Amesbury Saint Posted 29 July, 2009 Share Posted 29 July, 2009 Several people on here are suggesting that it is ok to wait until the end of August to sign players. There are 5 league matches before the end of August. Lets not have a slow start to the season. Sign the new players this week!
Saint_clark Posted 29 July, 2009 Share Posted 29 July, 2009 Nobody is saying let's wait until the end of august. Some of us seem to realise that we had 3 quarters of our pre-season taken up by the takeover, and as such we have no hope in hell of getting off to as good a start as others. Let's not forget also, that there is a strong possibility that any players we enter negotiations with will already be in advanced talks with other teams, and as such we will automatically be in a weaker position. NickG Posted 29 July, 2009 Share Posted 29 July, 2009 not that its right, but the vast majority of transfers are not only in August but the last 24 hours - and thats teams who had owners in place for ages.
SNSUN Posted 30 July, 2009 Share Posted 30 July, 2009 I'll play. Screw it, at 28 i'm supposed to be at my peak, i've played football before in the park, and despite being morbidly obese, i make up for it in spunk. I won't demand much in wages, and my missus isn't WAG material. Am i in?
BigShadow Posted 30 July, 2009 Share Posted 30 July, 2009 There may be players out there hoping they might get an offer from a championship club - but come August 30 some of them might just realise it ain't happening and we might seem a better proposition at that time. So.....do we sign who we can get now...or hold on till the end of August when there might be a few more talented players willing to put pen to paper for us. On the flip side - I think Rasiak and Saga might be in the reverse situation. They could well be around for most of August and we should play them. They might not want to play in L1 - but they will have to work their arses off as they will be in the proverbial shop window. So...save for a decent Centre back - I think we have enough to see us through August with a decent chance of winning a few. Stop bloody panicking. John D Posted 30 July, 2009 Share Posted 30 July, 2009 so therefore there are 41 games after August. I would rather, if needed, take the time to get in the right players for those 41 games then rush out now to get players who can be signed up now but may not be the ideal ones who could be bought over the course of the next 3-4 weeks. Sure I agree, if our number 1 target for a position is available now we should snap them up. But as others have mentioned there are so many other factors and transfer market forces at work it is very difficult to get the best possible players all before 8 Aug. ALL Division 1 Teams are well down in repect of "Pecking Order" It starts with Prem Teams .... They decide WHO they want to Replace, and once they replace, the ones that they are replacing THEN are up for grabs by CCC Teams ............ The process starts again, and the Residue is up for grabs by DIVISION ! Teams, etc etc Those are the facts of life for Division 1 Teams I am sure Alan Pardew has a " Shopping List", but he has to wait for the Div 1 Shop to be open, before he finds out exactly WHO is available, ie NOT retained/available for transfer Being in Division 1 is no fun ..... but it's even worse for Division 2 Teams

I think people are just stating that we can sign players up until the end of August. We'll have people in before the first game, im sure of it - but i expect us to keep improving right up until the window shuts.

Marsdinho Posted 30 July, 2009 Share Posted 30 July, 2009 Could work in our favour, with 5 games gone we could see who is on form etc...
Saintjersey Posted 30 July, 2009 Share Posted 30 July, 2009 Could work in our favour, with 5 games gone we could see who is on form etc... The problem is starting on -10 you really need to hit the ground running from the first game. 5 games is a potential 15 points, if we say only get 5 or 6 points and are still on minus points for the season, players might be less likely come to a struggling team. Toadhall Saint Posted 30 July, 2009 Share Posted 30 July, 2009 Things will happen when they happen - I'm sure, nay convinced that AP etc are working on the playing side of things but it's not like going to Tesco's to buy a tin of beans.

I think most of us expect some action during the coming week, but the deadline isn't until the end of August and you have to see WHO you need to buy ......and that won't come until we see the first few results. Many clubs have a last minute rush to borrow /loan out players, but I expect AP to have most of him men in place before then.
