Davis, Makin, Baird, Cranie,Claus, Skacel, Viafara, Pele, Guthrie Surman, Best, Saganowski,Rasiak Kenwyne,Idiakez Belmadi ,Wright-Phillips.

How does that side, that pushed for promotion, compare with what we have at our disposal this coming season.

This of course is dependant on wether we are going for promotion, which i sincerely hope,or we are going to 'consolodate'.

An of course we had the liability of Burley.

Which i don't think anyone, just yet, can Label Adkins.;)

Are we judging those names on their ability then or now? Some have grown an awful lot since those days... Best, Baird and Jones especially.

We are in a much better place now... We are a team.

Presumably compared to their ability then. For me I'd say only Baird, Surman and Jones stand out from the previous lot.

Thanks for putting up this post. Present team looks stronger at the back, no worse in mid-field and slightly weaker up front. Team spirit is certainly better - remember Best's hissy fit and Skacel going missing regularly. Perhaps we are underestimating our possibilities.

I'd have...

Davis (2006/07 version)

Baird

Fonte

Lundekvam

Bale

Lallana

Surman

Cork

Chamberlain

Lambert

Jones

Now that would be an awesome team! :D

Six from 2006/07 and five from 2011/12 (although Davis does crossover, so you could say 5.5 each).

That Burley team had one f**k of a front line (even though it was badly used). But the defence and midfield was suspect.

Overall, I'd say the current team is more balanced and there probably wont be much in it.

Also we can remove the massive Burley drag-factor from the current lot's shoulders.

claus was passed his best without strong CB.

think all the midfield would have struggled to get into todays side.

we had good options up front.

If it was the Saganowski on loan then him and Jones up front all day long, if not then Him and Lambert]

Guthrie or VIafara in midfield with Cork, AOC & Lallana

Defence, Baird, Fonte, Lundekvam, Bale - even though as Nick G says, Claus was past his best by then. Kid of shows we could probably do with another centre back

With no additions we're a lot better. There was no team that year. Lots of quality, but woeful management, underachieving and endless changes, people out of position and out of favour.

Now we have a team and a proper manager. Difference is we don't have that expectation, it's not all or nothing. 6th would be great, rather than the utter bare minimum last time when they'd gambled the club.

I do agree with that.

We had lots of individual talent, but it was poorly managed collectivley. Looking back now, a team with the likes of Skacel, Bale, Jones, Baird.....should have easily been challenging for an automatic spot, no sneaking into the playoffs.

I'd take Baird Bale and Jones from that team, but we've now got players like Lallana and Chambo who are on a different level than the likes of Dyer and Viafara etc.

Really? I would argue that he has improved since then.

tbh it is a very hard call either way and can't really remember too much of him back then.

However at that point in 2006 he had just been Premier League (albeit not a great season for Sunderland, but he was well worked! :D) and had lots of Championship games before that winning player of the season at Ipswich, at the moment he has had two years of sitting behind one of the best defences in the 3rd tier.
