The Cat Posted 11 February, 2011 Share Posted 11 February, 2011 This is without doubt one of the best footballer interviews I've ever read. Good to see Matty gets a mention, and an "open-mouthed, eyes gleaming" mention too. Must mean a lot when it's from one of the best players ever. The quotes about the youth set-up at Barcelona are very enlightening. I hope that our Academy are trying the same, or similar with our youngsters. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/feb/11/xavi-barcelona-spain-interview

Saint_Jonny Posted 11 February, 2011 Share Posted 11 February, 2011 Fantastic interview, and its very, very rare that I can say that about a footballer, usually they are boring and full of cliché, but that was a damn good read. Can't believe how knowledgeable he is about football in general.
toofarnorth Posted 11 February, 2011 Share Posted 11 February, 2011 Great to see a really enthusiastic footballer rather than the David James, football stopped being fun when I started getting paid attitude. I like the fact that at Saints we try and play good football and I understand that sometimes we'll lose games we should win but I want to be entertained, more often than not. If that means losing away at Tranmere occasionally well so be it.

Every time I've heard him speak he sounds like someone pretending to be intelligent, but not having the vocabulary to do so...

The Cat Posted 11 February, 2011 Author Share Posted 11 February, 2011 David James' articles are usually very well thought out, like the one above he gives a different perspective on the game than a lot of footballers seem capable of. I love the fact Xavi seems to mention Matty a lot. Makes me proud to be a Saints fan, especially when every other player he talks about plays for a big team. Interesting that he views Scholes as the best midfielder of the past 15 years or so, makes Eriksson look even more incompetent for consistently sticking him on the left wing and hastening him towards the end of his international career. Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 11 February, 2011 Share Posted 11 February, 2011 Xavi is the most intelligent footballer I've seen. I like however that his approach can be summed up as ****, there's the defender, pass it over there. Best team midfielder of recent times. On a much lower level of course, he's the link schneiderlin should be looking to become in our team. If we do have money, say we get to the top flight in 2 years or so, can we please sign a veteran Xavi?! Come to the home of MLT! One of his heroes, he may be too old for barca, one last crack at England, it's got a 1% chance. Until Pompey offer him 800k a week. I feel that Schneiderlin is a different type of player to Xavi, more like Xabi Alonso, sits in front of the back four with time to pick a forward pass. A deep creative player. The player who I see most like Xavi is either Cesc or Henri Lansbury. Short, hard passes to players, movement off the man etc.

sammysaint Posted 11 February, 2011 Share Posted 11 February, 2011 Hes always been my fav barca player i went to camp nou and i was going to get him on my barca shirt in 2003/4 before his hype but getting Ronaldinho was the same price so i opted for him get my moneys worth. Saints are trying the same thing with the youth 11 you can see that with the development of the training ground and keeping chamberlin and lallana. Whats scary is cesc was not good enough for there squad 6/7 years ago and the players that were better then him at YTS are now in the 1st team

Toadhall Saint Posted 11 February, 2011 Share Posted 11 February, 2011 Guardiola himself was superb and often had that same control of a game, but probably not reaching the same heights. But then, he didn't quite have the same team around him. You can buy what Barca have. Having 3 or 4 teams playing the same way and 5 or 6 players who've played together for years and years, many since being kids, just takes them to another level. The Xavi/Busquets/Iniesta midfield trio is unstoppable IMO, then the small smatter of Pedro/Villa/Messi up front. They're a great team it's hard to dislike because of the way they play. Hoping they win the Champs League this year. I suppose we all like an upset, but I'd prefer to see a truly great deserving team win it. Too often it's gone to tactical teams or those clogging their way through like Liverpool a few years ago. Although when they beat Arsenal we can enjoy the media saying it's a dark day for english football and we're lightyears behind and need to start again again again at grass roots level. In reality, Arsenal are probably a top 10 side in world football and would give most teams a game, but this is a Barca side that beat Real 5-0. In ability they're well beyond Real, Inter, Man Utd, Bayern, anyone. Really looking forward to watching Barca and Arsenal TBH - and thats from someone that doesn't watch a Prem game from week to week. Barca should win but I'm just hoping for the game of footie they could both produce.

CB Fry Posted 11 February, 2011 Share Posted 11 February, 2011 Meh. This Le Tissier chap is nothing more than an ex employee of a local company. Nothing more and definitely not worth discussing here. Xavi needs to know the real Saints legend is our current chairman, as the real passionate Saints fans know.

Wenger pulled out all the stops to get him even at that tender young age. If he had of stayed at Barca, theres no doubt in my mind he would have been in the first 11 now.
