kwsaint Posted 7 June, 2011 Share Posted 7 June, 2011 Getting bored with no football. Bit of a random question. I seem to remember that Saints had a Channon goal disallowed in the away leg. This was at a time when Anderlecht were allegedly bribing refs. Was this another case of a dodgy ref, or was it valid? Was anyone actually at the game. The home leg was fantastic until Jim Steele stepped over the ball.
Give it to Ron Posted 7 June, 2011 Share Posted 7 June, 2011 I went...brilliant trip, mass game of footie at Dover. The ferry staff were doing a crate for a fiver on board so most were wrecked. The police went onto the coaches to stop anyone that was too ****ed and they warned us we woudnt be allowed onwards- we had one lad propped up with his one year passport card in hand pretending to be asleep. In the ground the tannoy music played Manhattan Transfer Chanson D'Amour ratattata over and over... The stadium was ****e and the steps were crumbling under your feet as you jumped up and down. Oh and we were robbed with that bent lino!! Back to Ostend after the game and packed out the bars - great trip.
Saint Billy Posted 7 June, 2011 Share Posted 7 June, 2011 Didn't go to away leg but went to home game. If I remember correctly it was p*ssing it down all night. Anderlecht were a very tall side and pretty useful. I remember cringing whenever Jim Steele got the ball and eventually he made a howler. Great night though and great atmosphere. I don't recall any ref gaffs that evening, mind you I was a little worse for wear due to a thermos flask which was not full of coffee.

I remeber being a complete mess by the time our bus got to the game. think we stopped in Gent (sp) Came out the bar at some obscure time as some sewage truck was emptying a tank - something like 20 of us chundered in unison at the smell. Remember the krap stadium & terracing stuck up by the corner flag Remember being searched for booze as we got on the bus & someone talking to the driver which ended up with us stopping at an off licence Think we played cards all the way across on the ferry. No idea what happened on the way back think I remember opening an eye & seeing Kent then sleeping again and finding it was time to drive back from the Dell Car Park or somewhere nearby. Or did the Bus go back to Salisbury? Ouch

oldsarum Posted 7 June, 2011 Share Posted 7 June, 2011 I went to both games Trip to Anderlecht was great, I was on one of a couple of coaches that started at Salisbury and picked up others in Southampton then off to Dover for night crossing to Ostend. We were made to stop at Gent for hours on way to game, everyone got wrecked Great game, with over 2000 Saints fans there and Channon's goal should never have been disallowed. 2nd leg was great night at the Dell we had them on the run and at 2-0 up on the night (2-2 on aggregate) we looked like we might win tie, until Jim Steele's mistake gave them a goal. Still was a good run in competition, getting to Quarter Finals. I went to Marseilles in first round too , but that's another story
chocco boxo Posted 7 June, 2011 Share Posted 7 June, 2011 Probably my first at feeling soooooooooo down about a football result. Jim Steele would never had stepped over that ball if it was a beer!
BlagdonSaint Posted 8 June, 2011 Share Posted 8 June, 2011 Probably my first at feeling soooooooooo down about a football result. Jim Steele would never had stepped over that ball if it was a beer! I'll get slated to f**k now as I was a 14 year old nipper standing behind the goal that night in the Archers end watching that ball roll slowly in & could have changed a bit of our history. I had enough time & seriously contemplated jumping over the low wall, running into our area & kicking the ball clear - but shat myself because it suddenly dawned on me that I might get arrested / banned for life from the Dell. Always wondered what might have been if I had jumped onto that cinder track & now wish I had done it - at least big Jim would have bought me a pint ! THINWHITEDUKE Posted 8 June, 2011 Share Posted 8 June, 2011 "The stadium was ****e and the steps were crumbling under your feet as you jumped up and down." As I found out, got crushed against the fence, decided to leap over the fence and landed on the other side and the step crumbled, I broke my ankle and spent the next 36 hours totally afraid to take my boot off, got back to Southampton and straight up the General for my ankle to be plastered.Won't forget that trip in a hurry! On our coach we managed to get one of our not so wealthy mates to Anderlecht and back without either a passport or a ticket for the game, it was funny at times especially when our coach got boarded by the law to search for booze and he was scrambling on his belly like a snake under the seats, we were all s******ing like schoolkids on an outing, we got him in to the ground by giving him a leg up a tree that overlooked the open stand and he actually jumped from the tree to the outer wall some 10ft away and scrambled over. The previous posters are right about the Manhattan Transfer song, the tannoy played it once then we sang it for what seemed like hours! I particularly remember LMc walking in front of the fence applauding us and the cops rapping the knuckles of the saints fans that were hanging/climbing said fence. Happy days!! Think they've been a few mentions of various bits and pieces from different trips on here before, but would be great to hear full accounts from all our European games over the years, Hamburg, Marseille, Limerick etc........... Prince Jazzbo Posted 8 June, 2011 Share Posted 8 June, 2011 I got run over by a moped as a result of looking the wrong way when crossing the road there. I had a graze in the shape of a tyre tread on the side of my calf.
Isabel Healey Posted 8 June, 2011 Share Posted 8 June, 2011 I went to both games also. Much the same as you've said. Too much booze, crap ground, and a perfectly good Channon header disallowed, for no obvious reason / Lasting memories--the police escort into Brussels, from miles outside, and spending most of the time inside, trying to chat up some girl in French, only for her to turm round eventually, and tell me angrily, that she was Flemish. I don't think she was impressed either way !ratatatatat. Oh yeah remember that. Waxer Posted 8 June, 2011 Share Posted 8 June, 2011 Remember going to the home leg, I was 12, stood at the Milton End with my dad. Vaguely remember it being a pretty good game but the wrong outcome for saints.

Remember a lad from Harefield getting a cabin on a lower deck to get some sleep, he was so pi**ed he woke up looked out the porthole and thought the ferry was sinking. I ended up on a different coach at Ostend because mine had already gone on board, 4 of us were late back due to a visit to a really sleazy club. As ron said we were robbed by some really poor decisions Remember getting back in Southampton at about 9.30am ready for opening time at 10am

Fitzhugh Fella Posted 8 June, 2011 Share Posted 8 June, 2011 After the game the gun totting cops came onto the pitch to face the 2000 Saints fans expecting trouble.....but as soon as the tannoy started playing "Chanson D'Amour" the whole Saints contingent joined in to leave the Belgium police looking really stupid. It was a helluva trip!
Pat from Poole Posted 8 June, 2011 Share Posted 8 June, 2011 I'm sure I read in a paper somewhere that the ex-GMTV presenter Fiona Phillips was at the away leg in Belgium, as some kind of rebellious deed to annoy her parents. Though she now appears to be a saddo Chelsea plastic. I don't think i am entirely making this up, random though it sounds. Can anybody confirm I am not mad? krissyboy31 Posted 9 June, 2011 Share Posted 9 June, 2011 Wasn't that Vitoria Guimares? It certainly pi%%ed down all day in Marseille. We arrived at dawn and being only 13 at the time, couldn't take shelter in the pub. Think I overdosed on coffee that day.
suewhistle Posted 9 June, 2011 Share Posted 9 June, 2011 I went to Anderlecht the posh way as Dad got me a priv BEA ticket as he worked for them and I made a weekend of it. Being posh like, I wandered round Brussels and went to an art gallery or museum, but yes, I may have had a beer or two. But not as much a some of you lot!! Chanson d'Amour still sticks in my brain, the stadium was decrepit and I remember (correctly?) Osgood losing the ball on the half way line for them to score. One of the Resenbrincks was playing for them - oh gawd, I don't know, perhaps I did have a few beers.

OLDER BUT WISER Posted 10 June, 2011 Share Posted 10 June, 2011 Had a great time on the away trip, I found a £10 note (probably the equivalent of £100 today ) so we went and paid for a cabin and 3 bottles of scotch and a crate of beer, sorry if it was one of our fans who lost it and actually surprised we got to the ground. I was the responsible adult for a couple of 15 year olds and I hope their parents do not read this. I know it sound very corny but those were the days. THINWHITEDUKE Posted 10 June, 2011 Share Posted 10 June, 2011 I remember giving one of thr Zeebrugge ferry crew members 60p and a worn out silk saints scarf for a bottle of smirnoff which we consumed neat, does anyone remember, I think it was Nick Mason and Roger Waters from Pink Floyd in the main bar on board the ferry? My Floyd loving mate just yelled out at the top of his voice "**** me it's Pink Floyd!" Fair play they came over for a chat and a drink (Smirnoff) and shot off when the weather got really rough and lads were puking as the ferry rolled!! It was carnage! Our coach rolled in to Brussels at 8am and were informed by the police that no Saints fans were allowed in to the town until 5pm, we all gathered our gear together and scattered to the 4 corners of Brussels with 2 cops in hot pursuit (no chance) and a good day on the Belgian Stella was had by all.
