SamKimish Posted 18 June, 2010 Share Posted 18 June, 2010 The English transfer llist has been announced, if you could have your pick for Saints, who would you have? http://www.givemefootball.com/pfa-transfer-list? Ideally, I wouldn't mind Ballack, Joe Cole, Bouma, Gallas etc.

SuperMikey Posted 18 June, 2010 Share Posted 18 June, 2010 George Boateng - Midfield general, just what we need. Febian Brandy - Deadly quick forward who has played at L1 level before with Peterborough. Ben Burgess - Powerful target man with a scorching long shot Liam Chilvers - Dominant centre back, rarely loses a header. Amdy Faye - Brick sh!thouse centre mid. Marlon Harewood - Powerful and pacy striker, also has links to Pardew as he signed him for West Ham. Sam Hewson - Promising central midfielder from Man Utd, surprised he's been released. Gavin McCann - Tough tackling centre mid, very experienced and capped for England. Benjani - Would be difficult to attract him to a L1 club, but he would star at this level. Erik Nevland - Again, would be difficult to attract but he's very good in the air and is a Norway international. Lloyd Sam - YES! YES! YES! Pacy winger with a killer cross, THIS IS THE PLAYER WE SHOULD SIGN!

Dellman Posted 19 June, 2010 Share Posted 19 June, 2010 The good thing about this summer compared with all the recent ones is that we don't depend on freebies and we don't want many new faces, we want to get rid if the last of the old ones. I would like a midfield general and that's about all, oh a RB of course.

Nidger Posted 19 June, 2010 Share Posted 19 June, 2010 Realistic targets from the list IMO are: George Boetang - A candidate for that midfield general role we need to fill Febian Brandy - Ex Man Utd striker that has a lot of pace but is only 5ft 7in tall. Still only 21 though and has played for Swansea City, Hereford United and Gillingham at League 1 level in the past! Ben Burgess - A possible alternative to Lambert at 6ft 4in tall and still only 28. Also has a scorching long shot according to Super Mikey Danny Butterfield - Still only 30 and a possible solution to that big hole we have at right back Lee Carsley - Another candidate for the midfield general role but a bit on the old side at 36 Simon Derry - Yet another candidate for the midfield general role Amdy Faye - A solid central midfielder that is tall, athletic and quick. The only drawback is that he is an ex skate! Steve Finnan - A quality right back even though he is now 34! Another ex skate! Sam Hewson - A promising young central midfielder released by Man Utd. Could be interesting! Clint Hill - Can play at centre back or left back. 6ft 1in tall and still only 31 James McEveley - Ex Blackburn left back who was highly rated by them at 1 point. Surprised that Derby have released him! Still only 25 and 6ft 1in tall Gary McSheffrey - Didn't really impress for Leeds last season ut he was playing out of position on the wing. Has played for clubs like Birmingham in the past so he must have something to offer. Should play upfront though IMO Roy O'Donovan - A fine goal scoring record for Hartlepool United last season (9 goals in 15 games) at League 1 level! Still only 24, only drawback is his height at 5ft 7in tall! David Raven - Ex Liverpool right back who can also play at centre back. 6ft tall and still only 25. Lloyd Sam - A quick skillful winger that always looks a threat to the opposition's defense. He would also provide much needed competition for Lallana and Puncheon! Still only 25 too! Sam Sodje - A strong centre back with League 1 experience and some pace. Still only 31 and 6ft tall are both positives too! Ricardo Vaz Te - A quick tall (6ft 3in) centre forward but a bit unpredictable! Still only 23 too!

With our RM problem at the moment, we could do a lot, lot worse than signing him on a free. Burgess was quite a vital part of the Blackpool team that went up to the Premiership this year, and he's been a star player at L1 level in the past. Brandy would be a gamble as he's been a bit hit-and-miss, but there's no doubting he's very quick and scares defenders, the kind of player that any squad needs. Puncheon and Lallana can play there, i wouldn't call it a problem area, unlike right back. As for Brandy, Pace, hit and miss, sounds very much like Pap Waigo then? never seen him play or heard of him to be honest, but unpredicatabiltiy and pace are two big things to have in your locker. Mikey, I don't agree that Charlton were a poor team last year. I saw the game at SM and it was a close 1-0 victory for us. I believe the game at the Valley was a 1-1- draw as well so they can't be that bad. They also finished in the playoffs and only got beaten by Swindon on penalties! Lloyd Sam is a good player, and I agree that he would be a good signing on a free transfer from one of our promotion rivals for next season. However, Charlton do have some other good players like Bailey (potentially joining Middlesbrough for £1.5m and a possible transfer target for us!), Sam Sodje (also available on a free transfer), Thierry Racon, Kyle Reid and not forgetting Jonjo Shelvey who is joining Liverpool! Most Charlton fans on their forum don't rate him, also Sheffield Wednesday fans don't rate him either from his loan spell there - was poor in both games against Saints last season and any televised live game after Xmas that I saw. Agreed we could do worse but I'd much rather pay money and get Antonio who has more potential.

At the moment, Lallana is really our only recognised right midfielder, as Puncheon plays on the left. Lallana's a converted RM as well, so we need somebody who plays there naturally imo. But yes, RB is also a big problem. Brandy is not as good as Papa Waigo at the moment imo, but I think he can improve in the future. He's a similar kind of player to Waigo I suppose, just more of a striker than a wide man.

I saw the Charlton game at SMS too, and both sides were pretty poor that day tbf. Charlton started well but slipped away after Christmas and never looked the same team. A lucky resurgence in form got them back into the play-offs but after losing players like Sodje, Bailey, Shelvey and potentially Racon and not having any money to spend on new players, they will be a shadow of the side they were this year by next season. I agree with your point in relation to the fact that Charlton will be a weaker side next year, but if you lose 5 of you top players then you are gonna be a weaker team! Maybe Frazer Richardson (who I believe was named as the right back in the League 1 team of the year for last season!) should be another Charlton player that we could add to our squad! Yes, that's true, but would you not agree that it would be better to have recognised right wingers in our team rather than converted midfielders? Puncheon is left footed too, so he's not as effective on the right side.

He also helped to set up a few goals cutting in from the right too! A lot of teams play with wingers playing on a side that is not natural to them (i.e. England on the left hand side). Another winger (or 2) would be useful though!
