' pending any decision to initiate the 'regeneration programme'. Neither Albion or Bulwark have been operational for at least 12 months, and the previous Government showed no inclination to act on bringing them back into service. Such a situation mirrors the Thatcher Government's actions in the Defence Review immediately before Argentina invaded the Falklands - the number of RN ships listed to be decommissioned was a significant factor in the Junta's perception that the UK would not try to counter their actions. ( Hermes was to be decommissioned, Invincible was to be sold to Australia, and both Intrepid and Fearless were to be listed as surplus to requirements as the Navy was pivoted to a predominantly anti-submarine force ). -

"What we’re actually seeing with HMS Bulwark is extended readiness, just under a different name. Despite previous announcements about returning to service, I think most people knew that was unlikely. The reality is that the ship is unlikely to be deployed for any significant operations. The notion of being ready ‘if required’ subtly but unmistakably points to this being the case.” https://ukdefencejournal.org.uk/hms-bulwark-unlikely-to-return-to-sea-unless-needed/ -
It is a Get Out Of Jail Free card that the Israelis have been playing for years.

Just seen it. As entertainment it isn't a bad film; historically it is bunkum. As for the monkey-dog hybrids, sharks in the arena, and grossly oversized rhino, they probably aren't the wildest flights of Scott's fancy. I listened to the Mark Kermode review of Gladiator 2 and he said that early on in the film's genesis Nick Cave was asked to write a script, taking into account that Russell Crown had said he wanted to be in any sequel. What emerged is summarised here https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20180810-gladiator-2-was-written-and-its-mad , and the script itself can be found on the Internet.

Albion and Bulwark were both mothballed by the last Government, and Northumberland is beyond economical repair due to structural failures. -
Remember that if you start playing Stairway To Heaven you have to play through to the end, it is VERY bad luck to stop part way through.

Some old ships, including one that is uneconomical to repair, some outdated drones, and some ancient helicopters are being pensioned off to recover the money currently being sunk into trying to keep them functional and reinvest it on new kit. -

I am aware, and not only because you went out of your way to ensure that the suggestion was posted and repeated on this thread.

US and European military aid was only ever going to stabilise the front line, we never gave them, ( assuming we ever actually had it ), enough to turn the tide as offensive operations require far more hardware than defensive, and Ukraine was never going to gain the key factor - air superiority. Russia will continue to use the meat grinder tactics and chip away at Ukrainian territory; Ukraine does not have unlimited ammunition, and the psychological impact of facing, and slaughtering, WW1 style human waves wears down the defenders.

According to that, so far this year they have captured an area this size of Staffordshire in a country that is two and a half times as big as the UK - just over 1/300th of Ukraine's land mass. In UK terms that is 2 Isle of Wights. Hardly Blitzkrieg. However, conquering Ukraine is not Putin's intention. Retaining the Donbas and Crimea, together with preventing Ukrainian accession to NATO and the EU, would give him all he wanted from the SMO. A frozen conflict suits him.

Any Government trying to increase the tax revenue is going to find someone who complains that their share has been increased unfairly.
