Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 16 January, 2010 Share Posted 16 January, 2010 For those who were there, how did they get on (particularly Fonte, seeing as we spent big to get him)?
Saints foreva Posted 16 January, 2010 Share Posted 16 January, 2010 Fonte was good in the first half, poor in the 2nd. Should have been sent off aswell. Jon was good attacking though I think he could have done better for their goal. Seaborne looked very average.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 16 January, 2010 Share Posted 16 January, 2010 Fonte was clearly a class above, he won practically everything. Otsemebor is a better right back than James it seems, not that that is difficult, but a definite improvement in that position. He needs to track back quicker though. Agree with above post, Seaborne looked average. He was good at times, but could have improved his positioning. Seemed he was trying hard to impress, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. shurlock Posted 16 January, 2010 Share Posted 16 January, 2010 (edited) Thought Fonte was the best of the three - bit cynical in his holding which the ref picked up on in the 2nd half. Would like to have seen more of his reputed distribution tho. Seaborne had a very poor game- the difference between the FOnte and Seaborne was best captured in the 2nd half when both charged up for a header, leaving their forward free to break into the box. The ball dropped to the winger but Fonte was able to recover, turn back and snuff out the cross. Thought Jon had a good game - showed good concentration. Tidy in possession. Think he would link well with a more attacking RM who likes the ball played to feet. Edited 16 January, 2010 by shurlock

forever a red and white Posted 16 January, 2010 Share Posted 16 January, 2010 fonte did very well. Seaborne, was okay distribution not great but he is a cb after all, JO did a solid job. Very difficult but considering three of the back five (incl KD) were new and got a draw at millwall, was a respectable start
Rasiak-9- Posted 16 January, 2010 Share Posted 16 January, 2010 I disagree with most everyone. They're all very good especially Fonte who really is the brave and tough but also skillful and calm defender we had hoped he'd be. Ultimately I thought they all had a good game apart from the complacency they showed in the last minute. A lot of the pressure they came under was down to the fact our midfield was overran and our strikers lost the ball as soon as they got it. The defence actually played very well. Chez Posted 16 January, 2010 Share Posted 16 January, 2010 Seaborne was poor IMO. Morrison beat him every time in the air. Worrying as ballwinning is supposed to be his best facit. Jardi and Fonte will be tremendous. Otsemobor did OK.
NickG Posted 17 January, 2010 Share Posted 17 January, 2010 surprised he started Seaborne as thought he would be longer term Thought CBs would be 1) Fonte 2) Jaidi 3) Perry /Thomas 4) perry/thomas 5) Seasborne Until maybe next season when Seaborne higher up pecking order
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 17 January, 2010 Share Posted 17 January, 2010 Seaborne was very poor IMO. As stated above; considering heading ability is meant to be one of the stronger aspects of his game, his percentage of headers won was awful. He also just booted the ball whenever it fell to his feet, regardless of whether there was other options on. I thought Fonte played really well and you could tell that he;d come from the CCC. Similarly, Otsemebor played reasonably well.

A lot of the pressure they came under was down to the fact our midfield was overran and our strikers lost the ball as soon as they got it. The defence actually played very well. Well I mostly agree with you. Seaborne was very nervous in the first half and was trying to over-complicate things. He was better in the second half. For a first showing, chucked in the deep end, I thought all 4 (I include Harding as they were just as much of a stranger to him) played very well. As you say, the midfield was letting Millwall through onto them far too often which only goes to strengthen the excellence of their display. Such a shame that one error cost us. Of the 3 new boys, Fonte was the real stand out though. I was also quite impressed by our other new player - chap by the name of Holmes! I hope he gets a run in the team to build his sharpness and match fitness. Oh well, now I've started I may as well give my overall assessment - it's much quieter on this thread without the vitriol and tit-for-tat point-scoring being spewed forth on the main thread. The 4 horsemen of the Apocalypse seem to have gone to bed as well. We did what we have done so many times this season, played well in spurts and then have a game of 'hoof to Lambert' or headers keepy-uppy. Antonio is dynamite - he is so strong! Connolly was missed and I don't think we will see him in any more than small cameos because of his fitness problems. Anyway, as ever Keep the Faith COYS The Ronmobile takes to the tarmac for MKDons on Wednesday.

ericofarabia Posted 17 January, 2010 Share Posted 17 January, 2010 Based on (from radio commentary) the amount of pressure they were under throughout the match they must have done pretty well to have lasted 92 and a half minutes  Sounded like Semi had a few good runs on the overlap, should get more chances to do so at home. It's a shame the other 2 won't get much chance to score goals from deadball situations (except corners) as rickie will score with anything inside 40 yards A bit harsh to try and judge them on one game, a very difficult game to boot, but I'm sure they will prove to be good additions to the team/squad. Huffton Posted 17 January, 2010 Share Posted 17 January, 2010 Considering that was the first time they had played together I tought they did OK, Fonte the best. Harding I thought struggled a bit at times, although did make a few good last ditch tackles. Just seen the goals again on the iplayer, Otsembor should have just done the millwall lad for their goal, he wasn't even on a yellow and he was going away from goal at the time. Hindsight and all that. Give them another couple of weeks to build up an understanding and we will have a very strong back line.

Irrespective of how they played yesterday, as I wasn't there, I'm looking forward to seeing the newbies in action. Sadly the next game I'm attending is on Saturday in the FA Cup,and if all three are cup tied, I'll be seeing Perry and Thomas again. (Or Jaidi if fit). I'm quite suprised Pardew opted to play both centre backs, and leave out Perry, as it's him we'll be relying on next Saturday. Anyway, looking forward to it. Even if you look past hios mistake that cost us the win, he didn't really do much to form an opinion either way.
Andy_Porter Posted 17 January, 2010 Share Posted 17 January, 2010 i actually thought the player that was exposed most today was harding Agreed, Pardew just setup the team wrong. Lallana should have played wide left, Wiago on the right, James in the middle and Holmes back on the bench, easy to say in hindsight I suppose. suspect everyone Posted 17 January, 2010 Share Posted 17 January, 2010 Fonte was class and lead the backline well. Seaborne didnt appear any better than what we already have at the club. However he's young and may get better with time. Ostemebor was very average and I'm pretty sure was at fault for their goal. He got skinned a couple of times and only Millwall's poor finishing meant they didnt score those occasions. He also seemed hesistant to go forward at times. Willing to give them time to bed in obviously. However when Lambert, Connolly, Jaidi and now Fonte came into the side you could immediately see they were a class above what we already have. On first impressions Seaborne and Ostemebor don't have that quality I'm afraid.
