It's simple really.

I watched closely the way we played on Saturday and it reminded me of the very first training session AP did at Saints.

He wants the ball down the flanks into open space where Lallana or Papa would either beat there man to cross/square it for the on rushing midfielders or they cut the ball back for Harding/Murty to either cross it in, Sometimes they play it inside the centre to Hammond or Morgan if they have not made a run.

That's our only style which operates only on a 4-5-1 formation.

Did Brighton suss us out or something?

Discuss please as I love in depth footy talk.

Brighton was a freak result. Their's was probably the best performance by a visiting side this season (although Naaaarwhich were probably the best visting side overall). They caught us on an off day and were highly motivated to perform that night. Business as usual now though.

IMHO, we have such a strong squad that, even though we play a fairly simple system, it works for us as other sides don't have the quality to counter it (even if they have sussed us out). Naaarwich, Leeds and maybe Charlton/Huddersfield are the only other teams with that sort of power and quality.

I got roasted on here by daring to suggest Orient managed to do the same thing....

We must continue to play to Lamberts strengths above all whilst he is in form.

But are we at the moment because 70% of the time the centre backs often hoof it anywhere expecting him to control it when it's 15 feet over his head.

The poor guy is chasing lost causes so often, gotta admit though if you give him the ball on the decks from 25 yards out he looks dangerous.

Brighton - never recovered from Jaidi deciding to try and raise his ageing leg to stop that cross rather than a simple header away. Midfield overrun. They played well to impress new jug eared manager. Davis in goal to increase hesitancy/stasis in gap between defence and keeper, which all managers now know about. They exploited this too.

Still, AP's style - if it is his only one - is working ok, I'd say. Would still like to see new central defender and back up keeper or replacement for Bart.

we did not have the right players last season to suit, but imo we look better with lambert upfront on his own with papa and al on the flanks.

where does this leave connolly?

On the bench as a super-sub. Always the option of going 4-4-2 if things aren't working.

Pardew is a legend in waiting... :)

I don't think we can under estimate what Lambert offers us. He really is the key as everything goes through him and in my opinion it wasn't a coincedence that we didn't get going against Brighton when he was suffering from flu (of course our back 4 letting the ball bounce every time they hit it forward didn't help). I've been impressed with Connolly but think we're better off playing Rickie as the target with the 2 wide men playing off him. The only thing he lacks is a turn of pace but if he had that he wouldn't be playing fur us and would be at a club in the Prem, even so, we can get away with him not having much pace as 2 wide lads provide it.

When it clicks, the front 3 are close to unplayable.

Mainly because Orient very definitely didn't suss us out. They scored one decent goal and only broke into our half a couple of times in the second half, one of which lead to an own goal. For the remainder of the match we controlled play and possession and were almost constantly on the attack. It was just one of those days when we couldn't get the final ball right to create a clear opening until Rickie did his thing just before the end.

As for Brighton, I'd say 9 of our staring team had an off day, which is going to happen every so often. We tried to play the sort of game that the OP describes but they were a bit sharper than us and beat us with a counter attacking game that they played well.

We look more prone to attack from fast attacks as we haven't got the pace in defence to recover if we get turned. It hasn't happened much this season, mainly because the defecne have worked well as a unit, but against Brighton they just didn't.

Orient got a lucky draw though. Brighton beat us fair and square. If you'd have said nothing after the Orient game and then made that comment after the Brighton game, people would have agreed with you because you would have made sense. You were knee-jerking after the Orient game, that's why you got roasted.

We played 4-4-2 against Brighton, and they basically raised their game 100% against us. New manager too, plus small rivalry involved.

They go their tactics spot on, in my eyes the main reasons we lost were poor final ball (except for young Lloyd who's crossing was very good) and also Lambert could not win anything that night.

We just didn't seem able to change our tactics, nothing on the deck just all hoof ball. Against the 'Dons we were able to mix it up and bit, as we did against Charlton a few nights before, but we failed against Brighton.

It was an off game IMO.

As for Connelly, if the 4-5-1 is working, which it was, then don't change it, if it leaves Connelly on the bench so be it.

If i was a manager i would work with the philosophy of tactics first and players to fit in, not the other way around.

Orient made chimps out of us for a large portion of that game.

Deal with it, happy-clappers.

Is it easy commenting on the game in the snowy mountains then ??

We finished poorly against Leyton that is all, we dominated the game.

FFS, even against Brighton we at times seemed unstoppable, we just could not find a decent final ball, finish.

Shots on target

  • Leyton Orient 2
  • Southampton 9

Shots off target

  • Leyton Orient 4
  • Southampton 8

Corners

  • Leyton Orient 5
  • Southampton 13

They sure did give us a tactical masterclass. I long for the day when we can tactically wallop someone to the extent that the we manage two shots on target (one of which was in the first minute).

Just when I had begun to waiver from my belief that you actually a rare comic genius rather than the fool many people think, you give me the biggest laugh for some time on here to reaffirm it.

Thanks.

I think our achilles heel is lack of pace at the back, whatever formation we play. Against teams with pace or who move the ball around quickly (e.g Brighton and Norwich) we have sometimes struggled a bit. Although Orient were a little fortunate on the balance of play, Jaidi got isolated against Orient's pacy winger, which led to the og. Brighton made our two CB's look ponderous at times. In retrospect it would have made sense to have played 4-5-1 against them to at least try to protect the back four. I'd like to see a pacy CB brought in in January but such players are like gold dust.

IMO by next season we will see two, if not three new players in our back line anyway...

What a load of wishy-washy codswallop.

Finishing and putting the ball in the net is an integral part of the game, not some sort of f**king garnish.

You win a game by scoring GOALS, not by playing loads of tippy-tappy posession.

Yep and we've been scoring PLENTY, so what's the problem?

Your favourite phrases seem to be that and "pretty little triangles".

Let me tell you we do not play this way - we play direct.

Leyton Orient were very lucky, and even their fans admitted it after the game.

So, you reckon we won the game in some sort of moralistic manner by a scoreline of 17-5.

Daft.

And we got absolutely battered and they made us look like chimps did they?:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

There's only one daft person on this thread, and I think everyone knows who it is.

Erm, how about the fact we've been conceeding a lot too ?

Err, scoring a lot more than conceding. 3 points is 3 points is 3 points. I don't care how we win as long as we do. And we've won a lot of games recently. Why not concentrate on how many we've won rather than the draw and the loss we have had?

They went about the game with an intent, enthusiasm, energy and came within about 6 or 7 minutes of taking all 3 points, despite our expensive, "talented" and glamourous (for this league) team.

Wow you really do hate SFC don't you. All you do is diss them. You don't have to support SFC if it hurts you so much.

I think we went through a bit of a flat spell recently.

Something definitely knocked Trotman off his stride.

If we're still talking about the Orient game, it might be the fact he played the full 90 minutes with concussion after their player headbutted THROUGH Trotman to get to the ball.

As for going through a flat spell, just check out one of Nicks fantastic threads about recent results. I'm sure he'd be more than happy to set you straight.

Are you going through rehab or something ?
