Saint_clark Posted 11 September, 2009 Share Posted 11 September, 2009 Southampton FC were originally called Southampton St Mary's as they were formed at St Mary's YMCA. The Village People, all of whom come from Hampshire and some of whom support the Saints (the Cop, The red indian and the contruction worker), wrote their big hit YMCA as a tribute to the club. To even things out the remaining three members insisted that the groups next single be about Portsmouth FC hence the "in the Navy"

DT Posted 11 September, 2009 Share Posted 11 September, 2009 Charlton was actually named by film giant Charlton Heston, who came across the place when he was looking for a new hutch for his rabbit, Wheelies. Before that it was known as Marilyn Monroe. FACT

eurosaint Posted 11 September, 2009 Share Posted 11 September, 2009 For the non intellectuals amongst us, this is a reference to the Rodney/Cassandra wedding scene when Marlene (upon hearing the words "do you Rodney Charlton Trotter take this woman etc....) exclaimed 'Charlton' is that after Charlton Heston ? The response was "nah love, 'Charlton Athletic' !!! HTH
EastleighSoulBoy Posted 11 September, 2009 Share Posted 11 September, 2009 http://www.charltonlife.com/forum/comments.php?DiscussionID=11920&page=1 This one made me chuckle " . . . . It is also not widely known but none of the streets have a house with the number 97, this is in memorial to the 97 carpenters who were executed for failing to inform his Majesty that they had forgotten to put the plug in on the Mary Rose " No wonder those skates dislike us! Rebel Posted 11 September, 2009 Share Posted 11 September, 2009 Charlton were formed by a group of welshmen living in a part of London no one else wanted too - or could find on a map Hence the red shirts and white shorts for the kit - and the name of the ground - The Valley -as they missed the Valleys of home - plus they didn't really know where they were and had no imagination as they didn't know where they were they named the club after the great footballer Bobby Charlton - as they liked his hair and were all Man Utd fans really anyway and it's true Charlton fans are the rarest in London - although there are some in Manchester
RedAndWhite91 Posted 11 September, 2009 Share Posted 11 September, 2009 It is also known that Charlton consider Millwall their rivals, however, Millwall see West Ham as their main rivals. A bit like how Bournemouth see us as major rivals but we don't really give a toss about them.
