I spent last night looking for positives and, in and amongst the general fear and nervousness that seems to plague the team at the moment, actually found quite a few (no, really, stop laughing at the back there).

What I did notice (and against Millwall), was how many times something 'nearly' came off for us, but for whatever reason, be it bad luck, bad touch, slightly underweighted/overweighted pass, just too slow (a lot of that!!) to start a run, making a substitution earlier etc etc, it didn't come off.

As a small example I will choose an instance from both halves where we could have witnessed two of the best goals for ages. In the first half Lambert tried to chip the GK - 1" higher and it would have made it. In the second half, KD made a Beckhamesque pass to the right wing, beating the defender all ends up, for Paterson to run onto and shoot first time - again if that had screamed in etc etc. And finally the last 10 minutes where we had a good 5 or so chances including 2 free kicks just outside the box, the second of which produced an excellent save.

I honestly feel that we are not far away from a 'magic moment' where everything suddenly starts to work. I said a while ago that I think Saints are like a car you've just restored. At first it won't start at all, then lo! a cough, a splutter, firing on one, then two, then with one almighty backfire and a cloud of smoke, it's starts to purr!!

Nice one Ron.

We should be used to these rubbish starts to the season by now.. I can't recall any season where we have started well.

I think Saturdays game might be the turning point for us.... with Hammond and not Wotton in the middle :-)

I wouldn't bet against it being Hammond AND Wotton in the middle!

Kelvin did make some good saves last night but none where has had to go full length and fly through the air tipping the ball round the post etc. Nothing that I would have thought Bart couldn't make.

The optimism of Ron could actually be on course if we can only get a CB and a big mobile hard as nuts one that tells all forwards to keep clear or else.

I'm sure things will improve, but I'm sorry, there were no possitives from that game.

Lambert got one decent free kick on target and put the other in the grandstand. Nothing exciting there. His chipped shot came from a bad mistake by a Swindon defender and was nothing at all to do with the creative tallents of our midfield. Pato running onto a long ball from Davis and putting it into the grandstand again was not exciting either.

There was nothing to be optimistic about from that performance. We simply squandered a couple of half chances born from Swindon mistakes.

Blimey, that's just desperate. We managed two slices miles off target and a crappy chip in the entire match from open play. We were TERRIBLE. the only bright spot for me was that some of the worst culprits were exposed - that's the last time I give Lancashire the benefit of the doubt, anyway.

I can only hope Pardew's upbeat media proclamations are vastly different to what he's telling the team about yesterday's performance.

I suppose this positivity after a game thing is becoming more like the water cycle? except, lets call it the cycle of false optomism

i think your right!!!

we are going to beat brentford!!!

can't wait for tomorrow, never been so excited

wotton out, lallana out, rasiak out, lancashire out, perry out, thomas out, schniederlin out, pardew out etc...

don't worry guys, lambert had a shot that was only 3 yards wide! if that went in we might have been back in the game at 1-3!!!

i think your right!!!

Ooh, hang on, I've just remembered Mellis' disguised through ball in the first half, that was awesome.

Now if we can get him to run around all game and chase the ball, we'll have something. Trouble is at Chelsea no-one's going to slice the ball into the crowd if you pressurise them, so no-one bothers - it's a bit of an adjustment to realise that the Swindon keeper's going to hack it off the pitch if you chase him (not that Mellis should have been the one doing that though).
