Has the spirit of Southampton returned once more?

Not wanting to get carried away but it seems that we are slowly entering a new dawn, it seems a lot of peoples enthusiasm towards the club and city are slowly returning!

We have experienced the darkest of times and at the lowest point under (He who we shall not name) 's Reign i.e the whole going dutch saga and subsequent admin I think a lot of us had lost faith in the notion that we are a superb club and most people couldn't face the pain of watching an extended death of a once great club.

Make no mistake we have a lot of hard work to do and its going to be a long term plan over the next four or five years but I honestly believe that we will see SFC return to where it belongs as a great premiership club!

It may be a cliche to say it but I feel once more we as fans can be proud to be saints fans once more! (Lets face it at one point if you told people you were a saints fan you would face a wave of s******s) I guess what I'm saying is I can see a light at the end of the tunnel and its getting brighter by the day!

Heres to a much brighter future, up the saints! :)

PS Sorry for this somewhat overly sentimental self satisfied rant, my god the swear filter wont let me write s******s!

I tend to agree with you I get the feeling for the 1st time in years we are all pulling in the same direction positive clear leadership from the men upstairs AP seems to know what needs to be done and is getting the resources to achieve it and the fans are behind the whole club very early days but I havent felt this optimistic for ages come Saints keep it up

Having no debt and a wealthy owner helps the situation at the moment.

But it is results which count at the end of the day and I am hopeful that these can be achieved but having endured over four years where things have gone horribly wrong I will believe when it happens

i suppose the big difference is that previously bad decisions taken off the pitch led to bad performance on it.

Now we appear to be able to just look at performances on the pitch

Decisions in the past were taken because of the financial situation we were in now we have no financial problems the club will be able to invest more hopefully to make the team better.

Yeah it almost feels weird to be able to concentrate on whats going on on the pitch for a change rather than what the next catastrophic decision by the inept board is going to be. It feels good

Agreed and it cost us dearly, and yes we shouldn't go down that route again been done to death, lets look to the future

See the nice thing about it all is we can now talk about those, that is now our only concern. The politics consumed this club whole. Made people crazy.

Some people were having a go at legends simply because their son was an agent who maybe got paid for bringing in someone to the club. Every little thing was over analysed to the point it was stupid.

Now that has all changed. You still got some people who are looking to be negative simply because that is what they are used to. If you look at the board your see posts by people showing what i mean i.e Saint Cam and Nickh etc. That is their opinions and they are entitled to them just as we are to ours.

But my point is it will take time for those people to let go of the past and join in on the future. It's like coming out of a bomb shelter after your city has been blown to ****, when someone say's it is ok to come out your still cautious. (i do not actually know what it is like being in a bomb shelter but you get the metaphor)

As that happens we will get back to a level of normality as time passes by the things that ****ed us off will gradually be forgotten.

In 10 years time i doubt many people will mention people such as Lowe again etc

So for me the spirit is returning because for me the spirit is about the football side to the club. When we beat teams like Man Utd you would feel the buzz around the old city. When we would survive another season in the top flight on the last day you could not help but get involved in the celebrating of it even if you were not a fan! Generally was good times!

We will get back there again sometime, hopefully soon. The difference is now we believe it will happen!

Yep - agree with the OP. I was stood under the Kingsland drinking my pint and reading the program when I looked up and suddenly recognised there was a buzz about the place that I don't think I've heard in some time. It definately hit me as an upbeat atmosphere that really felt good. Long may it continue.

Have to agree felt a good vib about the season sat morning. And I can't remember feeling this positive about Saints for a long long time. Today's transfer news has increased the positivity.

As some have also said its GREAT simply talking & debating football issue's without every debate turning into a slanging match.

Onwards & upwards COYR

The whole atmosphere around SMS and the fan base was down to the "He who must not be mentioned on this site any more" factor.

Although the effort and team ethic had something to do with it too.

The fact is we have had bad teams in the past and they all gave 100%. We had players turning up and not giving 50% - and to cap it all a madcap scheme involving an untried experiment combining kids and total football in a big boys league.

The feel good factor is slowly coming back. Season ticket sales are up, we have a Manager who understands the English way, and a defence with experience. We are going to be a very difficult team to beat with a couple more players.

It also has a lot to do with people listening to the fans and taking note of what they think. It's not always correct, but usually fairly close to the truth. Football will always be a game of opinions - 30,000 people can all watch agame and go home with 30,000 different matches to replay. In the last regime there was only one opinion - and no one else was allowed to say anything...if they did challenge they were out. I get the impression everything down at SMS is a little rosier and people actually like going to work again.

The official site seems to be more informative, The Echo seem to be supportive of the local team, and even though relegated last year the fans have not been put off.

The reason for our demise is a ghost of the past.

His brown shirted bully boys are gone.

The lunatic fringe saved our club.

Now all I want is to see The Itchen of "We're The Itchen" fame return to the fold in blocks 1,2 & 3 and make fortress SMS the intimidating place it once was. I never felt so comfortable at a game as when in that spot with the sun on my face, brothers in arms alongside me, and the away fans (bless them)!

One song, we've only got one song...but who cares?

Life goes on with hope thanks to Markus Liebherr and his investment...can we ever thank him enough?

Because of Rupert Lowe i stopped loving Saints. I wondered if i'd ever get back to how it used to be. But just a few weeks have gone and Lowe is already a distant memory.

The spirit of Southampton has returned - we are a united club once more.

As at most clubs... Its too simplistic though. We had a series of bad decisons, that were made because of a number of factors - financial restrictions, as reactions to previous decisions, naiviety, and pig headedness - other decisons were actually quite good, but fecked up in implementation for again a variety of reasons - not least because of who made them causing resistance to their adoption. I believe that alot of the mud slung at Lowe is perfectly justified... but there is also a huge amount of mud slung based on urban myth, speculation, gossip and plain ******....

See this is what I never understood... As I and other said at the time, The club is far more important than any individual whose association will only ever be transient... Lowe only eroded whatever you let him..and I would suggest that releagtion and **** poor results had in reality far more of an impact on the 'spirit' than Rupert Lowe - Saw plenty of Spirit in Cardiff in 03 despite Lowe being in charge ;-) - If he is to be awarded the title of spirit eroder, we have to acknolwedge that...

As I said above - how many folk are prepared to be really honest with themselves?

I will be happy to say my enthusiasn and spirit is directly linked to how well we play and the results - It wont stop me going when I can, but its amazing what even a few goals can do... far too easy to balme the lack of spirit on Lowe - you make your own spirit by how much the results effect your enthusiasm

It never really left. Some of us kept the faith and were rewarded by a miracle. We now have to give our utmost support to ML,AP and the lads. After watching the Darlington v Leeds crap (am I allowed that Mods?) last night we will climb this league pretty fast.

COYR's

Agreed. Considering we're 9 points off second bottom and two divisions below the skates I don't think I've ever felt so optimistic!! :):smt023
