I think most people assumed we would, as Pardew was quoted many times as saying he'd sign a pacy wide man. No one saw what was coming next.

 

So i can only hope we have some loans lined up for next week.

Maybe this was why Pardew was sacked. Cortese reads the forum, sees that alpine knew about the squad's shortcomings and then fires AP for not realising something even a simple forum member can see.

Alpine was vocal about the fact that we hadn't signed these players by the end of June. Pretty much everyone agreed that the squad was short of two or three players; CM, RM and CF. These players were, quite rightly, expected to be in place by the start of the season at best, or the end of the transfer window at worst. Dean Wilkins has already stated that under AP they wanted to bring players in but "it just didn't happen". Why that is, whether it is a failing by Cortese or Pardew, no-one will know. But don't go trying to re-paint history, have another read of Alpine's transfer threads from the summer and you'll see that the bone of contention was when the signings were made by, not that they were necessary in the first place.

However, when the Lads came back from the summer training camp, and there was a no show, I kind of knew that our wildcards wouldn't be coming back. The thing was... to replace them. Well, who to replace them with..? We knew they worked well for Saints, so why on earth bother to look for replacements, when they were available at the right price. Not having them could cost Saints more than paying over the odds to get them back.
