  1. We need more Bibi Stockholms - generate more work for our shipbuilding industry at the same time as solving the prison crisis! 😉
  2. No surprise that you posted this given the laughing emojis after Gaza posts. We are supposed to show Trump due respect after a failed assassination attempt but you are quite happy to have a laugh at 19 year old Jay’s death. Classy.
  3. It depends how you define success. If not bringing home a trophy is being successful, we have bossed it from 1968 onwards! 😉
  4. To be fair to the “media luvvies” they have played the game at the highest level and are only saying what everyone else has been saying. We have all ben disappointed with the team selections and tactics. We all want our team to do us proud. I expect ex internationals who haven’t won anything either are even more keen that we finally win something. You only have to look at the reaction of the likes of Wright and Shearer when we score that it means as much to them now as it did back in their playing days. I think that the issue with Southgate is that he not learnt from his mistakes early on and that’s why the pros get so frustrated.
  5. The same Elon Musk who wouldn’t let Ukraine us his satellite system for military purposes 🤔
  6. And yet Southgate failed every time he came up against a quality side. It has been said many times and it is true, he has been very lucky in the draws. I know you only beat what is in front of you but you must wonder what his record would look like if he had met the quality teams earlier.
  7. I don’t disagree that he is only concerned with himself, but he did manage to whip up enough noise to help force Cameron to hold a referendum on Brexit and I don’t think he can be under estimated in the political scene. He manages to make minor issues into major issues and knows how to press buttons. He also knows how to play powerful political games - his late entry into the election race probably did for the Tories more than Starmer’s policies.
  8. I understand that we have only won one trophy, but if you think that not winning trophies makes you successful, then I would suggest that it is you who is the stupid twat.
  9. Every England manager except Sir Alf Ramsey have been losers. What is your point?
  10. It’s like a monkey on the back of the players. They are under massive pressure before they even kick a ball. We need to get rid of this “it’s coming home” nonsense and learn to enjoy the tournaments for what they are, not some sort of endorsement of us being some kind of super race of entitled to sit at the top table because of who we’re are. As has been said on here many times, we are the international football equivalent of Southampton FC, nothing more. I feel sorry for the next guy. Not only will he be expected to get us to finals or semi finals at least, he will be expected to do it playing like Spain or Brazil. No pressure then!
  11. I agree that he is a top bloke and a decent human being. He is not, however, a winner. As I heard someone else say today, coming second is just top of the list of losers. Being successful means winning something. He hasn’t done that. His limitations have been there for all to see and sadly he has not learnt from them as he progressed through the job. Frankly I don’t care who succeeds him so long as they set teams up to win rather than not lose. I wish him every success in the future but he probably needs to have a job “upstairs” or move into something different. He would make a very good politician.
  12. Gareth Southgate would make an excellent MP. Get him on board Sir Keir!
  13. James Timpson has been talking about numbers and saying about a third shouldn’t be in jail to start with. Don’t we jail more %wise than many other European counties? The Probation service, who are already stretched, aren’t going to be happy.
  14. Labour have already been accused of being soft on crime due to the idea of letting prisoners out early to make room for the newly convicted. Not sure what else they are supposed to do? Let people out early or not jail the newly convicted?
  15. 😂 I know but I was waiting for someone else to start a post election thread and it didn’t happen. Maybe, for a change, they will not try and derail it from the start and we can crack on with it?
  16. Now that the GE is done and dusted it is time for a new political thread. Hopefully we can get back to grey, boring politics again after the crazy, psycho dramas of the last few years. Starmer’s Labour have certainly hit the ground running but it doesn’t look like they will be given much of a honeymoon period.
  17. I’m not so sure about Farage. He is not remotely concerned about running his constituency and will employ some minions to do it for him. He is already heading off to the USA this week in support of Trump. He may be just an MP but he sees himself as a major player on the world stage. He will use this position as a stage just as he did when he was an MEP. The media love him because he fills airtime and news columns. I’m willing to bet that he will get as much attention as the next Tory leader, if not more.
  18. He has only been an MP for Clacton for a couple of weeks but he is off already… https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/07/14/im-flying-to-america-to-support-trump-in-desperate-hour/ https://amp.theguardian.com/us-news/article/2024/jul/15/nigel-farage-liz-truss-republican-national-convention
  19. Spot on. The point at which all of the energy and lift the equaliser gave us disappeared. https://amp.theguardian.com/football/article/2024/jul/15/turning-point-england-kyle-walker-throw-in-euro-2024-final-spain Gary Lineker summed it up perfectly. Spain’s win was a triumph for attacking football over negative, defensive football.
  20. Which is a major issue. If Parliament holds all of the power over itself how do we ever get reform if it can vote to protect the interest of the ruling party all of the time. This is where pressure groups and public opinion play their part. As I said before, it worked for Brexit. There are already organisations working to bring electoral reform to the fore. There are many MPs who believe that the system needs to be reformed. The LibDems want reform. Farage will be loudly beating that drum. Parliament may well find it has to agree to a review of the electoral system if there is enough pressure from outside. This thread is supposed to be about the pros and cons of our electoral system and whether it should be changed, not whether the government will or won’t support it. If no one is interested in electoral reform, let’s just forget it and move on, eh?
  21. I don’t think that they go out clubbing together every Friday night, but they never post against each other - Nic was a poor example. Of course people have different views, that is why we come on here to express them, but there is a big difference between discussing topics and targeting someone specifically. You mentioned hypo. He himself made a point of attacking my posts about a couple of right wing bigots and then admitted that he didn’t even know who they were! He used to respond to my posts within seconds, day after day. Fortunately he seems to have dropped the worst of his Baby Reindeer behaviour now but you get my point? There is a big difference between disagreements and obsessive behaviour. There are several people on here who are obsessed. Anyway, I agree with Rallyboy that it is tiresome and will do my best not to rise to the bait in future. 😉
  22. It is pitiful behaviour from a grown man with a family, but then that’s classic narcissistic behaviour for you. Despite having the ignore function explained to him countless times it seems he still doesn’t understand how it works. Perhaps the penny will finally drop this time?
  23. You don’t remember the way he was treated on here before he took time out then?
  24. If you think that it is sanctimonious to call out racists, xenophobes, homophobes etc then that is your right. Personally I think that anyone who thinks that they are superior to others just because they are different in some way or were not fortunate enough to be born with white skin on a rock in the North Sea should be called out for what they are. I insult these people because they have done the same to me for years on here. It is the only thing they understand. They claim to have no affiliation with far/hard right wing politics and it’s mouthpieces yet they jump in to support them at every opportunity. People with that mindset need to be called out wherever they are, even on an insignificant internet football forum. A few years ago it felt like it was only me. Now I am pleased to say that more posters are calling them out on a regular basis. Have you noticed how not one of them ever posts against East Stand Nic? If ever there was a target for an internet pile on it is him, yet they don’t touch his posts at all. Perhaps ask yourself why that is?
  25. Battle box? Is that why Trump supporters stormed Capitol Hill and to this day still insist that the vote (at the ballot box) was fixed? I don’t think that anyone disagrees that the issues should be decided by the ballot box. It’s just a shame that Trump and his MAGA crowd don’t agree.
