I think it is because he plays like a 40 year old. I like him loads but his absolute lack of mobility is alarming as we have set up more defensively. Maybe he could stay as a squad player? Whether he would be happy with that at this stage in his career? Doubt it! Could well be off Reckon Long is a Hughes type of player to have around.
