Legod Third Coming Posted 15 August, 2009 Share Posted 15 August, 2009 Lambert is a brilliant signing. Davis is a brilliant keeper. Between them is a heap of mush - a rag-tag of some talent and a bit of experience. We need urgently - and have for FIVE FECKING YEARS. A MIDFIELD GENERAL. TWO STEELY CENTRE BACKS. This information is provided free for the benefit of Nicola Cortese. Don't worry you haven't spotted it yet. I've been suffering this boll0x since 2004. Plus ca change... Edmonton Saint Posted 15 August, 2009 Share Posted 15 August, 2009 Said the same last week, Thomas and Perry are not up to it IMO. Wotton is a shambles, and our wide players are far too weak. Need to get 5 or 6 players in, otherwise we could be looking at a relegation scrap again.

Cabrone Posted 15 August, 2009 Share Posted 15 August, 2009 As far as CBs are concerned wasn't Saeijs interested in a return? Before everyone starts to panic this has to be put into perspective - we lost away to one of the favourites when we have had barely 4 weeks to prepare. It's shouldn't be a big surprise to most fans. That said I think we badly need a competitive midfield. I'd put top priority on a ball winning midfield general and a quality wide man. No point in having the best strikers if we can't service them. VectisSaint Posted 15 August, 2009 Share Posted 15 August, 2009 and im sure will be sh1t again we are league 1 ffs, players will mostly be sh1t He was awful last week as well, we would have won if it had not been for his shocking penalty offence(s) However, clearly huge over reaction by many on here. We lost, again against one of the favourites, and away from home. We know there are still 3 or 4 more players required, why are some so shocked. S-Clarke Posted 15 August, 2009 Share Posted 15 August, 2009 Thomas is ok -but he needs someone dominating next to him. Jaidi would be perfect. Wotton needs to get shot ASAP - part of last seasons disaster and will be part of this seasons disaster if he is not replaced with someone of equal experience...but with a bit of ability. Pace down the flanks is also a priority, playing it narrow will get us no where in this division. Leicester walked this league because they had pace down the flanks and had Steve Howard up top to stick it in. We've got the steve howard type...now all we need is the width and the ''Oakley'' figure.

niceandfriendly Posted 15 August, 2009 Share Posted 15 August, 2009 why are some so shocked. Probably because of the manner of the defeat. I wasn't there, but it sounds like from those who were that we were not even close to competing with Huddersfield today. We should at least be there or there abouts to winning these games imo. saints-cris Posted 15 August, 2009 Share Posted 15 August, 2009 I think we need 2.. Thomas hasn't played all that much in the last year, but he is good for this league, fits the bill well etc. As much as I rate Perry, he is getting on and is just too small. We need 2 big strong centre backs so we dont get bullied everytime we play away. That and a proper holding midfielder.
Bailey Posted 15 August, 2009 Share Posted 15 August, 2009 Sam Sodje and Zak Whitbread please. Ambitious I know, but if we could get these two in then we'd be sorted defensively.
70's Mike Posted 15 August, 2009 Share Posted 15 August, 2009 and im sure will be sh1t again we are league 1 ffs, players will mostly be sh1t disagree there are good defenders in this division , they do their jobs defend and concentrate, Thomas has not shown since he has been at SMS that he is capable of doing both in the same game. we have to make sure that our players, in your terms, are not more sh*t than the opposition

S-Clarke Posted 16 August, 2009 Share Posted 16 August, 2009 on another note, why can't Saga play right wing? he has a good touch, good workrate and plays there for poland often. surely better than our other options there. Interesting shout TBH - but i don't think it solves our real problem. I bet you that Saga will 90% of the time cut inside if he was played on the right...and he's not exactly the quickest. We need an urgent injection of pace in this team (on the right in particular )...and i hope pard's can see that.

Holmes could do well when fit, James has a superb cross. Lallana is an enigma for me. Looked like a young Gerrard in flashes before his injury last season, has looked like a side-show since. eurosaint Posted 16 August, 2009 Share Posted 16 August, 2009 Mellis James Schneiderlin Holmes Lallana Lambert Mellis has pace and (I think) can play wide right. James could sit tight in the middle and keep it simple. Schneiderlin can spray it about. Holmes is a natural left winger. Lallana can play just behind the striker. Lambert is the spearhead. I am assuming that Raz and Saga will be on their bikes and that we will not have new signings by Tuesday night ! TBF I am struggling to get an ideal formation but given what we have at the moment maybe this setup might work ???? Please feel free to tear me to shreds ! yorkie Posted 17 August, 2009 Share Posted 17 August, 2009 I think one of the big problems is we have no width. We don't pass it to each other enough - or fast enough. Everything looks laboured, and telegraphed. Perhaps looking down from on high - everyone seems to want the ball - but they never have enough space or time on the ball. It could be that Huddersfields work rate was better than most - but no one seems capable of finding space. We looked a bit better when Thompson came on - but he strguggled against 2-players almost everytime he got the ball. I thought Melis looked more than a substitute and I won't be surprised to see him start on Tuesday. So in summary... we lack width we lack pace we lack vision we lack any steel/metal Not much to put right - and on top of that we are definitely lacking confidence I thought the fans were good humoured on Saturday and the officials were a little biased on 50/50 decisions...most going the way of the home team. Huddersfield fans wwere good - all three stands making noise independently.
rooney Posted 17 August, 2009 Share Posted 17 August, 2009 How many times has it been said on this Board that we need wingers to get down to the bi-line to cross the ball? How many times does it happen? I saw Murty do it at the Hearts game once but cannot recall mention of it since.

SNSUN Posted 17 August, 2009 Share Posted 17 August, 2009 Agree about the five or six players needed comment. It's quite true. Our first team is ok, our strength in depth woeful. Mills and Holmes are out, and all of a sudden we're using Lallana on the left. Might as well play 3 up front. Put simply we need: Brick sh1t house of a centre back, A younger, talented centre back- i was happy we were linked with that Stockport lad, 21 and captain, Raynes is it? A midfielder with experience and class to compliment Morgan, A right winger with pace and crossing ability, even Ripley the robot would do if he was 12 years younger!, A pacy striker, even if the poles happen to stay, i think we lack one. Of course if the poles go, add another one or two to that tally! I do have full faith in Pardew, and i'm sure he's rectifying it as we speak, but the biggest problem in my eyes is if we obtain mid table this year, the wolves will pick off our better players, Lallana, Morgan et al, and rather than rebuild for next season's promotion push, we'll be back to square one. chivvy1664 Posted 17 August, 2009 Share Posted 17 August, 2009 (edited) The entire midfield is ****ed!! Schnerdelin and lallana are great talents but should feature in sides that are 3 nil up. Wotton talks a good a game. llyod james is a bit rubbish really. Perry is honest but old and too small. Im not convinced mills is up to the left midfield slot. Holmes is ok but always injured. LaptopSaint Posted 17 August, 2009 Share Posted 17 August, 2009 he really isn't good enough IMO. he never has been, even at this level. he doesn't know where hes going to head the ball, he's clumsy and has poor positioning. IMO we need 2 centre backs as we have 2 good full backs and a good keeper. midfield is a mess. schneiderlin is good enough and needs to keep playing, but he needs a strong partner. we dont have that. gillet is too small and his passing is shocking for a professional footballer. wotton should be a sub and no more. we have nothing right wing and we need Mills to start playing left wing ASAP. Then there's lallana. he will have to adapt, play as a forward or he'll waste his career. he's no winger. he never will be. he must play off the striker, or he needs to be out the team as he doesn't have the discipline for central midfield. a free role off lambert would be ideal if we can get the midfield right. which means we probably don't need rasiak. all in all i think we have 7 positions very well filled with davis, murty, harding, mills, morgan, lallana and lambert, but we need 4 more of equal ability. then we'd have amongst the best teams in the league. at the moment, we're not up there. but, it's 2 games. i see amongst some the patience wore out after one loss, which to be fair, was a game we could have lost even with 4 more signings, who knows. it's a long season, pardew needs at least a year to be judged fairly, so lets just see what happens. on another note, why can't Saga play right wing? he has a good touch, good workrate and plays there for poland often. surely better than our other options there. Yup I agree with pretty much all of this. The thing which mystifies me is the continued determination to play Lallana out wide. It's so obviously a waste - surely AP and the coaching staff can see that. Play him just off Lambert and stick with it for half a dozen games (especially if Greg and Saga leave). He's been shunted around so much in the last two seasons he probably doesn't know if he's coming or going anyway.
West End Saint Posted 17 August, 2009 Share Posted 17 August, 2009 So far I have liked what Pardew has said & done and I dont think there is any doubt that he knows what type of player is required before the Lambert signing I was getting twitchy about not having bought anybody but after that master stroke of a signing I have faith we will get at least 1 dominant centre back a centre midfielder with experience and ability and a couple of pacey players. We all know what we need we just need paitence he has said he is close on a couple of signings I am looking forward to seeing who we get I would also kie to see whoever is going get gone Raza 7 Saga maybe once we get a settled squad pulling in the same direction we will be ok.
