JonnyLove Posted 30 May, 2011 Share Posted 30 May, 2011 Not really. 22 of those players were regulars for the team the rest were either out on loan or are "youth" (Or injured for the season lee homes). So thats 2 players for each position. I'd say that was about right if not a little short.
NickG Posted 30 May, 2011 Share Posted 30 May, 2011 often hear managers saying want 22-25 players of first team quality. Accept few youngsters should be below that as possible odd appearance or sub / cup game etc, but that list is 36 strong, and that's before we add Owen, BT, CMS, Howard, Nugent, Cork, Danns, Bridge and Elliott! This. In fact we did really well with a basic squad of 21/22 players. Given 18 are on duty at each match due to the ridiculous 7 subs rule, that means only 2 or 3 were not involved in any individual matchday. Given a couple of injuries, the 18 man squad basically picked itself. Occassional appearances on the bench by a youth player (Doble for instance) probably just highlighted that in fact our squad size was just about on the button, if not a little short at times. We probably need to put a few of the Youth out on loan next season, and dispense with Puncheon, Forecast and a couple of others (Joseph Mills who has been on loan, either he should be in squad or let go), and bring in about 3 new players and we will have a good sized quality squad again for an NPC campaign. david in sweden Posted 30 May, 2011 Share Posted 30 May, 2011 according to wikipedia: http://bit.ly/lB5QFp take it with a pinch of salt though. There are 36 names ..if I'm right there are 11 who have NEVER played first team football, and another 4 out of contract NEXT year Bearing in mind we need 22 for a well-balanced squad, so where's the problem?. Personally... I think we need another 3-4 to make up for those who will walk next May, and to replace those who aren't Prem.standard - whether we go up or not next season. Matthew Le God Posted 30 May, 2011 Share Posted 30 May, 2011 according to wikipedia: http://bit.ly/lB5QFp take it with a pinch of salt though. Take what with a bit of salt? This isn't actually news, or an accurate list. They are all definitely Saints players. It actually isn't a full list, Saints actually have around 60 currently contracted players on professional deals (bar a few). Plus they had 125 players registered at the academy at the start of 2010/11.

I believe there are many more than 4 who are out of contract next year: Kelvin Davis Dan Harding Rickie Lambert Lee Barnard Danny Butterfield Dean Hammond Radhi Jaidi Aaron Martin Joseph Mills Lee Holmes David Connolly Bartosz Bialkowski Ryan Doble Under 21s Harlee Dean Jack Saville Lloyd Isgrove Sam Hoskins Aarran Racine Andy Robinson

Lighthouse Posted 31 May, 2011 Share Posted 31 May, 2011 And now look at the Portsmouth FC Wikipedia current squad..... and laugh your tits off!!!!! It's brilliant. 14 players, including 2 youth players, 2 geriatrics and 2 more who are definitely leaving. Not to mention Ben Haim, who I'm fairly sure can't play for them because they can't afford his appearance bonus. Still, I'm sure the other 7 players are perfectly capable. shurlock Posted 31 May, 2011 Share Posted 31 May, 2011 On the Huddersfield forum, they've worked out the first team used 38 players last season (36 if you discount the two youngsters who made subs bench one time each) - i doubt we come anything close to that.
