  1. St Pauls is supposed to be really good.
  2. As you are so supportive I'm guessing that you'll be volunteering to pay extra tax to pay for your degree in line with the new proposals?
  3. You did the right thing but how much did he offer? If he was a super-rich billionaire that offered you a few £k would you still have said no?
  4. When you read stuff like that from the Pompey Trust it just reinforces the impression that Pompey fans are bunch of gullible cretins.
  5. To be fair he is not trying to win the vote of people like you.
  6. We've had socialists in charge of the UK? when was that?
  7. I actually have a good friend who did that degree and it certainly isn't a dossers degree like the others you've mentioned. He needed good science A Levels to get on it for one thing.
  8. I think Nepal is even 15 minutes ahead of India
  9. You'd raise a hell of a lot more if you just increased the top rate from 40% to 41%. This would affect all top rate payers proportionately - a cut in child benefit impacts someone earning £45k much much more than someone on £100k I'm not exactly sure what you mean by this. Child Benefit is already the means of acknowledging children in the tax and benefit system. It acts as benefit for those who don't pay tax and as tax relief for those that already pay tax.
  10. Much less progressive than you might think. The super rich without kids are unaffected and the super rich with kids won't even notice. But the marginal impact on those just above the upper rate limit (especially if only have one earner) will be very noticeable - some will effectively be getting a pay cut! Much more progressive would be to increase the 40% rate to 41%. And it would raise much more money.
  11. Canada's economy is nothing like ours. It is a massive energy exporter, has huge mineral reserves and is a big exporter of food and timber.
  12. I'm a higher rate tax payer (just) and will be hurt by child benefit taken away. Of course this pales into insignificance compared to people losing their jobs or those on much lower incomes facing cuts etc. However wouldn't it just be farer to simply increase the top rate from 40% to 41% for all tax payers - as well as raising significantly more money? We're going to have the rediculous situation where those earning just below the top rate threshold won't be able to accept small wage rises because they'll lose thousands. The super rich won't even notice a cut in child benefit. The tories are making the poor and the middle classes pay the way out of debt.
  13. Plus a couple each earning just below the threshold are both getting the personal tax-free allowances so already enjoy a tax advantage over the single-earner family before you factor in the benefits reduction. This idea financially penalises parents (mainly mothers) who want to stay at home and bring up their kids - surely the family values loving Tories aren't going to force middle-class mums into work?!
  14. Totally agree. These warnings are rediculous. The fact is that there are plenty of targets in the west and the number of attacks in reality has been very, very few. Yes they are very shocking when they happen but what do warnings achieve except to make some people scared? I recently saw an interview with a US tourist who said that she would now be more vigilant. Vigilant for what? If you bump into some dodgy characters armed with AK47s and Grenades the chances are that it is too late for you to change plans and visit the Lourve instead of the Eiffel Tower.
  15. It is right opposite a big halls of residence so no coincidence that there were a few students hanging around.
  16. Have some of you been on the other Saints fan forums? They are absolutely dreadful, a fiver for this site is well worth it.
  17. The trouble with conditions like ADHD is the general perception held by the public and the fact that unruly kids can be labelled as having ADHD when in fact they are just naughty kids. It's not fair on genuine sufferers.
  18. Not sure that Emma Thompson was criticising the use of slang per se, rather the inability of many young people to differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate use of slang and informal language. Have to say I agree with her to some extent - one of my pet peeves is teenagers saying "like" several times a sentance - it's like so annoying when like they do that While I'm on the subject I also find the over use of "at the end of the day right" and "to be fair" very annoying.
  19. F'ing hilarious, with any luck they'll be back in administration not long after they eventually leave it. Anyone brave enough to make some predictions?
  20. OK, know what you mean - for clarity the weekend in Milan was with my wife, my dad and his wife and my brothers i.e. not a **** up but more eating, shopping, bit of sight-seeing and watching AC at the San Siro. Valencia was a ****-up with the boys - was helped by the fact that one of the party was a local and so took us to the best spots.
  21. Totally disagree with that - its great craic even if you're not really into "that sort of thing". Anyway back to the OP, I've had brilliant weekends in Valencia and Milan, recommend both.
  22. Fantastic, puts the Turner prize into perspective!
