Violence

Just watched some West Ham v Millwall footage on Youtube and thought whats the most violence in recent years related to Saints?

When we play Pompey there is obviously high tension but the violence wouldnt be as bad as West Ham, would it? I have no idea so I am curious

I just find the footage remarkable and amazed at the utter hatred between the two sets of fans. It's disgusting to be perfectly honest.

Don't think we've had widespread violence in recent years. There is ALWAYS some drunken idiot taking a swing at a rival fan after a match. Usually it is reported on this site and people respond with comments like, "our fans are all violent pikeys FFS!" and "this happens evey match, are fans are getting worse"

In reality it usually just one or two muppets in 20 odd thousand.

Don't know about trecent years but I remember being at The Dell for a FA cup against Man.U (might have been 1977), the atmosphere has been ugly all day and at the match. The United fans invaded the pitch at the end of the game and then some Saints fans went on the pitch prompting the Man U fans to charge them. Most ran off except one guy who stood his ground and took out the first Man U fan to reach him - then he was swamped, knocked down and kicked sh*tless. The sight haunts me to this day. Was he brave or foolish ???

Highbury 84

Oh yes and I do believe it was so called Saints fans caused most of it. At the Dell Spurs in 1977/78 was bad even though a 0-0 draw secured promotion for both teams. In fact that was probably the worst season I can remember with real trouble v Millwall ( home) and away at Charlton, Brighton and Fulham ( mainly Chelsea fans I recall) so mainly the usual suspects and those without even having to think about it.

It would have been our rematch with them in 1976/77 when we drew at the Dell and lost the replay, some pretty nasty scenes at Old Trafford I recall from Man U fans including spitting at the Saints team coach and the police just standing by doing nothing. Can't say I recall the trouble at the home game though.

I remember the very incident you're talking about but...that guy who was 'kicked sh*tless' was a Manc. There were 1000s of them getting on the pitch, unfortunately (for him) one of the first made straight for the Milton beckoning the Saints lads to come on and 'ave it but then turned and ran back towards the advancing Manc mob. They must have just thought it was some psycho home-boy and............

These were the days when Man U swamped everywhere they went, 10,000 regularly turning up, many without tickets and they just trashed everything. No one could get near them through shear weight of numbers, all blokes. As well as the gnarly northeners you had to contend with the ****ney-Reds, Bristol-Reds and just about every wannabe-hooli from all corners of the country.

I was at both games - what I saw at the Dell was written above - I didn't see any trouble at Old Trafford but I heard about Saints fans smashing up a take-away.

I'm glad to hear it was a Man U fan - I've always thought I should have done more to help him (if it was a Saints fan), now I can sleep more easily!:)

Well it wasn't me ! The main trouble was in the car park pre match, luckily my mates and me were not wearing scarves and of course being at OT any accent other than a Mancunian one was generally assumed to belong to a Man U fan !

There were quite a few Saints who stood their ground that day as I remember. My late father was a steward who usual patch was in 'blood alley' which as our older readers will remember was the alley at the back of the Archers, behind the away section. That day he was in the Milton, when we meet up back at home later that evening, he told me of this one Saints fan in particular who took on and 'did' three Mancs before just knocking out any 'Manc' who came at him. His mate, the Head Steward, Pete Chase told my Dad and a couple of others to get hold of him, which they were just about to do when my Dad recognised him as a plain clothed copper who was having a field day, so they just left him to it and concentrated their efforts elsewhere.

As everyone knows we had upset them in the same competition the previous season and they weren't very happy about that, hence the trouble before and after the game.

Birmingham City in our relegation season 1974. All the way from the ground along Hill Lane to the station was one long battle field :smt118 The 2-1 loss as good as sent us down :(

Same thing happened a few years later, 83 ish but this time we sent them down, similar scenes down Hill Lane again but unfortunately for me I had to travel on the same train back as the Brummies, praying nobody spotted my SFC badge on my Pringle type jumper that was the rage at the time [-o

Brighton away back around the late 70's was always a hoot :p

Just hope those days don't come back, despite the efforts of our famed yoof.

Apart from the fact that there were several hundred outside without tickets and when the senile old twot of a steward made his way down from the chocky box and opened the Milton Road exit gate at 4.20, despite everyone screaming at him to leave it shut.

Never mind. I was told later that nothing much happened in that last 20 mins as we quickly made friends with our Northern cousins!

Not saying there was no trouble, just I don't remember. It happens as you get older!

In my football going memory, which spans back to the early 70's I'd say that the only violence to be anywhere near the West Ham/Millwall trouble was the semi at Highbury. - Main news on News @ Ten and front page on all the Sunday's.

Other memorable "off's" were as previously mentioned @ Brighton, (saw someone stabbed right in front of me), the Bristol away games, a Chelsea night game in about 74? stabbings under the East Stand, and one team that I have a personal problem with - Villa, always seem to be looking for it with Saints, Pitch invasion @ our last game of the season in the late 90's, and a mate of mine got a bottle in the face for being in the wrong pub once at that ****hole.

That Chelsea night game I will always remember...think Steve Sherwood was their goalie that night (possible debut). We won and I remember from the safety of the Upper West Stand watching a few pitch invasions by groups. Loved the comic Police chases as always a copper lost his footing to loud cheers from all sides of the ground.

Leeds Utd did not take well to that Terry Curran goal in 79!

The situation I always remember was against Arsenal in (I think) 78. The game had finished and the OB were just about to herd the Arsenal fans out of Archers Road & back down Hill Lane to the station so they were taking up all of the road. Someone who obviously didn't like his Saturday afternoon being delayed just decided to try and drive straight through the Arsenal fans!! Needless to say, he didn't get very far & didn't have an undamaged panel left. I left (being only about 8 at the time) with 3 of them on the roof!!!

Late 60's early 70's against every london side, on the terraces at the Milton, followed by running battles down Hill Lane to the station.

not saying anymore as i will be accused by the PC brigade of glorifying violence.

still made lots of mates from different parts of the city, who are still friends today, during the week lots of area rivalry but on saturdays we were Saints

A few pints in The Warrens then leave very late to wander through town to The Dell with a bunch of quite and reserved gentle folk..

my trek would be Haymarket, Warrens , sometimes Park Inn, Scullards, then pie shop and then either straight to the Dell although i do vaguely remember going to the Anchor, i think it was called, which was at the bottom of Hill Lane

I loved football with my fighting in the 70s, not nearly as much as throwing banana's at black players or smearing dog-sh1t on all the P*ki's doors. Oh God, i 'spose i'm not even allowed to say that in Brown's PC Britain, here come the thought police etc etc etc

Naughty, naughty Jeff!!!

The Dirty Leeds fans took Saints come back form 2-0 down to draw 2-2 draw in the first leg at Elland Road badly too, they were vertually line up outside the ground to beat up Saints fans and the Police did nothing, I ebded uo with a thicjk lip that night after getting hit from behind by a less than friendly local and only just made it back to the car in one piece that night.

I've heard of the Soul Crew, but Soul Cellar??? Is it a typo for Salt Cellar?

About 18 months ago there was a thread about the Soul Cellar pub down by the Civic Centre, a good few years ago it used to be called The Painted Wagon, Nick Anthony was the DJ there at the time. Some would say that back in the bad old days there were a number of naughty boys that used to drink in there and they ran coaches to away games. The Soul Cellar thread then became nostalgic talking about people, memories and storys from the 70s and 80s. The thread ran for a couple of months or more till it was hi-jacked by the PC brigade and closed down, happy days.:)

I remember the Painted Wagon when it first opened - back in the days when "themed" pubs were all the rage and everybody wanted to drink in them!

What a depressing trip down memory lane to the seventies.....talking of which, at the Brentford game I saw a Saints fan walking past the Saints Shop with a red and white scarf tied around his wrist :D

I thought I was in an episode of "Life on Mars" or "Ashes to Ashes".

it brings back good memories but it doesnt mean we want those days back. i got through basically unscathed apart form a load of trouble at Bristol C and brighton. it wqas fun as a nipper watching the Milton a sea of fighting. When the london teams casme down it was bedlam there.I evenrecall the police saying at half time they'd clear the Milton if the fighting didnt stop.No segregation just a line of bobbies between both fans. It's hard for anyone not there to understand or imagine what it was like.

I liked the silk scarves of the very early 70's. They would tie them around their wrists or put them through their belts.

I love the way the "old boys" laugh at the yoof etc and claim that they'd never want the "old days" back in football again, and then at the same time get nostalgic and talk up their past run in's, even making it sound desirable to the young'uns....

I know what you mean but there wasnt the predominance of knives in those days. You got a punch or a kicking not a blade.

Doc Martins, drainpipes, jean jacket covered in badges (sown on by me I hasten to add), scarf around each wrist and rock hard teenage scowl perfected in the mirror. Soon swapped the jean jacket for a donkey jacket when I got really 'ard. What a p rick.

In fact, we were so hard that an entire coach load of us got confonted by a single Spurs fan at White Hart Lane once. The ones in the front decided to move to the back to avoid having to be the ones to take him on first. The ones left at the front did the same, and so on.....cut to the scene with 30 odd Saints fans being chased down the road by one bloke. Must have looked comical.
