saintsforlife7 Posted 26 September, 2009 Share Posted 26 September, 2009 Mellis should have scored when Lambert rolled him in and agreed, 2 points lost. Our support today was second tonone, constant noise a part from aperiod after their goal. Alan Pardews red n white army went on for large periods of the game, especially 1st half! Also good to hear songs for CMFG,Groves,Ken Monkou etc. Solid at the back but missing Thomas hurt us and not enough getting to the byline and crosses to Lambert who looked to be getting frustrated as another went down the keepers throat. Glad to have a point to travel home with though!

It was also noticeable that very loose ball in their box was just out of reach etc...... I thought we played them off the park but just lacked that killer edge in front of goal. Glasgow_Saint Posted 26 September, 2009 Share Posted 26 September, 2009 How poor were the Carlisle fans - never witnessed such a silent home crowd. Agreed though Saints fans were brilliant. Thought the game highlighted more negatives than positives - Carlisle wont win many this year (poor side) and our creativity, pace and guile in the final 3rd is a worry. benjii Posted 26 September, 2009 Share Posted 26 September, 2009 I'm sure once Papa and Holmes/Mills are fully fit we will improve our creativity. Look, we will not finish near the bottom. That is obvious. We will not finish in the play-offs; nevermind, we will go up next year. I'm just so glad that the people in charge of the club have a bit more perspective than many of the people on here. Shame we didn't win today but an away point is never the end of the world and we are now getting into the zone where we should be the dominant team in virtually every match - if you'd asked most fans if that was likely before the season started with a back 4 of Molyneux/Mills - Lancashire/Thomas - Perry - James, I think most would have taken it. Pardew is doing a good job. The board are doing a good job. We are moving in the right direction.

saints triumph Posted 26 September, 2009 Share Posted 26 September, 2009 A win draw, a better feeling getting a very late equalizer than leading and conceding a late equalizer. We had enough chances to have won 3 games, which is a concern. We must address this quick. The big plus was the fans, we were brilliant.
Colinjb Posted 26 September, 2009 Share Posted 26 September, 2009 Just got back to Cov. Made the appalling, stupid, rediculous mistake of leaving as injury time began, thinking I could avoid a bit of traffic on the way out and get to the local a little bit quicker to drown out the feeling from another defeat. So, just a I drove past the ground, looked left and saw the entire away end erupt....... Main feelings from the game. Lloyd James was run ragged all day, couldn't cope with their winger. Mellis should have tucked away that golden chance and we sorely miss the efforts of some fully fit wingers. I barely noticed Hammond all game but at the back we looked relatively decent. Lallana looked very lively and Lambert struggled for service but battled well. Typically we conceeded a scrappy goal leaving me feel so mugged I left, but we have the makings of a good team there. When was the last time we scored at the death?

Ash Posted 26 September, 2009 Share Posted 26 September, 2009 Just got back. Thought we perhaps deserved a little more but our delivery in the final third was abysmal. Lloyd James's corners were absolutely shocking; it wouldn't be over the top to say that the school team I was playing in while I was six had people who could take corners better than that. I hope Lee Holmes can get back to fitness and Papa can make a mark on the wing because having someone as lethal as Lambert making do with the **** he is served up is frustrating. Pleased to keep the unbeaten run going, hope we can keep that going for ages. Carlisle is a good away day though, everybody seemed really friendly, the drive up is very scenic and the pie was the best I've had for aaaaages

It's the first time i've ever done it. Never again! I've done it once years ago when I went to watch England Under 21s at The Dell with my mate and his dad; he made us leave at 90 mins at 1-0 to England and we missed 2 England goals. At least that was out of my control given that he was driving, and I had no choice in the matter unless I wanted to walk home!! jim_bergerac Posted 26 September, 2009 Share Posted 26 September, 2009 Just got back after what is the home game for me living in Scotland. Really delighted to see the fans go away with something as the support was tremendous. Carlisle fan said to me at the station "you lot made some noise by gum". Was surprised to hear and see so many Scottish Saints there today. Fantastic gesture by the team to throw their shirts into the crowd at the end (I believe they have to pay £50 back to club when they do that). A small price though giving the support they got. Anyway, onwards and upwards me hopes. COYR.

saints triumph Posted 26 September, 2009 Share Posted 26 September, 2009 Southampton, skates support The following was taken from a carlisle forum Impressed with both sets of away support this week, both in number and noise. Respect to all those who made the trip - bar that t*sser with the bell. And while we are on the subject of irritating noises at football games, which bright spark decided to give every child a kazoo? Let's hope the next time they come up with an idea like this is in another 100 years. In contrast, credit the club for the under-stated but dignified parade of legends. Particularly moving to see the ladies representing Ross and Balderstone come out to such a reception - and well done Saints fans for applauding too. AndyNorthernSaints Posted 26 September, 2009 Share Posted 26 September, 2009 Good day out with pre match beers in the The Griffin and Rugby club and thought the support was decent today. Saints domintated the game as usaul without actually creating clear cut chances. Player ratings Davis - 6 not much to do but would rather he was not Saints playmaker. James 5 given a hard time and not convincing defensively or with passing. Harding 6 solid and always made himself available Jahidi 7 solid and came up with vutal goal Trottman 7 looked solid and composed Mellis 7 seemed to get a bit of stick but i thought it was his best game and unlucky not to score. Morgan 7 looked classy at times but needs to be more assertive going forward. Hammond 6 not as impressive as recent games. Mills 6 bit lighweight and poor crosses, Lallana 8 tried hard and was was most creative player on pitch Lambert 7 won lots in air and held ball up well but needs better service. shurlock Posted 26 September, 2009 Share Posted 26 September, 2009 (edited) Back from the game - obviously the manner and timing of the goal sticks out. Great to see us to get something at the death for once, sweet justice for stockport. You could feel the life sucked out of the stadium as Jaidi nodded in a header that was beautifully teed up by the keeper's miscue. Also great to see the unity in the team after we scored - there is a spirit beginning to form that shouldn't be underestimated. No doubt, the result was deserved. They had two chances -one header from a corner in the first half that was cleared off the line and the other, a series of fortunate deflections/breaks that resulted in the goal. I guess my one disappointment is that we didn't quite build on the first half performance in which we were rampant. Our play was as fluid as I've seen it this season, even if the goal was scrappy and from a very cheap freekick (Holmes went down rather theatrically). At least in the first half, creativity was not an issue. Interestingly alot of our good play came from Lambert's partnership with Lallana who effectively played as the second striker (though he went to the left and then the right when Papa and then Holmes came on). Lallana was my MOTM - his excellent close control allowed him to pick up, retain and build on Lambert's knock downs (yet again he won everything in the air). While some think that Lallana is neither fish nor fowl, neither forward nor winger, its a partnership I would persevere with because the two seem to have a natural understanding. They were also helped by Mellis who -yes I'm not afraid to say it- had a decent game. He broke from midfield and linked up with Lambert and Lallana to provide lots of threat (most of our attacking play came down the right first half). Yes his finishing leaves a bit to be desired - he seems to want to take that extra touch or have that bit more time on the ball; but its a confidence thing. And lets not confuse things - his second half-chance wasn't gilt-edged, a sitter - he was stretching/running at pace from an angle; it was his willingness to run with the ball, play a give-and-go with Lambert and get into the box that created the chance. It was a chance he crafted out of nothing. Unfortunately we started chasing the game in the second half and our play got more ragged after their goal (not making excuses but the sun didn't help). James had a poor, poor game - he gave attackers too much space and his distribution was erratic just when we needed someone to take a touch and play it simple. Mills had a very quiet game and I was a bit worried by Jaidi and Trotman's lack of pace at times (Trotman made what could have been two very costly slips). Hammond was much more defensive-minded today which placed more pressure on Schneiderlin to get forward which goes slightly against his nature. WHen things do click, they can be devastating. In the first half, Carlisle broke dangerously from a corner; Schneiderlin followed the attacker for 40 yards before making an exquisite challenge, turning on a sixpence, weaving past a few challenges and hitting a great pass. He's not a big personality, so he possibly needs somebody to keep talking to him, to keep him involved. Another thing worth clarifying for those who only have available BBC stats. We had plenty of corners yes but particularly in the first half wemade full use of them -thanks to Mills delivery. For some reason, we changed things in the second half with James taking over and we looked pretty toothless (usual nonsense, failing to beat the first man etc). Holmes had a go after he came on and finally Schneiderlin took the freekick that led to the goal. SUpport was fantastic - the fans dusted down a few classics (the Le Tiss, Pahars, Kevin Davies, Shipperley and Marsden chants) before sustaining AP red-and-white army for most of the second half. Carlisle did very little, though the half-time celebrations woke them a bit. First game I've seen where a team has tried not to use more than one ball. All in all, a decent result and some real flashes of understanding between players in the final third. But there's a long way to go. AP is going to have some interesting choices ahead of Tuesday - what to do with James, whether to play Lallana upfront again (I would depending if Papa starts), whether to stick with Mellis (I start) and whether to give Papa a start (I think he's about ready - certainly not afraid of the physical stuff). I thought that Lallana was MOTM. His 1st touch and ability to turn away from challenges at the same time constantly gave him space. Unfortunately, with no midfielders breaking beyond him he often had the space to play a killer pass but no one ahead of him. I also thought he should have scored 1st half when put through but I may be doing him an injustice regarding the angle considering the angle we were watching from. AP has an interesting problem I agree, does he play 2 up top and AL behind in the hole or just Lambert up and AL off him? Either way AL, yesterday, was the best player on the park IMHO.
